    ABOUT THE PROJECT

    a. The host

    Club Excursionista Empordanès

    b. Presentation

Club Excursionista Empordanès  was founded in 1965, in Figueres. Since 1965 our goal

is keep the contact and share trekking and our surroundings with others.

The association has the main objective of recover dry-stone structures. This main

objective will lead workshops, tasks, and monitoring of how function the structures, terraces,

huts, walls and paved roads. From them, we learn to serve, how and where to recover this

    heritage.

    c. General context of the project

Requesens is a thoroughly known castle, in a good and a bad sense. Although it is a

spectacular castle that seems taken from a fairy tale, it is not really well cared. There are a lot

of damaged parts caused by the bad human usage. It will be the first year of a long term

project. The tasks of the first phase will be related with prevention actions, like cleaning or

signposting. The objectives of the project include: living together, sharing and respecting

different social and cultural realities; working under values based on integration, work team,

    sustainability, etc.

    d. Why we do it

We want to promote our amazing surroundings: sun, beaches, reserves and the

Mediterranean Sea give us a worthy place to share and, by the way, do some work for our

    environment.

    e. About local culture

    http://webspobles.ddgi.cat/sites/la_jonquera/default.aspx

    http://webspobles.ddgi.cat/sites/la_jonquera/Pages_LeftMenu/Coneix.aspx

Although Catalan culture is very homely, we like nature and take advantage of our sunny

days. We have our typical food and wines, which we will try for sure.

    f. Description of the camp

The general objectives of the EDUCATIONAL PROJECT are:

    1. Promote an educative, ludic, creative, and respectful space in which the participants are

    the protagonists;

    2. Encourage the acquisition of a system of values based on team work, coexistence and

    integration within the group;

    3. Promote sustainability and environmental education.

    The specific objectives are:

    1. Promote and strengthen the relationships within the group;

    2. Coexist with different social and cultural backgrounds and realities;

    3. Promote personal autonomy;

    4. Distinguish the advantages and disadvantages of our standard of living;

    5. Encourage waste minimization;

    6. Awareness of environmental issues in the area.

The general objectives of the TECHNICAL PROJECT are:

    1. Know the historical and cultural heritage of the area;

    2. Bring young people to nature;

    3. Understand the working systems of the area;

    4. Understand the social reality of the area.

    The specific objectives are:

    1. Get to know the social, historical, and cultural values of Requesens Castle surround and

    its border.

    2. Discover and give value to the historical context of Requesens Castle and its border.

    3. Get to know the touristic interest of the patrimony.

    4. Learn to use specific tools to restore the patrimony.

    5. Meet European models of patrimony management.

    6. Develop a respectful and sustainable attitude towards the patrimony and environment.

    7. Get to know the way of life in the area (livestock, agriculture and tourism).

    8. Identify natural species in the region.

    Functioning of the workcamp:

Each morning participants will be distributed in work groups, which will be accompanied by

one of the instructors and / or technicians to the work site and during the tasks. However, there will be always a group of three or four people accompanied by a monitor (group and

monitor in schedule rotation system), remain in the area of accommodation to clean (showers,

toilets, tents and exteriors) and to cook for the whole group.

Afternoons will be reserved to get to know different cultural realities, by the different

backgrounds of the same participants, and to promote and strengthen relationships within the

    group.

We'll encourage waste minimization, so we’ll be doing a selective collection, which it can help

    a lot!

    g. Accommodation (including address and phone)

Accommodation, supplies, and overnight sleeping will be held in a temporary camp,

installed in the gardens outside of the Requesens castle. These spaces are spacious and very

close to the Castle, and they are shade during all day.

We’ll install canadian tents where the participants can sleep comfortably.

The kitchen and dining room will be located within the grounds of the Castle, in order to

    prevent accidental fires.

There will be portable toilets, not very close to the camp site. Participants can take

shower and bath at the river, which can be find less than 30 minutes by walking.

Despite there's will be the main installation where we'll spend most of the days, there is

also a sports centre in Cantallops (30 minutes by car) with showers, space to sleep, and the

other basic facilities, with the confort we have at our houses. The organizers opted for this option because they consider that living in a temporary

camp is a very good experience!

The workcamp you are going to join is organised by an association who

is part of the international youth network Alliance. The Alliance of

    European Voluntary Service Organisations (www.alliance-network.eu)

promotes intercultural education, understanding and peace through

    voluntary service.

International Voluntary Service (IVS) strives for a fairer world, one that is

more sustainable, more healthy and with more balanced resources and social justice, that

will lead toward the development of people, communities, their happiness and solidarity.

The Alliance, also through the workcamps, isimplementing an international Sustainability

    Campaign (http://www.alliance-network.eu/our-

    campaigns/environmental-sustainability-

campaign/), aimed at spreading the principles of environmental sustainability and at raising

active citizenship committed with a fairer society. Being aware of the delicate relationship

between human beings and the surrounding environment, we invite all actors - volunteers,

camp leaders, organisers – to reflect upon their impact on local communities as well as their

role in our global society; we are all part of the same wonderful earth and have the

responsibility of safeguarding the natural resources it offers.

