Forward This booklet is intended to give a background to the school and provide a broad outline of the policies and procedures through which the school functions. The school has few ‘rules' but many guidelines based on the four keys to success which we see as requirements in all situations. The four keys that our children learn are confidence, organisation, perseverance, and getting along. We believe that the booklet will be of value to both new parents, as an introduction to the school, and to those with a longer association, as a reference. To new parents we offer a warm welcome to our district and our school. Your children are very welcome and we hope that your stay with us will be enjoyable and profitable both educationally and socially. To all parents we ask that this booklet be kept in a convenient place and that you keep with it other information, i.e. notices, etc, sent home by the school. Adherence to the guidelines contained will ensure that the school continues to function smoothly. Finally the school aims towards optimum development for all children. If at any time you are concerned about any aspect of your children's development please phone the school for an appointment to discuss the matter with the class teacher.

Our Children The image we share of a successful future learner is a student with a strong sense of values and personal identity confident to take the risks necessary to continue learning in what will be a challenging and unpredictable future. We want our students to be equipped not only with the ‘foundation skills’ of literacy and numeracy but also with a range of future oriented attributes including confidence with information technology. We want them to be courageous thinkers and problem solvers. Most importantly we want our students to be open to new ideas and able to realise their own dreams, talents and personal visions.

The learning experiences the school provides need to ensure students keep this image in mind. We believe that helping students realise this faith in their own ability will be the best guarantee for them to achieve future success.

Our Values

Learning is what we are all here for. We love learning. We set goals. We work hard. We persevere. We encourage sensible risk taking and mistakes. We encourage feedback so that we can learn more and be the best we can be. Respect We respect all people’s rights and views. We celebrate diversity. Integrity We act with integrity and honesty so people know what we stand for and know that what we say we will do, will be done. Teamwork We are inclusive. We work together to achieve common goals. High Standards We aim to soar to new heights. When we attain our goals, we acknowledge and celebrate these achievements. We attempt to achieve high standards with low anxiety. Humour We work hard and know that having fun is essential for our health.

1. We are effective thinkers. The curriculum helps to power this wing in flight. 2. School motto – helps us to achieve our goal to be better than before. 3. We are effective communicators. The curriculum also helps to power this wing in

flight. 4. The school logo gives us a sense of identity and citizenship. 5. Learning Keys or Key Competencies (colour coded) are the dispositions for learning

and cover all learning areas. They unlock learning. 6. We are lifelong learners.

What we value at MBS guides us in flight.

Our Learning

We grow leaders and lifelong learners. We grow courageous and critical thinkers. This does not happen by accident. Our curriculum challenges children to question what they learn and it encourages them to engage in authentic learning activities. Children learn to understand the learning intention of an activity and just what the success criteria are so that they can judge how successful they have been and further, just where they could improve. Teachers facilitate this process. Learning and applying the four keys to success (confidence, organisation, perseverance and getting along) are critical. A thinking curriculum provides children with thinking skills strategies that assist them in all aspects of their lives. Children with special talents are identified and provided with appropriately differentiated learning opportunities. This is a strength of our school. Success in all fields of endeavour is celebrated. Our Year 6 Graduation each December is a fitting ceremony at which our staff and community acknowledge and celebrate our students’ learning and success.

Our School Mairangi Bay School was established in 1967 to provide primary schooling for children living in the developing residential area adjacent to Mairangi Bay. The School setting is a very pleasant one on the north facing slope behind the bay. Amenities include a community hall, computer pod and recreational play equipment. Teaching resources are modern and are kept up-to-date. Our custom built library and resource centre provides a hub for learning. The school intranet and large computer network help all learners to harness 21st Century technologies. The area is now well-established with high quality, well maintained homes.

Expectations for children are high. Over the years the school has gained a reputation for providing high quality education, especially in literacy and numeracy, and a stimulating and varied learning programme that meets all needs. Appropriate extension of children with special abilities and talents is particularly important to us. Parents tell us they like: (1)The quality of the education and standards; (2) the quality of staff; and (3) the inclusive sense of community we provide. The school enjoys active parent participation and support in all activities. The school teaches to the New Zealand National Curriculum and has an agreed Charter with the New Zealand Ministry of Education. This charter is available on the school website and in the school office foyer. The philosophy of the school is embodied in our Mission Statement. Our school’s purpose is to provide quality programmes and experiences that enrich and extend children’s learning so that their individual abilities are fully realised and they grow as motivated, confident and responsible young people.

