INFOWATCH AN IN -HOUSE MONTHLY COMMUNICATION VOL.5 N O.8, SEPTEMBER, 2019 CSIR-North East Institute of Science & Technology, Jorhat Connecting Science & Technology for a Brighter Tomorrow CSIR-NEIST signs MoU with KIIT- Technology Business Incubator, Bhubanes- war amidst the Innovation and Entrepre- neurship Training series A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between CSIR-NEIST and KIIT- Technology Business Incubator (KIIT-TBI) on 20 September 2019 to formulate & promote pro- grammes for bio-entrepreneurship development in NE region. The MoU was signed by Dr G Na- rahari Sastry, Director, CSIR-NEIST and Dr Mrutyunjay Suar, CEO, KIIT-TBI in presence of officials from both the organizations. CSIR- NEIST being the S&T Face for CSIR in North East Region has taken the responsibility to be- come the major hub for promoting & nurturing entrepreneurship in the region and under this perspective, a two-day Nuts and Bolts of Innova- tion & Entrepreneurship Training Series on "Building & Translating Innovative Ideas" was organized at CSIR-NEIST in association with BIRAC-KIIT TBI, Bhubaneswar during 19-20 September 2019. The training series was based on the “Brewing Bio-entrepreneurship in Jorhat” programme held in July 2019 which primarily focused on sensitizing about BIG programme of BIRAC and other related schemes supported by BIRAC. The two-day training series was aimed to mentor and provide a platform to impart nec- essary knowledge and skills to budding bio- entrepreneurs for transforming innovative ideas into successful and sustainable ventures. The programme also covered a pitching session wherein a few aspiring entrepreneurs from CSIR -NEIST who have submitted proposals for BIG grant will be pitching their ideas before the ex- perts. Various experts and eminent personalities from KIIT-TBI led by Dr Mrutyunjay Suar and other organizations such as Dr S Shriram, Senior VP, Jananom Pvt.Ltd., Bangalore; Dr Kaustabh Dhangalkar, Design Thinker; Dr Namrata Mishra, Head-Bio-innovation KIIT-TBI and Dr Rajeev Ai- yappa, Plataforma Ventures, Singapore deliber- ated on various important aspects of starting a business enterprise, bio-entrepreneurship, mar- keting, etc. The programme was attended by a large number of participants comprising of re- searchers, scientists, faculties and students from various educational and research institutes of Jorhat besides CSIR-NEIST. The programme was coordinated by Dr S P Saikia, Principal Sci- entist, CSIR-NEIST. It may be mentioned that the Institute has been organizing various pro- grammes in the recent past to mentor & em- power young entrepreneurs by helping them to acquire various skills and knowledge besides providing required infrastructure & platform which are all crucial for the development of en- trepreneurship ecosystem. CSIR-NEIST signs MoU with KIIT-Technology Business Incubator, Bhubanes-war amidst the Innovation and Entrepre-neurship Training series

Shri Nitin Jairam Gadkari, Hon’ble Union Minister of Road Transport and MSME, Govt. of India launches three products developed by CSIR-NEIST

Three product based technologies developed by CSIR-NEIST namely Oil Absorbing Mat, Flexible Leather Composite Material and CVCP Bio-fertilizer were launched by Shri Nitin Jairam Gadkari, Hon'ble Union Minister of Road Trans-port and MSME, Govt. of India on 28 September 2019 at the Inaugural function of the New initia-tives of Coir Board held at Vellore. It is to be mentioned that CSIR-NEIST has been working closely with Coir Board for development of vari-ous products under different projects catalyzed by the Coir Board.

CSIR-NEIST transferred various technologies for commercialization

CSIR-NEIST transferred its agro-technology package on improved variety of Patchouli (Jor Lab P-1) to Institute of Horticulture Tech-nology, Kamrup on 5 September 2019 for commercial cultivation and processing.

CSIR-NEIST transferred its agro-technology packages on improved variety of Citronella (Jor Lab C-5), Lemon grass (Jor Lab L-10) and Patchouli (Jor Lab P-1) to M/s Krishi Shakti Food & Beverages, Maharashtra on 9 September 2019 for commercial cultivation and processing.

CSIR-NEIST transferred its agro-technology packages on improved variety of Lemon grass (Jor Lab L-8) to Shri Arindam Reang, entrepreneur from Tripura on 16 September 2019 for commercial cultivation and process-ing.

CSIR-NEIST transferred its process technol-ogy for production of Natural Vanillin from renewable resource to M/s BioTrans Axom Pvt.Ltd., Guwahati on 20 September 2019 for commercial production.

Certificate of Excellence to CSIR-NEIST at 8th Bhopal Vigyan Mela 2019

CSIR-NEIST received Certificate of Excellence for securing First position in the 8th Bhopal Vi-gyan Mela 2019 jointly organised by Vigyan Bharti and CSIR-Advanced Materials and Proc-esses Research Institute at Bhopal during 13-16 September 2019. CSIR-NEIST showcased its various activities and technologies through post-ers and other exhibit materials at the event which was attended by large number of students, sci-entists, entrepreneurs and general public.

