There are plenty of good reasons to virtualise your ICT environment –everything from better scalability and reliability through to lower total cost of ownership.

But a successful virtualisation project is often characterised as much by what you cannot virtualise as what you can.

The current approach to virtualisation is fundamentally flawed. Once all of the simple elements are virtualised (server, storage, etc.), organisations take one of two routes when it comes to the elements that are more difficult – the physical assets. They either make an assumption based on capacity about how they will work in the new virtualised environment. Or they put them to one side, label them as ‘too difficult’ and carry on with the rest of the project. Neither route is effective.

A better approach would be to recognise that you simply cannot virtualise everything. However, you can apply the principles of virtualisation to manage your non-virtual assets more efficiently. By consolidating your physical elements while virtualising everything else, you can reduce your overall storage capacity and costs. As with every project of this kind there are key factors to consider…

Key considerations

3

Where are you on your virtualisation journey?Surely virtualisation should be considered as a journey rather than a project or end point destination? Therefore should we not consider applying virtualisation principles such as service encapsulation, portability and scalability to services that on the surface don’t appear to lend themselves to virtualisation? Should we instead consider virtualisation as being both above and below the server infrastructure and indeed to applications themselves? If there is an end point for virtualisation, perhaps it should apply to every service running, albeit using different techniques.

What is your current approach for the bits that you can’t (or shouldn’t) virtualise?Experience has shown Fujitsu that very often when our customers embark on a virtualisation ‘project’ they discover a proportion (sometimes a large proportion) of services/applications are not suitable to virtualise. These services can often be highly important to the customer (e.g. CRM databases) and so it is dangerous simply to ignore them and put them into the ‘too hard’ box. Very often the infrastructure that is supporting these services is every bit as aged as the platform supporting the virtualisation targets.

Fujitsu would argue that the approach should be to leverage the new infrastructure that supports virtualisation, by creating a pooled and shared IT services environment for both physical and virtual needs. This results in having one environment to manage, and in doing so realises the benefits of scalability, reliability and performance.

How are your projects normally funded – e.g. Project based, ROI expectations, in year or total solution life cycle? The virtualisation journey should be considered a core part of any IT strategy, as the benefits of this journey are too big in our opinion, to be ignored. Fujitsu’s strong advice is to try and avoid implementing a strategy based on project budgets as this leads to difficult to manage and costly silos of infrastructure.

What is your approach to capacity planning?Capacity planning is probably the most important aspect of a business’s virtualisation journey. The objective of this exercise is to capture as much data over the longest period of time. If we shorten the time period then there is a risk that we don’t understand the application behaviour in full, and the result could be unforeseen peaks in usage that can affect the whole virtualised environment. Fujitsu’s advice is that this exercise captures information over a full reporting cycle to ensure any peaks are fully understood.

Virtualisation and consolidation only really pay back if you continue on the journey and consider the whole environment including server, network and storage at the outset – Please don’t stop at the server and hypervisor level – this is not a virtualisation journey nor destination end point.

vShapeEnterprise-class ICT virtualisation is now possible in days rather than weeks thanks to Fujitsu vShape. State-of-the-art technology from world-leading companies is already built in so you get the infrastructure you need without the hassle of designing, integrating and testing it yourself. Instead of going it alone, you can rely on vShape for FUJITSU PRIMERGY servers, NetApp FAS storage, Brocade ICX networking and VMware vSphere software – all straight out-of-the-box.

FUJITSU PRIMEQUESTSpecifically suited to an always-on, data-rich ICT environment, our PRIMEQUEST servers deliver high availability to virtual computing environments. Leveraging the benefits of industry standard platforms, such as x86 servers and OpenSource. PRIMEQUEST also gives you the added confidence that applications will deliver a continuous service.

FUJITSU Cluster-in-a-boxOur entry-level, low cost virtualisation platform allows for consolidation of a number of physical systems while providing increased availability. No hidden costs means it is perfect when budgets are tight and IT expertise may be limited.

Despite organisations sharing many of the same challenges, Fujitsu understands that there can be no one-size-fits-all approach to virtualisation.

That is why we advocate virtualising and consolidating your ICT infrastructure based on your specific requirements. Rather than virtualising what you can and then leaving physical assets to run on out-dated systems that require greater ongoing support, you get the advantages of common management tools between the two environments. What is more, you benefit from Fujitsu’s consultative approach and our experience as one of the world’s leading providers of virtualisation services.

Infrastructure Matters. So, why Fujitsu for Virtualisation?

Hyper-efficient

The infrastructure we build is designed to reduce total cost of ownership for our customers – in some cases by as much as 60%.

Environmentally sound

We built a recycling centre over 30 years ago and have the lowest use of poisonous and hazardous substances of any vendor on the market.

Everyday dependability

We touch the lives of 99% of the UK population daily – from HMRC systems to DVLA licensing to financial transactions via The Post Office.