Addressing Concerns A school has thousands and thousands of personal interactions each day and there will always be misunderstandings and mistakes. If you have a concern we need to know. Always in the first instance talk with the person who has immediate influence. If it is about your child’s welfare or learning then the class teacher is the person to contact. Any issues that require further undertaking will then be directed to the syndicate leader and after that any matters still not resolved would be handed on to the Deputy Principal. After School Arrangements From time to time parents make arrangements for children to play with others after school or be picked up from school by neighbours or friends. Please ensure that children clearly understand the arrangements made before they leave home. Children are not permitted to make telephone calls for play or other arrangements unless an emergency situation exists.

Assembly Every second Friday a student lead assembly is held. Parents are welcome. It is held at 1.30 pm. Watch the newsletter for special assemblies. We also host visiting performers. Syndicate assemblies are also held regularly.

- 11 -

Attendances and Absences Irregular attendance is a major cause of learning difficulty. Home and school must work together to ensure that each child attends school as often as possible. Attendance requirements permit absence only if a child is ill. Children may not be kept away for any other reason. If a child is absent please phone 478 8424 (24 hours). If a prolonged absence is expected please telephone the school office or email [email protected]. You are required to provide a reason for absence. Please be firm in the matter of attendance to ensure that children attend school when they are well and also that they stay at home when they are ill to avoid infecting other children. If a child is continually reluctant to come to school it may mean unhappiness about some situation. Please talk to the class teacher or make an appointment to speak with the teacher through the office. Bicycles Only those children in Year 6, who have a roadworthy bicycle and approved cycle helmet, and who pass a comprehensive Road Safety Test taken by the School Traffic Officer will be permitted to ride their bicycles to and from school. Children qualifying in all respects will be issued with a bicycle licence. This licence can be withdrawn if dangerous riding practices are observed. Helmets are compulsory. Parents must check that children are using their bicycles sensibly when travelling to or from school and that bicycles are kept in a safe condition. Bicycles at school are to be parked in the rack provided, locks are strongly recommended. Board of Trustees

The school is governed by a Board of Trustees elected every 3 years. The board comprises 7 members, 5 elected by parents, 1 elected by the staff, and the Principal who is automatically a member. Additional members may be co-opted by the board. The Board meets twice a term in the staffroom. Dates of meetings are advertised in the school newsletter. Parents and members of the public are welcome to attend Board meetings. If you are interested in becoming a trustee, contact the Principal or Board Chairperson. Book Clubs Book club operated at the school through Scholastic Books. This provides the opportunity for parents to purchase reasonably priced paperbacks for their children, about four times a year.

- 12 -

Camp School camp is often a highlight for students. Our school employs instructors for any higher risk activities and enforces strict adult child ratios. Check our website for photos. Information is sent to parents and a meeting for parents is held before camp.

Damage to School Property Where damage to school property is caused through wilful destruction, undue carelessness, or disregard for rules, it is school policy to inform parents of this and seek their co-operation in overcoming the problem. Individual circumstances determine the action taken but restitution is expected preferably with the student/s concerned paying towards cost of replacement or repair. Auckland Regional Dental Service Services are provided FREE to all pre-school, primary and intermediate school children. For details of the nearest School Dental Clinic open during the holiday period please contact 0200TALK TEETH or 0800 285 583. A list of clinics currently open is also available on www.ards.co.nz Discipline From time to time individual children do present problems for themselves and others. This is normally dealt with in a positive fashion through discussion and reasoning. If this is not successful other strategies which form our School Behaviour Management Programme, including re-positioning in the classroom, writing an apology letter, or time out may be necessary to protect the rights and safety of others. Consultation with parents will be instituted if problems become long term or more serious.

