The event will take place rain or shine: bring a colourful raincoat or umbrella!

Eat a good breakfast.

Bring a nutritious lunch, water and a pen.

The Walk is done … on foot! In-line skates, skateboards, bikes and other

means of locomotion are not permitted.

It is important to wear good walking shoes.

Photos and videos will be taken throughout the day!

We are not responsible for any objects lost or broken during the World Walk.

There might be traffic on the way downtown. Favour public transport or leave

very early in the morning.

A first-aid team will be on site, assisted by our 350 volunteers.

Getting to the start zone

IMPORTANT! A week or two before the World Walk, we will send you additional documents about the meeting point for buses, disembarkation of passengers and parking for buses. You will also find this information on our web site Marchemonde.ca. A team of volunteers will welcome you at Jeanne-Mance Park and police officers will be on site to give you directives.

Public transport itinerary

ROUTE A: METRO ORANGE LINE

Get off at Mont-Royal station, then take bus 11 Montagne going west, all the way to Jeanne-Mance Park.

ROUTE B: METRO GREEN LINE

Get off at Place-Des-Arts station, then take bus 80 Av. du Parc or bus 435 Express Du Parc/Côte-des-Neiges going north, all the way to Jeanne-Mance Park.

To leave the finish zone Boarding at 1:45 p.m. for all!

IMPORTANT! All buses parked at Jeanne-Mance Park must mandatorily leave by 1:45 pm and follow the police officers’ directives. No buses will be authorized to leave before or after that time. For security reasons, police officers will wait for everyone to be in their buses before allowing any vehicle to leave their zone. If you must leave earlier, contact us early so we can suggest other alternatives. Just like last year, buses will be parked in the same place for disembarkation and boarding, all around Jeanne-Mance Park.

Mark your bus to find it easily after the event.

“The World Walk is an initiatory rite of passage to responsible citizenship, to civic involvement. The day you participate in the Walk, you’re not alone anymore, you’re part of a group of committed people who want to change the world in a positive way.” Today, young people make up over 50% of the global population (including all the children). Yet, they do not form a homogeneous group, and some are more severely affected by inequalities than others. Everywhere on the planet, millions of young people face discrimination by reason of their sex, sexual orientation, race, caste, religion, ethnic group, physical abilities or place of residence.

Rooted in the belief that this situation is not unavoidable, the 48th edition of the World Walk provides a space to recognize that young people have multiple identities, each acting as a potential source of inequality: being young, being a woman, being a newcomer, etc. The Walk aims to remind us that these multiple identities, along with the diversity they bring to the world, are actually a strength. By having many identities, by evolving in a diversified community, by being curious about the various cultures that populate the Earth, young people are more likely to learn to be tolerant, to live together in harmony, to protect the common good and, ultimately, to achieve peace.

“The future is not defined by what will happen, but by what we will do about it,”1 said philosopher Henri Bergson. While young people are tomorrow’s agents of change, they are, foremost, today’s agents of change. This is why, on the day of the Walk, all of Montreal’s institutions open a space for them to peacefully contaminate the world with civic values: help for one another, solidarity, fair trade, sustainable development, etc. It is also why their inspiration for a better world is going global: in 2019, the World Walk will be duplicated in 11 European countries!

Our educational approach is rooted in recognizing and valuing the commitment of young people who, throughout the year, raise funds for development projects, get people to sign petitions and connect with their community. But above all, it is based on the belief that this manifestive day must foster hope and utopia. I look forward to seeing you all at the Walk on May 11 to positively change the world.

DNA of the World Walk

On May 11, 2018, the World Walk will host its 48th edition. Following in the footsteps

of the Marche 2/3, Oxfam-Québec’s World Walk is a solidarity event that enables

Québec youth to:

Express their solidarity and call for a just world, free of poverty.

Use their influence as involved citizens to show that a new world is

needed and that, together, we can build it. Collect funds to bring concrete action to the most vulnerable communities of the world. Achieve a 6-kilometre physical challenge.

A flamboyant and entertaining walk!

BEFORE THE START: A POWERFUL RALLYING CALL Again this year, we are organizing an unforgettable rallying call. We will demonstrate the amazing impact of our collective power when we stand together.

THE COURSE: MANY BEATS, ONE UNIQUE SOLIDARITY

Like last year, the course of the World Walk will cover a 6-kilometre loop starting and finishing in the same place. Entertainment on the course will be divided in six “zones”, each set to a different beat and designed to take the participants through a genuine rite of passage.

Silence Zone

A PAUSE in a fast-paced world In between two texts, two pictures, who still takes time to reflect … in silence? Taking a minute of silence and being quiet in solidarity with those who don’t have the right to speak: this is the challenge we will take on once again this year … with several thousand joining in. Because when great minds meet, anything can happen! Be sure to come by the registration table when you arrive. Gag stickers, symbols of the crushed freedom of expression in the world, will be handed out for the minute of silence.

Recognition Zone

Because YOUTH in Québec are positively changing the world The end of the Walk takes us back to the essential part of our journey: the Southern communities who benefit from the support of participating schools. A nod to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Honduras, but mostly a moment to highlight the success of students who, collectively, have contributed to improving thousands of lives.

Fiesta Zone

A CELEBRATION for the world we want. After the emotions brought on by the minute of silence, it’s time to let loose! Music, dances, ethnic numbers: we throw a big manifestive fiesta to celebrate our power as citizens in flamboyant and creative ways!

