sAbout the SAE-A
Welcome to the SAE-ASAE-A was founded in Melbourne in 1927 to address the need for further education for all facets surrounding Automotive Engineering and now encompasses all mobility engineering industries in the Asia Pacific region.
The vision of the SAE-A is to advance the mobility and engineering professions across Australasia through the transfer of technical knowledge and skills, encouragement of research and development in the private, education and government sectors and involvement of our members in the development and maintenance of Australasian and global technical standards.
Today in our 90th year, the Society encompasses a large spectrum of the Australian mobility industry including; aerospace, rail, heavy commercial, mining, caravan, aftermarket, service & repair and off-road vehicles. As a result, our membership consists of trade, aspiring students, industry-qualified professionals and government representatives, who join as an individual or corporate member.
I encourage you to explore what the SAE-A has to offer; with high quality events and training, professional development services, industry relevant publications, awards for Excellence and Formula SAE-A.
If you are already a member of the SAE-A, this is your Society. Through our publications, events, substantial discounts and networking opportunities, as a member you are able to pursue professional excellence, address global issues and share expertise across all mobility branches.
If you are not yet a member, we look forward to you joining our community in 2017 and beyond.
Andrew George Chief Executive Officer

History of the SAE-ASince the inception of the organisation in 1927, the SAE-A has undergone numerous changes in title; from the Australian Institute of Automotive Engineers, to the Institution of Automotive and Aeronautical Engineers, before settling on the Society of Automotive Engineers - Australasia in 1967.
The Society was originally formed to increase the technical knowledge for “practical and scientific persons” and “to promote the science and practice of automotive engineering.” (IAAE Journal, Jan-Feb 1964, page 2). This still holds true today.
The Journal continues, “The Institution was envisaged as an Australian counterpart to overseas organisations of automotive and mechanical engineers... The Institution has emerged as Australia’s top body of Automotive engineering experts.”
The title of SAE-A adopted in December 1966, with the name change occurring at the start of 1967. George Dennis, President of the Society at the time, writes in the 1967 Journal, “The new title embraces all forms of self-propelled transport...The new image will be more readily identifiable at all levels in Government, Industry and Trade alike.”
Fast forward to 2017, and the SAE-A is celebrating its 90th
year of mobility engineering excellence; providing valuable technical services to mobility engineers in the Australasian region.

SummaryofBenefitsMembership with the SAE-A gains you access to the engineering industry through Society events, professional development opportunities, and access to industry committees and divisions. Members receive publications and receive substantial discounts across networking and training opportunities.
The Society informed me of an engineering opportunity. After a visit and interview, I was offered a full time role. My dream of working as an engineer is now a reality.
The Society’s services are run well and are quite useful to building my career. Also, the third party benefits are gold!
The SAE-A publications are interesting and beneficial. I found the articles about transitioning [from Automotive] to other sectors very interesting.