25th Dr J N Baruah Memorial Lecture held at CSIR-NEIST

The 25th Dr J N Baruah Memorial Lecture was held at CSIR-NEIST on 9 September 2019. The

event was jointly organized by Dr J N Baruah Memorial Trust; Assam Science Society Jorhat Branch and CSIR-NEIST. Dr J N Baruah Memo-rial Lecture is held annually in the honour and fond memory of Late Dr J N Baruah, Former Di-rector of CSIR-NEIST and an eminent scientist & educationist from Assam known for his signifi-cant contribution in science & its popularization in the state. Prof T G Sitharam, Director, IIT Gu-wahati graced the occasion as Chief Guest while Prof Peter Comba, University of Heidelberg, Ger-many graced the event as Guest of Honour. Prof Sitharam delivering the 25th Memorial Lecture on the topic, “Engineering Preparedness for Earthquake Disaster Mitigation” while Prof Comba spoke on “Chemistry and Progress of the Society”. CSIR-NEIST observed Hindi Week

CSIR-NEIST observed Hindi Week during 9-16 Sep-tember 2019. The week-long programme culminated

with the celebration of Hindi Day on 16 September in collaboration with Purvasha Hindi Academy, Jor-hat. Dr O P Gattani, Historian, Social Worker &Industrialist from Jorhat graced the Hindi Day programme as Chief Guest. On the occasion, Purvasha magazine was released by the Chief Guest in presence of Mrs Runu Barua, Presi-dent, Purvasha Hindi Academy, Er S C Kalita, Chief Scientist, CSIR-NEIST, and other mem-bers from CSIR-NEIST and Purvasha Hindi

Academy. As a part of the occasion, Certificates were distributed to the winners of various com-petitions held during the week such as Hindi Es-say writing, Hindi Quiz and Hindi Dictation. The week-long programme also comprised of Hindi workshop for selected staff of CSIR-NEIST. The programme was coordinated by Mr Ajay Kumar, Hindi Officer, CSIR-NEIST.

CSIR-NEIST organized training on Cultiva-tion and Processing of Aromatic Plants for farmers of Arunachal Pradesh

Under CSIR Aroma Mission, CSIR-NEIST organ-ized training on “Cultivation and Processing of Aromatic Plants” at Modai village, Changlang and Jairampur in Arunachal Pradesh on 2 & 3 September 2019 respectively. 64 farmers from Modai village and 74 farmers from Jairampur re-ceived the training imparted by CSIR-NEIST sci-entists on cultivation and processing of important aromatic plants such as Citronella, Lemon grass and Patchouli. The training programme at Jairampur was held in association with Krishi Vi-gyan Kendra, Changlang.

CSIR-NEIST conducts public demonstration of community based defluorida-tion/dearsenication plant

CSIR-NEIST conducted the first public demon-stration of rural small community defluoridation/dearsenication unit based on the technology de-veloped by the Institute on 23 September 2019 at PWD IB campus, Titabor, Assam. The pro-gramme was attended by members from gram panchayats, local primary school teachers and public health engineering dept. The event was organized by SaCIWATERS (South Asia Con-sortium for Interdisciplinary Water Resources Studies, Secunderabad) with the financial sup-port of European Union.

CSIR-NEIST organized series of Jigyasa Pro-gramme for school students Student-Scientist interactive programme JI-GYASA was also organized by CSIR-NEIST on 6, 13 & 30 September 2019 at its premise. Alto-gether 177 students and 26 teachers from Ken-driya Vidyalaya, ONGC-Jorhat; Kendriya Vidya-laya, AFS-Jorhat; Kendriya Vidyalaya, Dimapur; Kendriya Vidyalaya, Rangapahar Cantt, Di-mapur; New Look Academy, Jorhat and TRB Academy, Sivasagar visited CSIR-NEIST and attended the programme. The programme com-prised of scientific talks, fact-to-face interaction

with scientists and visit to various facilities of the labs.

First Annual General Meeting of NEPPFA held at CSIR-NEIST The 1st Annual General Meeting of North East Progressive Pig Farmers Association (NEPPFA) was held at CSIR-NEIST on 28 September 2019. The event was held at Dr J N Baruah Auditorium wherein Shri Atul Bora, Honorable Minister of Agriculture & Animal Husbandry, Govt. of Assam graced the occasion as Chief Guest. CSIR-NEIST undertakes various campus care initiatives

As a part of the Institute’s vision to prioritize fo-cus in the area of Environmental Care, CSIR-NEIST has taken up various campus care initia-tives at different levels. In this direction, the Insti-tute has completed major works for chemicals disposal & management planning, gas cylinder assessment & management, solvents assess-ment & management and equipment housing & planning. Other activities in progress are con-struction of new lakes as well as rejuvenation of the existing ones and creating a vibrant ecology park.
