General Information Vision/Statement of Faith

The main purpose of our production is to bring glory to God. Throughout this process, we will strive to discuss, instill and live out an understanding of what it means to worship through performing. Our priorities will be worshiping and representing Christ and having a fun and life-giving experience, as we strive toward excellence. This is also an opportunity for us to practice functioning as the Body of Christ, as we work together toward a unified goal. Lastly, as Believers, we will strive to be different from casts and productions who do not know Christ, working together to let Jesus rule (not stress or worldly pressure), as we rehearse and perform for Him.

Parent Expectations

Parent Committee Chair – Mrs. Sam Lee At least one parent or guardian from each family is required to be on two parent committees – one before tech week (sets, costumes etc.) and one during tech week (supervision, meals, ushering, etc.). More information will be available at the required Parent Meeting on Wednesday, September 4th from 5:00-5:30 p.m. (immediately following rehearsal). Rehearsal Breakdown

Below is the “rough draft” breakdown of rehearsals for each week (subject to change). There may be exceptions and rehearsals may run later as we near tech week. The goal is for elementary students to have a consistent schedule (Mondays and Wednesdays 3:15*-4:30) and for MS and HS students to have a semi-regular routine, as they work around athletic and work schedules. *Elementary students will be supervised by Mrs. Shaw in the chapel from 3:00-3:15.

Specific schedules will be sent out every two weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions Does my student have to come to auditions if he/she want to be in the chorus only?

Yes, if your student wants to be in the ensemble, he/she is required to be at the dance audition on Monday until 4:30. What is the extended dance audition?

The extended dance audition (Monday from 4:30-5:30) is for anyone in grades 3-12 interested in auditioning for the tap or ballet numbers in the musical. Note: this will be a selective process. Do elementary schoolers audition?

Elementary students are required to attend the audition on Monday from 3:30-4:30 and are welcome to stay until 5:30 if they would like to audition for the tap or ballet numbers. Any elementary schooler who wants to audition for a solo part must prepare the Munchkin audition song and sign up for an audition time on Tuesday. Do middle schoolers have to audition?

Middle School students are required to attend the audition on Monday from 3:30-4:30 and are welcome to stay until 5:30 if they would like to audition for the tap or ballet numbers. Any middle schooler who wants to audition for a solo part must prepare the Munchkin audition song and sign up for an audition time on Tuesday. What time will auditions be over?

Auditions end at 5:30, but we may run late. What should I wear to auditions?

Wear something within school dress code that you feel comfortable in. On Monday, wear clothes you can move in. If you have ballet point shoes, bring them. You do not need to bring tap shoes. Are auditions open or closed?

Dance auditions are open (other students will be in the room). Solo and lead auditions are closed (just you and the judges will be in the room). Where will auditions take place?

Dance auditions will take place in the chapel. Solo and lead auditions will take place in Mrs. Shaw’s office (students waiting will be supervised in the chapel).

What will auditions be like?

Don’t worry, the “judges” are not “judging you.” We want you to succeed and are rooting for you! For the dance audition, we will spend time learning a short dance combination all together, then you will be given a few minutes to practice on your own. You will then perform the dance combination in small groups for the judges. You will be evaluated on accuracy, expression and attitude. For the solo and lead auditions, you will enter Mrs. Shaw’s office when it is your turn, hand in your audition packet and state your name, grade and desired role. You will then sing the song you’ve prepared with a live accompanist. Lastly, you will read the lines you’ve prepared with one of our judges. What do I need to prepare for my audition?

You will need to fill out the audition form and bring it with you. If you want to be in the ensemble, you do not need to prepare any songs or dances (just come with a positive attitude). If you want a lead role, please prepare the song and sides that correspond with the role you want. You may be asked to read or sing for another role, so it would be wise to look over all the songs and sides. Does my audition need to be memorized? It does not need to be memorized, but if you are wanting a lead role, memorization will help us see your level of commitment/preparedness. What will my student’s time commitment be?

In general, elementary students and those in the ensemble will have rehearsals for 1-2 hours, 2-3 times a week. Leads will have rehearsals for 1-2 hours, 4-5 times a week. This may increase as we near tech week. Can my middle schooler have a lead role?