- 13 -

Educational Visits Educational trips and visits enhance learning by providing opportunities for seeing and doing. Many aspects of the curriculum are better understood when students gain knowledge and experience away from the classroom. Regulations require a pre-determined ratio of adults to students depending on the type and duration of the visit. Trips will not go ahead if the required ratio cannot be met. Forthcoming visits are advised to parents through the school newsletter or syndicate letters issued by each syndicate team.

Enrolments Our school is the preferred education provider for more people than we can accommodate. The school has an enrolment scheme to manage entry and ensure optimal learning opportunities. “As of right” entry is given to those residing in a defined area surrounding the school. See the map enclosed or visit the school website at www.mairangibay.school.nz Children in the Home Zone are those whose current residence is within the perimeter of the following area: Kowhai Road (both sides), Channel View Road (both sides), crossing Beach Road (including number 248) to View Road (both sides), north west along the coastline to Montrose Terrace (both sides), west across Beach Road to include both sides of Hastings Road to East Coast Road along the St Johns School boundary (including numbers 89,89,91 and 93 Penzance Road), crossing East Coast Road north of number 421 to include all of Windsor Place, south west along the boundary of Rangitoto College to the Northern Motorway, south east to Sunset Road and north east to include both sides of Sunset Road, east at East Coast Road to include the northern side of East Coast Road and numbers 424-336 and all of Belle Verde Drive on the southern side, and east across East Coast Road to link to Kowhai Road.

- 14 -

Terms Of Use The Ministry of Education tries to ensure that information on schools and school enrolment zones, including maps, is accurate and current, but school zones and other details are subject to change and you should not rely on information in this website alone. To check current boundaries or other details you should contact the school concerned. The Ministry accepts no responsibility for any action taken on the basis of information provided on this website, or for any errors or omissions. (Taken from the Ministry of Education website).

Application for enrolment should be made by 1st September for children turning 5 years of age in the following year. Those accepted will be contacted a few weeks before commencement to arrange times for prior visits. Verification of birth date is required. Application for enrolment during the year may be made on entering the district.

Fees / Fundraising The school fee is set annually by the Board of Trustees. It is in the nature of a voluntary contribution but it must be emphasised that it is impossible to offer the quality of education required by our parents and staff from the funds which the Ministry of Education provides for basic schooling requirements. There are also activity and swimming fees that will be invoiced and you can enquire about them at reception. The PTA co-ordinates additional fundraising for the school. Activities include social events, "athons" etc. Please telephone the school office if you wish to become involved in this area. Apart from fundraising, a prime role for this group is to further build our sense of community.

- 15 -

Grounds The Board of Trustees is responsible for the care and upkeep of the school property and has controlling rights over the use of the grounds outside school hours. Organisations wishing to use the grounds must apply in writing to the Board with specific proposals. For children and individuals, use of the grounds is a privilege and as a safeguard to all, the following requirements must be observed. 1. Use of skateboards is prohibited. 2. Bike riding, roller blading and other activities are permitted by

current school families as long as the children are under direct supervision by adults, and these must be taken home by the adult in school hours. Bicycles are not to be ridden on grass areas.

3. No play near buildings. 4. Damage must be reported to the Board or school staff as soon as possible. Parents of children causing damage to school property or grounds will be held financially responsible. Homework Homework has a place in consolidating and enriching school related activities with the support and encouragement of parents. Please acknowledge your child's efforts. For Junior children Home Reading activities are essential to establish the reading habit. In addition activities involving mathematics may be undertaken. Parents should encourage children to take advantage of using mathematics in everyday situations. For Year 3-6 children a period of 20 minutes daily (Mon-Thurs) is suggested. This would include tasks set by the teacher or a period of reading, learning spelling, practising maths facts and tables, or research on current topic studies. Illness and Injury Every care is taken to minimise the possibility of accidents occurring to students during their time at school. Minor injuries are treated in the Medical Room. Where the injury is considered to be of a more serious nature, parents are immediately informed. In cases of sickness children are taken to the Medical Room and parents informed children must be collected as soon as possible after notification as the school does not have staff or facilities to care for sick or injured children for more than a short period.