This workcamp will participate in the Energy Free Day: an

international event implemented simultaneously in the projects of

the Alliance and other networks! We encourage our volunteers to

use their creativity, knowledge and intelligence to find ways to

carry out their working or leisure activities without electricity, in a

    more natural and simple way.

We are all part of a great movement, a global challenge that

connects our lives; it manifests itself in all of our actions – may they be big or small. Saving

energy has an important positive impact on local and international levels.

    r. General Information

HOW TO ARRIVE TO THE CITY CENTER OF BARCELONA (Catalunya square), FROM

    THE AIRPORT?

TRAIN: There is a train that goes from the airport to some stations in Barcelona: “Passeig de

Gràcia” (if you go to Plaça Catalunya you can stop in this station and go walking until there),

Sants (there is a big station; if you have to take another train this should be a good option) and

    other stations.

BUS: You can take the bus called Aerobus. In front of the terminal you’ll see the bus stop. It is

around 5€ one way, and it leaves you in Plaça Catalunya , central square of Barcelona. (It’s

called Aerobus because it comes from, and goes to, the airport, not because it flies.)

    12

TAXI: It will cost you around 30 € (baggage included; they will charge you about 3 € in the final

account as baggage transport). You’ll be kind of 20 minutes in the taxi.

You can rehearse your basic knowledge of Spanish: “Buenos días, vamos para la Plaza

Catalunya, por favor ” (“Good morning, let’s go to Catalunya square, please”); or Catalan: “Bon

dia, anem cap a Plaça Catalunya, siusplau ”.

To prevent the taxi driver making you get to know the entire city before you get to the place,

with a high cost for your pocket, you can either:

    - Tell him you are in a hurry and you need to be there in 25 minutes: “ Tengo prisa, necesito

estar ahí en veinticinco minutos! !” or

    - Tell him to bring you for 30 € approx., baggage included: “Va a costar 30 €, equipaje

    incluido ?”

Maybe he/she would be legal by him/herself, but nobody ever knows

HOW TO GET TO THE MAIN STATIONS IN BARCELONA

Sometimes in the infosheet you are suggested to take a bus to QW EHHFS GTE  and you ask

yourself ¿where is the bus station? Sometimes you are asked to get a train. There are several

stations, but the best you can do is going to the central one. So here we explain you a little

    how to get there.

TRAIN: Sants Estació (Estació de Sants, etc.): You can get there by metro L3 –green line-

or L5 –blue. The name of the metro station is “Sants Estació ”. Once there, follow the signals of

    “RENFE” (Spanish train company).

BUS: Estacíó del Nord: Take the Metro L1 –red line-, go to the station “Arc de Triomf ”; once

there, take the exit with a little bus signalled.

    s. Think of taking a sustainable transport

    Come down to the Earth!

Cocat joins the International Campaign for a Sustainable Voluntary Service and we really

think that we can generate a global change if we do it together! That’s why we

recommend you to take a sustainable transport if possible!

  • 8/20/2019 INFOSHEET CAT12 Requesens Caprice or Castle

    13/18

Centre Excursionista Empordanès  and CocatWelcome to the workcamp projects in Catalonia!!

    13

Think about it! Coming from Italy or France may suppose an emission of between 0,5 and 1

tone of CO2 per person if you travel by plane, from Estonia around 2 tones! (1 tone= 1 Olympic

swimming pool full of CO2, CO2 contributes to the warming of the earth, and this swimming pool

generates serious prejudices to the living species of the earth).

Every year around 20.000 volunteers we travel every year we can generate (we can save!) up

to 20.000 tons of carbon dioxide a year!

Look for alternatives… Flying, travelling by plane, is the most polluting way. The other

transports are much cleaner, and they reserve you unforgettable experiences! Have you

travelled by train? It can be a fantastic experience: you must meet people and see the earth

passing you cross it to get your destination! When you arrive, you’ll be definitely prepared for

    your volunteering experience!

If you want to find cheap train tickets, buy with time and took for the Interrail: www.inter-rail.org,

    www.interrailnet.com.

You can check also the info of the official train company in Spain: http://www.renfe.com/ . You

won’t regret it! And you’ll generate 5 times less contaminants than on a plane!

Bus is a heavier way, but cheaper! www.eurolines.com/en/

    www.barcelonanord.com

And what about ships? Look for that option too! http://www.aferry.com

Also you can travel sharing car: another good solution for “amortizing” contaminations and

meet people! In many countries you can find web pages with this option, so recommend you to

check this possibility in your country (regarding sharing cars web pages in Spain you can

    check: http://compartir.org/, www.blablacar.es, https://www.amovens.com/es)

Or compensate!  If, for whatever reason, you finally decide to travel by plane, you have the

chance to compensate the emissions, giving support to reforestation projects or similar. The

Campaign Baixa a la terra   (Down to the Earth), collaborates with the campaign CeroCO”

http://www.ceroco2.org/. You can go to their page and collaborate! You’ll get recognition for

    your action.

