SCAMPwillbethelargestresearchstudyintheworldtryingto getanswers to these important research questions.

Cognition = THINKING! It is how people think, make

decisions and process information.

SCAMP is the Study of Cognition, Adolescents and Mobile Phones

Adolescents = teenagers/young people

What is research?Research means finding out more about something.

What is the SCAMP study trying to find out? Lotsofpeopleusemobilephones, butsomepeopleareconcernedabouteffectstheymighthaveonourbrains.

 Theresearchdonesofarsuggeststhatmobilephonesarenotbadforourhealth.Theproblemisthatmostoftheresearchdonehasbeenonadults,sowedon’tknowwhetheryoungpeople’sbrainsmightbemoresensitivetomobilephonesbecausetheirbrainsarestilldeveloping.

 Wewanttocollectinformationabouthowyoungpeople’sthinking(cognitive)abilitiesdevelopbetweentheagesof11to14,toseewhetherusingamobilephoneorsimilarwirelessdevices(suchastablets,laptops,cordlessphones)mightaffectthesethinkingskills.

Taking part in the SCAMP study means…

…you and all Year 7 pupils in your school will do an assessment on computers during lesson time:

Theassessmentwillinvolvetasks aboutletters, numbers, and shapes and questions about your mobile phone use and lifestyle.

 Someofthesetasksarelikepuzzlesandothers requireyoutorememberthings.

 Youwillbeallowedtopracticebeforeyou dothetasks.Mostpeopleenjoythese tasks.

 Theassessmentwillbedoneagainwhen youareinYear9.

What does taking part in SCAMP involve?

…with your parents’ permission you can answer more questions online at home:

Therearetwoquestionnairestobedoneonlineathome, oneis for you and one is for your parents. If you both complete these questionnaires you willhavetheopportunitytoreceivea£20giftcertificate*to thank youforyourhelp.

…with your parents’ permission, the research team will also look at:

Howmuchyouuseyourmobilephone,as recorded by your mobile phone operator.

Informationthatisrecorded by doctors when you are ill.

 Informationthatisrecorded about your education.

Why do I need to be asked these questions? You might think some questions are not related to your thinking abilities or usingmobilephones, buttheyareallimportant.Thereare lots of things that can affectyourthinkingabilitiese.g.howwellyousleep,orchangesinyourbody.Weneed to ask questions about thesethingssothatwedon’tget them mixed up with how using a mobile phone might affectyourthinkingabilities.

...when I use my mobile phone?Weneedtoknowabouthow much and how often you areusingamobilephone.Wemayuse information from your mobile phone operator to check how your mobilephoneusechangesovertime.Wewillneverseeinformationaboutthecontentofmessages,websitesvisitedorcontentdownloadedonyourphone.Wewillalsoneverseeinformation about the people you speak to or who you exchange messages with on your phone.

...by my doctor?Weneedtoknowaboutany illnesses or treatments youmayhavehadandwemay check how your health is in the future.

...about my education?Weneedtoknowhowyouhavebeendoingatschool.Wemayuseinformationfrom your educational records to check how you progress in school in the future.

WHY DOES THE SCAMP STUDY NEED INFORMATION RECORDED…

What questions will I be asked? We will ask you questions about:

your use of mobile phones and other similar devices

how you feel and behave   things you do (e.g. sleeping, eating, sports, playing video games, watching TV, playing music)

whether you get headaches   your hearing  how noisy it is where you live and how you feel about this

how much you have grown recentlySome of these questions will be asked in the school assessment and others in the online questionnaire at home.
