1800 by Sir Frederick William Hershel Thought colors were associated with
heat Used 3 thermometers with blackened
bulbs (measure heat of different colors) Studied beyond red light. It was called “Calorific Rays”. Which is
now known as “Infrared Rays” in the late 19th Century.

Infrared (IR) light is electromagnetic radiation with a
wavelength longer than that of visible light, starting from the
nominal edge of visible red light at 0.7 micrometers, and
extending conventionally to 300 micrometers.
The Origination Of The WordThe Origination Of The Word
The name means below red, the Latin word
“infra” meaning "below". Red is the color of
the longest wavelengths of visible light.

Infrared light from the Sun only
accounts for 49% of the heating of the
Earth.
Objects at room temperature will emit
radiation.