- 16 -

Parents are asked to immediately inform the school of changes of emergency contact phone numbers and personnel. Students who have been prescribed medication which must be taken during school hours must bring this, clearly marked with the child's name and dosage requirements, and permission slip for administration completed at the school office. Medication must not be kept in desks or bags. Individual Needs of Students This school aims to provide for the individual needs of students. This can usually be done within the classroom but on occasions can be better achieved by the re-grouping of students or withdrawal of children for individual or group teaching. Staff/student ratios determine the type and duration of programmes offered. However in special cases additional assistance can be sought, through the local area Resource Teacher in Learning and Behaviour. (R.T.L.B). Intermediate School The school accepts students from new entrants to Year 6. Year 7 and Year 8 students in the area generally attend Murrays Bay Intermediate School in Sunrise Avenue. During the third term Year 6 children are given enrolment information from the Intermediate School. Later in the term provision is made for an induction period at the Intermediate School. International Students Our school accepts a limited number of international fee paying students and is a signatory to the Ministry of Education's Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. Refer to our website for further information. www.mairangibay.school.nz

Library We have a bright airy well stocked library which is the envy of other schools. It is a magnet for the children. It is the hub of learning and a haven from the activity of the playground. New books are regularly added and older books replaced. All children are encouraged to use the Library. All classes have regular library periods where children can withdraw books. The Library is also open for borrowing during lunch hours. We also have a Parent Library you are welcome to use. Please assist your child to care for books on loan and return books promptly. There is a charge for replacement of books damaged or lost. Lost Property The School does not take responsibility for the loss of children's articles at school, but it does take appropriate measures to minimize the problem. Most trouble occurs because personal property is not clearly named. It is essential that all articles of clothing, stationery, and personal effects are clearly named. Unclaimed property is supervised through the office and kept nearby. Parents or students are welcome to look through the lost property in search of belongings. All lost property is displayed in the playground for the children and parents prior to the end of each term. At the end of each term unclaimed property is disposed of via the clothing bin.

Lunches Children are expected to bring a cut lunch to school. This is eaten under supervision either outside or indoors. We request that children take home any uneaten foodstuffs, peelings etc. This also enables parents to gauge whether lunch quantity is satisfactory. ezlunch provide a daily online service and are committed to supplying healthy choices. You can view their menu and get more details at ezlunch.co.nz Sausage Sizzle is available on Thursday for $1.50 each. Newsletters to Parents As an Enviroschool we no longer print out newsletters for the whole school. We ask you to log onto our school website (www.mairangibay.school.nz) and register to receive an electronic copy. We do still print a few copies that will be held at the school office and in the library should you wish to read a hard copy. A current copy can also be viewed in the external office notice board and on the school website. In addition, further material, specific to classes or areas of the school is sent home, as appropriate. This includes samples of children’s work, notices, requests etc. From time to time the Board of Trustees sends a newsletter relating to the governance of the school. Parents or organisations who wish to have items of interest included in the newsletter should contact the school office or email [email protected] Office Hours 8.30am -3.30pm schooldays. Our office people are happy to assist you. Out of School Care and Holiday Programmes Mai Place is a registered Out of School Care (OSCAR) provider started by our Board of Trustees and independently run. It provides a before and after school care programme. within the school grounds. The Mai Place team’s goal is to provide a childcare service of the highest standard with a range of stimulating activities and experiences in a safe environment.

Further information can also be found on our website www.mairangibay.school.nz Parent Helpers We appreciate and value the assistance that parents offer to the School. Photos Class photos and team photos are taken each year. Individual student photos are taken every other year (even years).

- 19 -

Public Health Nurse The school has regular contact with the Public Health Nurse and can arrange for her assistance with school related health problems. Sight and hearing tests are carried out each term on new entrant children and children new to the school and arrangements can be made for the testing of older children. A child's state of health is important to teachers and we appreciate information on health conditions being shared with us. school. School Entrances, Parking and Safety The school has a Travel Plan which, with Council’s help, is providing safer crossing sites for students so that parents can further encourage walking to and from school.

We have two entrances, each of which presents potential hazards when children are arriving at, and leaving, school. Parents who are bringing and/or collecting children from school at the Galaxy Drive entrance must observe the following guidelines.

1. Do not get out of your car between the P2 signs. This is the drop off/pick up zone. Drivers who infringe are likely to receive parking tickets.

