Glossary
Biopsies – small tissue samples which are looked at under a microscope
Chemotherapy – drug treatment which destroys cancer cells
Colonoscopy – examination of the large bowel using a flexible camera (thin tube).
Colorectal cancer – cancer of the large bowel including the colon and rectum
CT (computed tomography) scan – specialised scan which produces very thin, detailed pictures of the inside of the body
CT virtual colonoscopy - specialised scan which takes a series of x-rays to build up a 3-dimensional picture of your bowel
Flexible sigmoidoscopy – examination of the lower left hand side of the large bowel using a flexible camera.
Gastroenterologist – a specialist doctor who looks after people with disorders of the digestive system
Lymph nodes – glands in the lymphatic system
Metastases – areas of cancer spread
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan – specialised scan which uses magnet technology to obtain detailed pictures inside the body
Oncologist – a specialist cancer doctor
Pathologist – a specialist doctor who looks at tissue samples such as biopsies and operation specimens
PET (positron emission tomography) – specialised scan which produces detailed 3-D pictures of the inside of the body.
Radiologist – a specialist doctor who looks at x-rays and scans

Radiotherapy – low dose radiation (x-ray) treatment which destroys cancer cells
Rigid Sigmoidoscopy – examination of the rectum using a rigid telescope (thin tube).
Stent – short wire mesh tube inserted to open up a narrowed area of bowel
TRUS (Trans rectal ultra sound scan) – ultra-sound scan of the rectum and anus