Signature Zone Our signature for 2018: “The Power of Diversity”. Young People will address a message to the leaders so as to recognize diversity and promote inclusive policies that guarantee the rights of everyone. Young people do not make up a homogeneous group and some are more affected by inequalities than others. Everywhere on the planet, millions of young people experience discrimination based on their sex, sexual orientation, race, caste, religion, ethnic group, physical abilities or place of residence. The multidimensional aspect of the systemic discrimination experienced by youth deserves special attention. The Oxfam team wishes to provide a space for young people to express their multiple identities and celebrate the Power of Diversity.

Sign the Youth Manifesto so the fight against inequalities can be at the heart of

Challenge 3: Reach out to your local media to

highlight your participation to the Walk We are asking students to send a press release to their local media to announce their

school’s participation in the 48th World Walk.

Challenge 4: Invite the “Boussole du leadership” or

the “Jeunes et inégalités” workshop to your school

These free workshops enable students to reflect on themselves and on the inequalities they experience, to discover their personality type and to see how it can be paired with different modes of expression to initiate social change. At the end of the workshops, participants will have determined their own course of action to fight the inequalities that preoccupy them. Challenge 6: Take part in the Entertainment Tool Contest

Express your solidarity through creative and eco-friendly ideas! Proudly carry your entertainment tools and spread your messages on the “Power of Diversity” or fair trade (for Magasins du Monde). In doing so, publicly sow the seeds of a world based on the values you believe in. Giant puppets, banners, costumes… It’s up to you! Call on your creativity to create a flamboyant World Walk!

Plan transportation for your entertainment tools! For safety reasons, you will not be authorized to use the back doors of the bus to pull out your entertainment tools in the parking zone.

Stand out to win!

Use as many recyclables as you can.

Work in teams! A group can present more than one entertainment tool.

The entertainment tool must not slow down the procession: strength, weather resistance and lightness are criteria to consider. You will have to carry your tool for 6 kilometres!

If you make a banner, do not forget to pierce holes for the wind to pass through.

Fundraising: Where does the money go?

SPOTLIGHT ON Women Who Fish Empowering women fishers to promote their economic and social inclusion Country: Honduras. Town of Amapala, Valle Departement. In Honduras, more than half the population suffers from food insecurity. Poverty is particularly severe in Indigenous communities and in rural areas. One of the main features of this project is to focus attention on youth and women. Social economy enterprises, managed by women, will be created to reinforce women’s abilities and promote their entrepreneurial skills. As a result, women will actively participate in the improvement of their living conditions, as well as those of their community. As well, a school will be set up to teach best practices in fishing, in order to promote initiatives that preserve marine resources and protect the environment. Goals and expected results:

Enable women and young women to contribute to their country’s economic development.

Set up three specialized cooperatives.

Support the organization of meeting spaces and ways to exchange experiences. Train and coach youth and women’s collectives. Inform and mobilize community and local groups on issues related to sustainable

fishing. Support populations in community management and entrepreneurship. Improve ancestral practices in order to restore biodiversity.

Your support is changing lives: Thanks to the support of school groups like yours, this project will enable hundreds of Honduran families to implement sustainable practices for managing natural resources, to increase their income, to eat better and to improve their living conditions. Young women will be better equipped to contribute to the development of their country, take on responsibilities and meet the challenges ahead. Healthy Mothers, Healthy Children Investing in health to reduce poverty and inequality

Weakened by more than 20 years of conflict, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is one of the poorest countries in the world, with 87.7% of the population living below the poverty line. In this context, women and children are especially vulnerable. One child out of ten will not see the age of five and one woman out of 24 will die of maternal causes. Yet, these deaths can be avoided through simple prevention methods or inexpensive treatments. This is one of Oxfam-Québec’s objectives. Refurbishing of 20 maternity hospitals. Support to health data management. Information and awareness-raising campaigns in communities. Strengthening of the Société congolaise de gynécologie et d’obstétrique

(SCOGO) (Congolese Society for Gynaecology and Obstetrics). Capacity building for 15 women’s associations and 15 youth associations. Creation of spaces for dialogue between women, youth and health authorities.

When you arrive on May 11, make your way to the registration tables located in the start zone to confirm your presence and the total number of young participants accompanying you. We will also give you the gag stickers for the minute of silence.

What to do with the cash and cheques collected?

If you receive cash, please write us a cheque for the corresponding amount because we are unable to accept cash.

Cheques must be made out to Oxfam-Québec. Do not forget to write the name of your school on the back of the cheque!

As much as possible, avoid bringing cash on the day of the event. It is best to send us the amount collected before the Walk!

Objective: Zero Waste and Green Procurement! With sustainable dishes, collection bins (for garbage, recycling and compost) and a

Green Squad on site to answer questions on waste management, Oxfam-Québec puts

everything in place to minimize waste production! From the caterer (seasonal and

organic products) to the banner printer, most or our suppliers are eco-friendly.

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Choose public transport to come to the Walk (see p. 4 of the Guide).

On the bus, encourage your driver to respect speed limits and avoid idling unnecessarily.

At the end of the event, salvage the materials used to make your entertainment tools and placards.

Bring eco-friendly lunch boxes (e.g. local products, no garbage and compostable waste).