    ABOUT THE ORGANIZATIONS

COCAT, the local organization, you, me... Who is who?

As you already know you are going to participate in a project which came to you through

COCAT, the Catalan platform for international workcamps and voluntary service. Cocat is

made of other organizations which decided to create it so that there would be only one

international representative for all of them.

In Cocat we deal with volunteers going and coming to international workcamps, promote the

learning and international, social participation of young people, promoting individual and

collective development, trying to break or dissolute social inequalities and injustice. (Please

see everything about us in www.cocat.org )

But the one who organizes the camp is a local organization, with which we work very close

and make a common service with common goals. This is the organization you are just about to

meet, and which will bring you a (the) great experience, together with your effort and your

    colleagues, this summer!

    You are in good hands!

    YOUR ROLE AS A VOLUNTEER

What are you supposed to be doing...? What do we expect from you?

As for sure you had some information before on what a workcamp is, we just want to point out

    some short important points.

You are supposed to / and expected to...

    •  Come to participate in a project you’re interested in: there’s some leisure time, but

also you have the compromise of working and collaborating with all you’re asked

for.•  Come with all the will of wanting this to be a great experience for you, your

colleagues and your host; with the will of learning a lot, enjoying, developing,

    helping.

    •  Be participative and pro positive: We are not (only) children anymore, and this

means we are responsible of the development of what’s around us. Our role as a

participant is to try and help to the good development of the project, helping,

proposing and suggesting activities, helping on solving the conflicts which may

appear in any camp, etc. If you don’t know how, don’t worry! We will all learn! ;-)

    •  Obey the laws of the host country and the rules of the workcamp; be responsible for

our own behavior on the project and respect the culture and traditions of the local

    host.

    •  If you come with a friend/partner: you are expected to be part of the group as if you

came alone, accept to be separated into different workgroups or task groups,

always be respectful to speak English when in presence of other volunteers, etc.

Bring your health insurance. The local host will have a third part liability insurance, but

you should also bring your own health insurance.

    ABOUT THE COUNTRY

Where are you coming to???? What is Catalonia?

Catalonia is situated in the North East of the Iberian Peninsula. It has a territory of 32.000 km2

    and around 7.000.000 inhabitants.

The roots of Catalonia as a nation with its own territory and government go back to the early

part of the Middle Ages. Throughout the centuries, the Catalan nation has had various political

institutions and forms of government, each one appropriate to its time, with varying degrees of

sovereignty. During certain periods, these institutions corresponded to the existence of a

sovereign state, while at other more recent times they have represented a sharing of power

with the central Spanish State. The present structure of political power in Catalonia was

defined basically by the 1979 Statute of Autonomy (and now by the new one of 2006) and by

the political institutions of the Generalitat de Catalunya.

Catalonia is a European Mediterranean country with a strong personality and very attached tocustoms and traditions. The Catalonia landscape is very varied. Pyrenees mountains contrast

strongly with coastal regions, although the pleasant environmental quality is generalized.

Catalonia is a very pleasant country to live in.

    LANGUAGE

The language of the country is Catalan, one of the group of western neo-Latin languages

together with Spanish, Portuguese and French. However, everyone learns Spanish at school

so there is no problem for non-Catalan speaking visitors.

    In Barcelona

For cultural events, concerts, etc, there is a little monthly magazine called La Butxaca   (“the

pocket”) where all the cultural events and proposals in Barcelona are published. Really

    interesting!

    OTHER THINGS YOU WILL DISCOVER:

    •  The state of Spain has a great diversity of cultures depending of the regions. Four

languages (Spanish-Castilian, Vasque, Catalan, and Galician) are spoken. Among

other things, in Spain, Catalans are seen as northern people: less close to the topic of

the very happy and noisy Spanish people, more silent, workers,… But do not sub

estimate us! You’ll see how we shout ; -))

    •  You may take in account that we have very Mediterranean timetables: we eat at about

2 or 3 pm (some of us it is typical to have lunch at 4 or so when you are in the beach

or just in summer), and dinner at 10 or so. So you may suffer like we suffer (on the

contrary sense) when we travel abroad!

    •  Barcelona has become very expensive in the latest times…Now we are very

    European… ;-))

    •  We’d like to recommend many things, but this is not the space: you’ll discover it by

    yourselves VERY, VERY SOON!

Little simple glossary to improve your Spanish and ¡your Catalan!

It is always well received when someone makes the effort of communicating in the mother

languages of the region; it’s a sign of interest and respect to the host culture. And it will be

    funnier for you!
