Guidelines for Library Use

SHS Library
Circulation (place where books are checked out and returned)
Located to the right of the door.
If an aide is on duty: All materials are
checked in and out at the desk.
Materials that are to be returned should be placed on the desk.
Mini-Store
The library operates a mini-store with pens, pencils, highlighters, notebooks, report covers, and other materials available for purchase.

Nine computers are available for student use.
Library computers are available for taking AR tests, research, and class assignments.
Writing Lab I
Located in room to the left of the library.

May come with a pass to use if not full with a class

Twenty computers are available for student use.
A teacher must remain in the room whenever students are in it

The printer for the library is located on the counter behind the librarian’s desk
Please use discretion and only print necessary materials (no more than 3 pages unless you have permission from Mrs. Campbell or Ms. Luecker)
Just about everything you need is available on the desktop in the lab or library
Use a usb drive if you need to take documents to/from home
Insert the drive, open the document and “save as” onto the drive. Close the document. When you are ready to take out the drive, follow these steps: right click on the symbol at the bottom of the screen
This box will appear, click on stop Click on your drive
and then OK When this message appears, you can remove the drive.
Many web resources are available on the LMC website. In the library and lab, Internet Explorer opens to this website. From home you will have to go to the district webpage by typing:
www.eagles.k12.mo.us , click on High School and then Library Media Center.

It is always logged in on the computer behind the librarian’s desk.
If the book is checked out you can place a “hold”

Allows you to see how many books we have by a particular author
Type the name in the box in Last Name, First Name order or if you type in just the last name, you can browse to the correct author

Allows you to find a number of books on similar subjects
Fastest way to find books where you are not looking for a particular author or title
Here there are 17 books listed that are on World War II, with additional titles on specific aspects of the war.
Locating the book in the library
Double click on the book to see the details
The call number tells you where to find it.
This book will be found in nonfiction (508s)
Call Number Search
Allows you to find a number of books in a specific dewey number
Fastest way to find books when you know the dewey prefix or call number for that subject
At the SHS Library we use the Dewey Decimal System to organize materials.
On the spine of each book we put the “call number” to help us find books quickly. There are several “prefixes” we use at SHS to tell us more about where to find an item.
F = fiction B = biographies G = gateway award books REF = reference - overnight checkout only! RES = reserved MAG = magazine LOS = lost PRC = professional collection – teachers only! VHS = video – teachers only! EQ = equipment – teachers only!
Note: The different icons in front of the title indicate different formats. A newspaper means that it is a periodical. Click help to see what the other icons mean.

AR – Accelerated Reader
This program tests your knowledge of books you have read.
It is similar to Reading Counts program in use at the Middle school.
The points you earn are based on the percentage of the questions you answer correctly in the quiz.
AR Search
AR searches are good for finding books in your reading range or point value.
You can also narrow the results by choosing a subject or an author.
Warning: We do NOT own a quiz for every book you find using this search.

Status
In, Out, Missing Press Enter if the Book has a Status of Out Date due will be displayed
Remember the prefix “LOS” means the book is lost.

To place a hold If the book you want is checked out, you can ask the
program to “hold” the book for you when it is returned.
• Locate the title of the book in the OPAC and double click to bring up its information
• Click on the Hold/Reserve button
• Type in your library patron number & password (see the librarian if you don’t know it)
• Check to make sure the book you wanted is showing, then click save
• We will send a notice to your English teacher when the book is returned.
Bookbag
Allows you to make a printable list of all the books you are interested in finding
Highlight Title Click Add to Bookbag When finished, click the Bookbag button
From here, you can remove titles, name the bookbag, save the list to a file, or print it
If you can’t find the book you want, you can make a request for the library to purchase the book.
Give as much information as possible so we can locate the book (and/or quiz) you want

Fiction
Fiction (made-up stories)
Fiction books are located in the back portion of the library.
Books are shelved by author’s last name.
Nonfiction (Factual) Books
Nonfiction books are shelved in the center of the library.
The books are organized by Dewey Decimal System.
Numbers range from 000-999.999
Biographies & Collective Biographies A biography is a book written
about a person’s life. B is the call number for
biographies Biographies are located in the
back half of the library Collective biographies, books
written about groups of people, are located at the beginning of the biography section.
B and the dewey number tell you the location of collective biographies.
Periodicals (Magazines, Newspapers & Journals)
Current magazines are shelved on the wall next to the door.
Magazines are stored for five years in the closed stacks.
Back Issues of Magazines
Most magazines are kept for five years. Five magazines are bound every year into volumes
Time, US News, National Geographic, and Newsweek.
Most date back to 1980. (NG dates back to 1971.) Ask the librarian if you need to see a back issue.
Magazine Checkout
Magazine check out is for one day-- they are due back the next day.
Fines for overdue magazines are $.05 per day.
We keep most back issues for 5 years in storage.
The Reference Section The reference section
is located in the back portion of the library
Books are marked REF in the reference section
Almanacs, specialized encyclopedias, dictionaries, etc. are located here.
Vertical Files
The files are located in the reference section.
Vertical files contain clippings, documents and pamphlets on a variety of topics.
They can be checked out overnight.
