INTRODUCTION TO THE
SOCIETY
Mannar District is located in northwestern SriLanka.
Geographically the bulk of Mannar is on themainland within the arid and dry zone.
The primary economic activities in Mannar arecrop cultivation (mainly paddy), fisheries andanimal husbandry.
Mannar district's population was 103,688 in 2007.
The population of the district is mostly SriLankan Tamil.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Mannar District is located in northwestern SriLanka. It is one of five administrative districts ofthe Northern Province.
Peoples, who live at Mannar, face manyproblems to developing the infrastructure facilitiesfor their basic needed. Thats why, we consideringor identifying some infrastructure categories to
motivate the peoples welfare in the society.

TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES
Existing A standard roads are not in goodcondition.
Most of the access roads are foot paths.
Main entrance bridge is under construction.
Due to flood the roads become damage, this makesome problems during rainy periods.

Speedup thereconstruction of the MannarBridge and its causeway.
Constructing access roads.
Increase the embankmentfor road construction.

DRINKING WATER
Mannar is located in the driest region of thecountry.
Many areas in the district suffer shortages ofpotable water.
In some areas they are getting pure water usingdeep tube wells and through bowsers to otherareas.
And also in some places the seawater penetrate into
the ground.

In mannar, coastal sand is used for most of theconstructions.
Some human activities destroy psychedelic typeplants.
Due to eroding the area of the beach reduced andmake some effects in tourism.

Fishing is a major contribution to the localeconomy of Mannar District.
Dont have enough technical knowledge.
Infiltration of Indian fishermen.
Dont have good fishing ports.

Though 90 of 111schools are functioning,
many of the original structures are damaged or
destroyed.
No lab, IT facilities in school
Child workers are increasing
38% of teaching appointments are vacant.

IRRIGATION
Agriculture is the mainstay of the population of theNorth and east.
Ease of irrigation of paddy land plays a crucial role
in its cultivation.
Tank-irrigated agriculture declined sharply due tosecurity problems, displacement, loss of
agricultural equipment and machinery, and poormaintenance of tanks and water distributionsystems.
