YEAR 01In their first year (Information Systems I), students focus on applications of information systems and technology within organisations and obtain a thorough theoretical and practical grounding in the fundamentals of the discipline.

In their second year (Information Systems II), students acquire extensive analysis, design and database skills. Programming is also introduced at this level.

The third year (Information Systems III) focuses primarily on information systems development, preparing students for entry into the Information Systems profession. Students gain valuable experience from the joint development of an information system.

DescriptionsŸ Systems Development Project – In this course, students engage in and

complete a major system development project, drawing upon the knowledge and skills learnt throughout the degree.

Ÿ IS/IT Project Management – This course covers the factors necessary for successful management in IS projects. Both technical and behavioral aspects of project management are applied within the content of an IS project.

Ÿ Emergent Technologies – The purpose of this course is to develop an understanding and the skills for systems development using new and emergent technologies, such as web development principles and practices, web services, e-Commerce and m-Commerce applications. The course also focuses on web application development using ASP.NET, with the aim of equipping the students with the technical and theoretical knowledge and skills to build advanced web applications for their final year Systems Development project.

Ÿ Enterprise Information Systems - This course aims to familiarise students with the enterprise and enterprise resource planning systems and the challenges of enterprise architecture.

Ÿ Mobile Application Development – This course introduces students to mobile development. The skills learned during this course will enable students to design and develop their own mobile applications.

DescriptionsŸ Introduction to Computers & Computing - This course aims to provide

students from all disciplines with the necessary end user computing skills to advance in their respective academic areas.

Ÿ Essentials of IT - In this course, students are introduced to computers in general, as well as the fundamentals of how computers are connected to each other (i.e. networked) and how they exchange information.

Ÿ Fundamentals of Information Systems - The purpose of the course is to provide students with a fundamental introduction to how computers, data, processes and people are linked, so they can understand how these elements are active in organisations and the community.

DescriptionsŸ Introduction to Programming for Business – This course provides

programming development skills suited to a commercial environment. The language used at present is C# (pronounced “C Sharp”)

Ÿ Databases – This course covers IS design and implementation within a database management system environment. Learners will demonstrate their mastery of the design process acquired in earlier courses.

Why Study Information Systems?The degree is designed for Bachelor of Commerce (Information Systems)students who wish to specialise in Information Systems (IS). Information systems specialists focus on integrating information technology solutions and business processes to meet the information needs of businesses, the community and government. The goal is to enable them to achieve their objectives in an e�ective and e�cient manner. This discipline's perspective of "Information Technology" emphasises information and sees technology as an instrument to enable the generation, processing and distribution of needed information. This degree is aligned to the international requirements for undergraduate programmes of the Association for Information Systems (AIS) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

Perhaps the best way to show the importance of is to Information Systemsconsider the impact that it has on your own life. Try to imagine what your daily life would be like without : can you imagine Information Systems no television, no cellphone, no Facebook, the collapse of the banking system...? Most of our lives will be a�ected dramatically.

Now stop to consider the times that you have been irritated or frustrated by the ine�ciency of a large organisation, and you will see that technology alone is not the solution to business problems.

Information Systems not simply about computers, is or learning how to use a popular computer package - it’s about how businesses can make the best use of computer technology to provide the information to achieve their goals.

Ÿ System Design and Implementation - This course covers the physical design and implementation of information systems applications, with specific focus on emerging distributed computing environments using traditional and contemporary development methodologies.

Ÿ Business and Systems Analysis – This course focuses primarily on the analysis phase of the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and supports the development of skills in requirements gathering and UML Modelling. Furthermore, students gain valuable, practical experience through the analysis and specification of the requirements for a pseudo system.
