    Introduction

Information Technology (IT) is defined as the design, development, implementation andmanagement of computer-based information systems, particularly software applicationsand computer hardware. Today, it has grown to cover most aspects of computing andtechnology. The reason why it has catapulted in importance is due to the improvingaccessibility, awareness and utility of technology. It is a common fact that a countrys ITpotential is paramount for its march towards global competitiveness, healthy GDP anddefense capabilities.

IT professionals perform a variety of duties ranging from data management, networking, engineering computer hardware, database and software design, to the management andadministration of entire systems. With the already high penetration of conventionalpersonal computer and network technology, coupled with the growing convergence ofinformation, communication and entertainment, the industry is now keenly focused onthe integration with other technologies such as mobile phones, automobiles and

televisions etc, thereby increasing the demand for such jobs. The largest firms globallyinclude IBM, HP, Dell and Microsoft.

In India, it is important to make the distinction between IT and ITES (IT enabledservices). We shall focus on the IT industry here by limiting the discussion to electronicshardware manufacturing and software development and services.

Despite the unprecedented global economic downturn, the Indian IT industry hasweathered the storm well, and will achieve sustainable growth going forward. India isexpected to witness an average 8% salary increase in 2010 and ~50% of companies havestrong hiring plans, according to a survey by global HR consultancy Mercer, giving yet

another indication of the high confidence levels among the countrys corporate housesafter the economy staged a faster-than-expected recovery from the slowdown.

While the larger players continue to lead growth, gradually increasing their share in theindustry aggregate, several high-performing small and medium enterprises have alsostood out.

    Growth Potential

The strong demand for electronic hardware and software in India has been fuelled by avariety of drivers including the high growth rate of the economy, emergence of a vast

domestic market catering to the new generation of young consumers, a thrivingmiddleclass populace with increasing disposable incomes and a relatively low-cost workforce having advanced technical skills.

Indeed, the Government has also identified growth of this sector as a thrust area as thereremains great expectation for significant growth given the fairly low levels of penetrationof technology among the 1.1 billion population; There were only 60 million Internet usersin 2009, 7 million DVD players and personal computers were sold in 2008-09, and 11

million new mobile subscribers were added every month in the same period. In thisscenario there is now a big opportunity to step up the production to gain higher globalshare besides meeting the domestic demands.

The Indian IT sector has also built a strong reputation for its high standards of software

development ability, service quality and information security in the foreign market-which has been acknowledged globally and has helped enhance buyer confidence. Theindustry continues its drive to set global benchmarks in quality and information securitythrough a combination of provider and industry-level initiatives and strengthening theoverall frameworks, creating greater awareness and facilitating wider adoption ofstandards and best practices.

    Future Prospects

The industry is likely to continue growing from strength to strength, as local playersincorporate best in class practices from global counterparts whilst retaining their edge in

terms of lower cost of labor and focused governmental investments.

New graduates with degrees in related fields such as electrical engineering and computerscience can hope to achieve significant professional growth and a healthy remunerationfrom companies looking to hire the best talent available, given the high proportion forthose who leave to pursue jobs in this sector overseas.

    Industry and organizations

A great variety of software companies and programmers in the world comprise thesoftware industry. Software can be quite a profitable industry: Bill Gates, the founder of

Microsoft was the richest person in the world in 2009 largely by selling the MicrosoftWindows and Microsoft Office software products. The same goes forLarry Ellison, largely through his Oracle database software. Through time the software industry hasbecome increasingly specialized.

Non-profit software organizations include the Free Software Foundation, GNU Projectand Mozilla Foundation. Software standard organizations like the W3C, IETF developsoftware standards so that most software can interoperate through standards such asXML, HTML, HTTP orFTP.