Middle schoolers are not given lead roles, unless we are not able to fill the cast with high schoolers. If this situation arises, you will be notified. Can my student miss tech week rehearsals?

No. There are no exceptions to this aside from a medical or family emergency. Do I have to be on a parent committee?

Yes. At least one parent from each family must be on a parent committee. Where will musical information be throughout the process?

SYNOPSIS (from Tams-Whitmark) Act I

Dorothy Gale, a young girl living on a Kansas farm with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry, dreams of

escaping her mundane life (“Over The Rainbow“). The family’s mean neighbor, Miss Gulch,

threatens to impound Dorothy’s cherished dog, Toto, so Dorothy and Toto run away. They meet up

with kindly Professor Marvel, who subtly convinces Dorothy to return home. Suddenly a cyclone hits,

and Dorothy and Toto, seeking shelter in the house, are transported to the Land of Oz.

In Oz, Dorothy meets Glinda, the Good Witch of the North (who has an uncanny resemblance to

Aunt Em). Apparently, Dorothy’s house has landed upon – and fatally stricken – the Wicked Witch of

the East. The Munchkins, now freed from the Wicked Witch of the East, celebrate and hail Dorothy

as their new heroine (“Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead/Munchkin Musical Sequence”). The

celebration is interrupted as the Wicked Witch of the West suddenly appears, seeking vengeance.

Unable to reclaim her sister’s shoes, which are now on Dorothy’s feet, the Witch vows to return and

disappears in a cloud of smoke. Dorothy, seeking a way back home to Kansas, sets off to see the

Wizard of Oz (“Follow the Yellow Brick Road”).

Along the way, Dorothy meets three new friends, each of whom lacks a crucial characteristic: The

Scarecrow (“If I Only Had A Brain”) The Tinman (“If I Only Had A Heart”) and the Lion (“If I Only Had

The Nerve”). Together, the four new companions make their way towards Oz (“We’re Off To See

The Wizard”). The Witch attempts to sedate the travelers with a poisonous field of poppies, but

Glinda reverses the spell with healing snowflakes (“Poppies/Optimistic Voices”).

Act II

The travelers, arriving at the Emerald City, are delayed by a stubborn Gatekeeper, but Dorothy’s

tears convince him to relent and let them in (“Merry Old Land Of Oz”). As the group awaits its

audience with the Wizard, the Lion boasts he is “King Of The Forest.” Finally, they meet the

imposing and irritable Wizard, who demands the broomstick of the Wicked Witch of the West.

The four friends travel deep into the haunted forest. Suddenly, they encounter jitterbugs, who make

them [tap] dance until they collapse from exhaustion (“Jitterbug”). The Wicked Witch’s flying

monkeys swoop down, capturing Dorothy and Toto. At the castle, the Witch vows to take Dorothy’s

life. Meanwhile, the Lion, Scarecrow, and Tinman infiltrate the castle disguised as Winkie guards. The

foursome and Toto are reunited, but the Wicked Witch interferes, threatening the Scarecrow with

fire. Dorothy, dousing the flames with a bucket of water, accidentally strikes the Witch, who smolders

and melts into nothing (“Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead – Reprise”). The four friends, triumphant,

take the Witch’s broom back to the Wizard.

The Wizard remains imperious and imposing, but Toto pulls aside a curtain to reveal a meek and

ordinary man speaking into a microphone. The Wizard, revealed to be a “humbug,” nonetheless

grants each traveler’s request, giving the Scarecrow, the Tinman, and the Lion each a token of his

newly-acquired ability. The Wizard offers to take Dorothy back to Kansas in his hot-air balloon, but

the balloon accidentally takes off, and Dorothy is left alone and crestfallen. Glinda appears and

explains that Dorothy has always had the power to return home. All she has to do is close her eyes,

tap her heels together three times, and repeat to herself, “There’s no place like home.”

Back in Kansas, Dorothy awakens, confused, with a bump on her head. Reunited with all her loved

ones, and relieved to learn the storm has left Miss Gulch incapacitated by a broken leg, Dorothy

shares the tale of her miraculous journey, celebrating the joy and healing power of home.

Scheduling Conflicts
