    Analysis:

I collaborated with a fifth grade teacher for this unit. After looking at numerous pieces of data(including CRCT scores, benchmark scores, and classroom grades), we decided that the students

needed assistance in the area of reference materials. According to their scores, less than half of

the class of 24 had mastered the concept of reference materials. The students had receivedinstruction in this area for the past three years, but it had yet to stick. The students usedictionaries daily, but that was the extent of their reference material usage.

The fifth grade teacher and I decided that traditional sit-with-your-dictionary activities would notwork. After all, they hadnt the first two times the students learned about them. We decided

that internet resources would need to be utilized. I created a WebQuest for the students to follow

through in order to answer some culminating questions.

    Reflection:

I really enjoyed teaching this unit to our fifth graders. They were not excited at first to be

learning, yet again, about reference materials. Their eyes brightened up when I pulled out thePowerPoint and the WebQuest however. I think by providing them with an alternate way of

learning really helped. In the past they had to sit down with the reference materials and listen to a

lecture. With this unit the students were not only able to work at their own pace, but they were

also in charge of their learning. This gave many of the students a sense of leadership. My onlywish for this unit is that we would have more time to spend on it. Because it was taught during

their weekly library time, the students only had 30 minutes to participate in the lessons.