Other well-known large software companies include Novell,SAP,Symantec, Adobe

Systems, and Corel, while small companies often provide innovation

Microsoft Corporation is a public multinational corporation headquartered in Redmond,Washington, USA that develops, manufactures, licenses, and supports a wide range ofproducts and services predominantly related to computing through its various productdivisions. Established on April 4, 1975 to develop and sell BASICinterpreters for theAltair 8800, Microsoft rose to dominate the home computeroperating system (OS)

market with MS-DOS in the mid-1980s, followed by the Microsoft Windows line of OSs.The ensuing rise of stock in the company's 1986 initial public offering (IPO) made anestimated four billionaires and 12,000 millionaires from Microsoft employees. Microsoftwould come to dominate other markets as well, notably the office suite market withMicrosoft Office.

Primarily in the 1990s, critics contend the company used monopolistic business practicesand anti-competitive strategies including refusal to deal and tying, put unreasonablerestrictions in the use of its software, and used misrepresentative marketing tactics; boththe U.S. Department of Justice and European Commission found the company inviolation ofantitrust laws. Known for its interviewing process with off-the-wall questions

such as "Why is a manhole coverround?", various studies and ratings were generallyfavorable to Microsoft's diversity within the company as well as its overall environmentalimpact with the exception of the electronics portion of the business.

Paul Allen and Bill Gates, childhood friends with a passion in computer programming, were seeking to make a successful business utilizing their shared skills. The January 1975issue ofPopular Electronics featured Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems's(MITS) Altair 8800microcomputer. Allen noticed that they could program a BASICinterpreterfor the device; after a call from Gates claiming to have a working interpreter,

MITS requested a demonstration. Since they didn't actually have one, Allen worked on asimulatorfor the Altair while Gates developed the interpreter. Although they developedthe interpreter on a simulator and not the actual device, the interpreter worked flawlesslywhen they demonstrated the interpreter to MITS in Albuquerque, New Mexico in March1975; MITS agreed to distribute it, marketing it as Altair BASIC.[3] They officiallyestablished Microsoft on April 4, 1975 with Gates as the CEO.[4] In August 1977 thecompany formed an agreement with ASCII Magazine in Japan, resulting in its firstinternational office, "ASCII Microsoft".The company moved to a new home in Bellevue,Washington in January 1979.

Microsoft entered the OS business in 1980 with its own version ofUnix, called Xenix.[6]

However, it was DOS (Disk Operating System) that solidified the company's dominance. After negotiations with Digital Research failed, IBM awarded a contract to Microsoft toprovide a version of the CP/M OS, which was set to be used in the upcoming IBMPersonal Computer(IBM PC). For this deal, Microsoft purchased a CP/M clone called86-DOS from Seattle Computer Products, branding it as MS-DOS, which IBM rebrandedto PC-DOS. Following the release of the IBM PC in August 1981, Microsoft secured themarketing rights to MS-DOS. Since IBM copyrighted the IBM PC BIOS, othercompanies had to reverse engineerit in order for other OSes to run, resulting in IBM PCcompatibles. Due to various factors, such as MS-DOS's available software selection,Microsoft eventually became the leading PC OS vendor. The company expanded into newmarkets with the release of the Microsoft Mouse in 1983, as well as a publishing division

named Microsoft Press. Paul Allen resigned from Microsoft in February after developingHodgkin's disease.

    Windows and Office

While jointly developing a new OS with IBM in 1985, OS/2, Microsoft releasedMicrosoft Windows, a graphical extension for MS-DOS, on November 20. Microsoftmoved its headquarters to Redmond on February 26, 1986, and on March 13 the companywent public; the ensuing rise in the stock would make an estimated four billionaires and12,000 millionaires from Microsoft employees. Due to the partnership with IBM, in 1990the Federal Trade Commission set its eye on Microsoft for possible collusion; it marked

the beginning of over a decade of legal clashes with the U.S. Government. Microsoftannounced the release of its version of OS/2 to original equipment manufacturers(OEMs) on April 2, 1987; meanwhile, the company was at work on a 32-bit operatingsystem, Microsoft Windows NT, using ideas from OS/2; it shipped on July 21, 1993 witha new modularkernel and the Win32application programming interface (API), makingporting from 16-bit (MS-DOS-based) Windows easier. Once Microsoft informed IBM ofNT, the OS/2 partnership deteriorated.

