noe valleySurrounded by beautiful hills, Noe Valley is a nestled community, full of families, kids, dogs, and

complete with the requisite coffee shops and weekend eateries. A strong community exists, and yet it feels removed from the city; it remains however, emblematic of the city in spite of its feeling.

castroA historical center of the city, for the GLBTQ communities, it is a politically progressive

community and home to young families as well as the strongest community for GLBTQ people in a diverse city.

hayes valleyThis neighborhood’s foundations rest around the performing arts district and has developed into a

north beachHome of “Little Italy” and the many cafés and Italian restaurants. Home to the Beat Movement and still

connects deeply to those historical pasts. It is the home of many famous and glorious bookstores, nightclubs, small boutiques, and a multicultural dining scene.

daly cityThe Westlake District in Daly City is residential, less expensive, quiet and safe. Walking distance to

BART, 10–15 min drive to the San Francisco campus, 10 min walk to shopping center (Safeway, Trader Joe’s, Walgreen’s, Ross, Chipotle, Starbucks, Boulevard Cafe, and much more). Family community with a lot of schools. 5–10 min drive to Ocean Beach.

bernal heightsUrban village home to many artists and progressives. More recently, young families are calling this place

home. The community is dog friendly as well with many canine parks.

sunsetThe funky, laid back part of the city is often hidden beneath blankets of fog, yet is remains one of the

warmest parts of San Francisco. The Inner Sunset is home to many restaurants, coffee shops, and students, this commu-nity maintains a youthful, slow pace. Both USF and UCSF are nearby, as are Golden Gate Park and the Pacific Ocean. The Outer Sunset is mostly middle-class home own-ing families, with its own brand of coffee shops and restaurant crowds.

keep in mind

> Before moving in: Look over renter’s agreement thoroughly

> After moving in: Obtain renter’s insurance, purchase lamp light timers (to prevent walking into a dark house)

> Important considerations: costs, parking, room/house mates, location, laundry facilities

> File a change of address form with the USPS

> Set up your utilities at your new apartment

safety and security

> Have emergency numbers posted to include city police, California Highway Patrol (CHP), and Auto Insurance.

> Smoke detectors save lives: Local housing codes require landlords to provide smoke detectors and it is your responsibility to test them regularly.

> Protect your personal belongings: It is highly recommended that you obtain renter’s insurance to insure your belongings as your landlord’s insurance will not cover your belongings. You may be covered under a family members’ plan or you can contact the major insurance carriers to obtain your own. It is relatively inexpensive and a great investment.

> Always lock your doors: Lock your doors after you enter and after you leave so that you and your belongings are not vulnerable to crime.