2. Do not park over driveways, entrances, "yellow lines" or the white lines by the Kia Crossing.

3. Do not "double park". 4. Do not call your child across the road or allow younger children to cross on their

own when traffic is heavy. Cross with your child at a safe place. 5. Do not drive into the school driveway or school ground to bring or collect your

child. 6. Avoid reversing or making "U" turns in Galaxy Drive. 7. Ensure that children leave and enter cars on the passenger's side at the footpath. No parking is available in the school grounds. Please park at the roadside avoiding the no parking areas. Parents using the Agathis Avenue entrance are requested to park well clear of the turning circle. The car park in the school grounds is for staff use and official visitors. Do not use this park to pick up or drop off children, or as a turning area. When turning in Agathis Avenue do so with great caution. The walkway to Mayfair Crescent is recommended to parents as this is a safe place to let off children in the morning and park and wait for children after school. A “walking bus” operates from the Kowhai Road and Maxwelton Drive areas. This is supervised safe walking. Phone our school office for more information. Our road patrol operates every day on Matipo Road from 8.30am until 8.55am and then after school until 3.15pm. Parents who have to drive their children to school are encouraged to reduce congestion by dropping and collecting their children in Matipo Road and avoiding Galaxy Drive. Always choose safety over convenience. People who put our children’s safety at risk can expect infringement notices from the police or council.

- 20 -

School Hours Morning school commences on the bell at 8.55am. Parents are requested to time the departure of children from home so that they do not arrive before 8.30am. No supervision is provided before this and children must not enter the school grounds until this time. Morning interval is at 10.40 - 11am and lunch 12.30 - 1.30pm. School ends at 3.00pm. All children must be clear of the school grounds by 3.15pm except under special circumstances.

School Records It is essential that we have up to date records relating to the custody of students at all times. If there should be any change in custody arrangements, health matters, or emergency contact numbers it is imperative that this information be given to the office immediately. Up to date contact information is vital should an emergency occur. Starting School New entrants may start Monday following their fifth birthday and must attend by the time they turn six. We encourage visits before enrolment. New children are welcomed to the school family at assembly and on day one assigned a buddy to look after them.

- 21 -

Stationery We work with Office Max as our preferred supplier to produce stationery list towards the end of the school year. This list is then posted on our website where you can order directly online or print off to purchase yourself. During the year stationery may be purchased from the office before school each day from 8.30am. Junior children will be given a note indicating book requirements and cost. Parents purchasing stationery independently are requested to supply the type of exercise books and pads selected by the school. Student Council Student representatives from each year 3/4 and year 5/6 class meet the principal to explore ways to further improve our school, fundraise for our World Vision child and identify safety hazards. Student Reports and Parent Interviews Both formal and informal reporting is important in the establishment of good relationships between home and school. Formal reporting is carried out through: (a) Meet the Teacher interviews Term 1. (b) Tracking Books/Learning Albums and "Portfolios" sent home each Term. (c) Written reports sent home followed by parent interviews end of Term 2. (d) Student led conferences Term 3. (e) A full written report at the end of the year. Informal reporting is carried out through day to day school contact in conjunction with parent help, visits etc. This should be of short duration on general matters. For specific matters or matters requiring longer discussion an appointment is required. Sunsafe

The school has a "Sunsafe" policy to:

ensure that children accept responsibility to protect themselves from the sun.

provide shade areas for children and staff.

encourage the use of sunscreen, wearing of hats and protective clothing during outdoor activities. Sun protection awareness is emphasised in school programmes.

Shade areas are available for lunch eating, outdoor teaching and quiet activities. Note: For Terms 1 and 4 children are required to wear a hat during any outdoor activity.

- 22 -

Swimming Swimming and water saftety programmes are provided off site with expert instrutors.

Terms and Holidays School terms are set by the Ministry of Education. They are printed on each school newsletter and appear on our website for your ready reference. Twenty First Century Technologies Students make good use of up to date technologies including interactive whiteboards and computers in the classrooms. The Library has a satellite connection and big screen viewing. Students are taught to harness these technologies through web based research activities and webpage authoring. Excellent protection is provided by an ultra sophisticated internet filtering service and a robust network supporting the school intranet.