Microsoft introduced its office suite, Microsoft Office, in 1990. The software bundledseparate office productivity applications, such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. On May 22 Microsoft launched Windows 3.0 with a streamlined user interface graphicsand improvedprotected mode capability for the Intel 386 processor. Both Office andWindows became dominant in their respective areas. Novell, a Word competitor from

19841986, filed a lawsuit years later claiming that Microsoft left part of its APIsundocumented in order to gain a competitive advantage.

    Digital distribution and Vista

Bill Gates handed over the CEO position on January 13, 2000 to Steve Ballmer, an oldcollege friend of Gates and employee of the company since 1980, creating a new positionfor himself as ChiefSoftware Architect. In an interview about his management style in2005, he mentioned that his first priority was to get the people he delegates to in order.Ballmer also emphasized the need to continue pursue new technologies even if initialattempts fail, citing the original attempts with Windows as an example.

Released in January 2007, the next version of Windows, Windows Vista, focused onfeatures, security, and a redesigned user interface dubbed Aero. Microsoft Office 2007,released at the same time, featured a "Ribbon" user interface which was a significantdeparture from its predecessors. Relatively strong sales of both titles helped to produce arecord profit in 2007. The European Union imposed another fine of 899 million($1.4 billion) for Microsoft's lack of compliance with the March 2004 judgment onFebruary 27, 2008, saying that the company charged rivals unreasonable prices for keyinformation about its workgroup andbackoffice servers. Microsoft stated that it was incompliance and that "these fines are about the past issues that have been resolved".

Bill Gates retired from his role as Chief Software Architect on June 27, 2008 while

retaining other positions related to the company in addition to being an advisor for thecompany on key projects. On February 12, 2009, Microsoft announced its intent to opena chain of Microsoft-branded retail stores, and on October 22, 2009 the first retailMicrosoft Store opened in Scottsdale, Arizona; the same day the first store openedWindows 7 was officially released to the public. Windows 7's focus was on refining Vistawith ease of use features and performance enhancements, rather than a large reworking ofWindows.

    History

    Formation and early years

Accenture originated as the business and technology consulting division of accountingfirm Arthur Andersen. The division's origins are in a 1953 feasibility study forGeneralElectric. GE asked Arthur Andersen to automate payroll processing and manufacturing atGE's Appliance Parkfacility near Louisville, Kentucky. Arthur Andersen recommendedinstallation of a UNIVAC I computer and printer, which resulted in the firstcommercially owned computer installation in the United States in 1954. Joe GlickaufwasArthur Andersen's project leader responsible for the payroll processing automationproject. Now considered to be the father of computer consulting, Glickauf headed ArthurAndersen's Administrative Services division for 12 years.

    Splitting from Arthur Andersen

In 1989, that division split from Arthur Andersen and began using the name AndersenConsulting. Both Arthur Andersen and Andersen Consulting consisted of groups oflocally-owned independent partnerships and other entities around the world, each in acontractual agreement with Andersen Worldwide Socit Cooprative (AWSC), a Swissadministrative entity.

By 2000, Andersen Consulting had achieved net revenues exceeding US$9.5 billion andhad more than 75,000 employees in 47 countries,[7] whereas Arthur Andersen hadrevenues of US$9.3 billion with over 85,000 employees worldwide in 2001.

Through the 1990s there was increasing tension between Andersen Consulting and

Arthur Andersen. Andersen Consulting was upset that it was paying Arthur Andersen upto 15% of its profits each year (a condition of the 1989 split was that the more profitableunit - AA or AC - paid the other this sum), while at the same time Arthur Andersen wascompeting with Andersen Consulting through its own newly established businessconsulting service line called Arthur Andersen Business Consulting. This dispute came toa head in 1998 when Andersen Consulting claimed breach of contract against AWSC andArthur Andersen. Andersen Consulting put the 15% transfer payment for that year andfuture years into escrow and issued a claim for breach of contract. In August 2000, as aresult of a conclusion of the International Chamber of Commerce, Andersen Consultingbroke all contractual ties with AWSC and Arthur Andersen. As part of the arbitrationsettlement, Andersen Consulting paid over the sum held in escrow (then $1.2 billion) to

Arthur Andersen, and was required to change its name, resulting in the entity beingrenamed Accenture.

Perhaps most telling about who had "won" the decision was that four hours after thearbitrator made his ruling, Arthur Andersen CEO Jim Wadia suddenly resigned. Industryanalysts and business school professors alike viewed the event as a complete victory forAndersen Consulting.[8] Jim Wadia would provide insight on his resignation years later ata Harvard Business school case activity about the split. It turned out that the ArthurAndersen board passed a resolution saying he had to resign if he didn't get at least anincremental $4 billion (either through negotiation or via the arbitrator decision) for theconsulting practice to split off; hence his quick resignation once the decision was

    announced.

Accounts vary on why the split occurred executives on both sides of the split citegreed and arrogance on the part of the other side, and executives on the AndersenConsulting side maintained breach of contract when Arthur Andersen created a secondconsulting group, AABC (Arthur Andersen Business Consulting) which began tocompete directly with Andersen Consulting in the marketplace. Many of the AABC firmswere bought out by other consulting companies in 2002, most notably, HitachiConsulting and KPMG Consulting, which later changed its name to BearingPoint.

Andersen Consulting's change of name proved to be fortunate as it avoided the taint whenArthur Andersen was effectively dissolved as a result of its role in the Enron scandal.

    Emergence of Accenture

On January 1, 2001 Andersen Consulting adopted its current name, "Accenture". Theword "Accenture" is supposedly derived from "Accent on the future". Although amarketing consultancy was tasked with finding a new name for the company, the name"Accenture" was submitted by Kim Petersen, a Danish employee from the company's

Oslo, Norway office, as a result of an internal competition. Accenture felt that the nameshould represent its will to be a global consulting leader and high performer, and alsointended that the name should not be offensive in any country in which Accentureoperates.

    Place of Incorporation Change

Accenture announced on May 26, 2009 that its Board of Directors unanimously approvedchanging the companys place of incorporation to Ireland from Bermuda and wouldbecome Accenture plc.

The company cited several reasons for the change:

Ireland's sophisticated, well-developed corporate, legal and regulatoryenvironment

Ireland's long history of international investment and long-established commercial

relationships, trade agreements and tax treaties with European Union memberstates, the United States and other countries where Accenture does business

Ireland's stable political and economic environment with the financial and legalinfrastructure to meet Accenture's needs

The change was approved and became effective on September 1, 2009, the beginning ofthe company's 2010 fiscal year.

While Ireland is the company's headquarters for tax and legal purposes, much of theadministration actually occurs inNew York City and Chicago, two of its largest officesworldwide.

    Former Bermuda incorporation

In October 2002, the Congressional General Accounting Office (GAO) identifiedAccenture as one of four publicly-traded federal contractors that were incorporated in atax haven country.[11] The other three, unlike Accenture, were incorporated in the UnitedStates before they re-incorporated in a tax haven country, thereby lowering their U.S.taxes. Still, critics[who?] have panned Accenture's incorporation in Bermuda, generallybecause they viewed Accenture as having been a U.S.-based company trying to avoidU.S. taxes.[12] The GAO itself did not characterize Accenture as having been a U.S.-basedcompany; it stated that "prior to incorporating in Bermuda, Accenture was operating as a

series of related partnerships and corporations under the control of its partners throughthe mechanism of contracts with a Swiss coordinating entity."
