Apparel1. 100% cotton will give the best results for the DTG process. Please try to use as high a cotton ratio as possible on the apparel. 60%-100% polyester will NOT work.2. Certain apparel colors will produce the best results. Please consult with a designer or sales rep if you need guidance.3. When we print on white apparel, we do not use pretreatment. We can apply pretreatment to give a better result but will need to charge as a dark print.4. Pretreatment on white apparel is tricky and can result a in a yellowish pretreatment stain. We can experi-ment on the apparel to see if we nd the right mixture to give the best results But due the 1000s of dierent fabric for apparel, it ishard to have perfect chemical baseline to give us the same results everytime. Depend-ing on the job quantity, there might not be enough apparel to do this experiment. Supply 5-10% extra product for such testing if applicable. 5. Certain brands of apparel work better than other brands. Ring spun cotton seems to have consistently better results.. Please contact us if you need help choosing the right brand.6. Garments with nishes - such as stain resistant aprons - are not digitally printable.7. To best preserve the colors in your design, we recommend washing the garments inside out in cold water.8. The pre-treatment on dark shirts may leave a slight discoloration around the printed image area. This is a natural result of the process and disappears with the rst wash. All DTG prints should be washed prior to being worn.

Production1. Please allow for a 3-5% loss rate on DTG orders. We try to stay within the industry standard of 2%, but due to the availability of thousands of dierent apparel fabric styles, it is dicult to have a perfect chemical baseline to give us the same results everytime. PLEASE provide extra pieces and let us know what sizes those are so we can make adjustments. 2. Please keep in mind that your order will be on hold and will not be put on the production schedule until you have approved the attached artwork proof. It is critical that you approve this artwork proof within 24 hours to avoid delays on your order. Your approval veries your satisfaction with the artwork and proof. After your approval please allow 3 to 5 business days to complete your order.3. We recommend a sample run with the same color and type of apparel before you run full production. Changing the color and apparel after the sample will result in a dierent nished product.

FAQWhat is needed to start on a job?The rst step is to ll out a DTG PO using the form found here: http://j6designs.com/DTG_PO.pdfFor Brokers: Just like screen printing orders, we need the apparel and the artwork approval at our location before the job can be started. Like the rest of our services it will be keyed in using WheresMyJob.com so you can conveniently track the production status through your online account.

How does DTG compare to screen printing? This is the rst question we get from most brokers. It’s a dicult question to answer without getting too technical, but in simple terms, it is dierent and rarely produces the same results. The biggest dierence is the print colors available. Unlike screen printing where you are highly limited with the number of printable colors, DTG allows you to print with an unlimited number of colors and tones. However, the DTG print

Page 3: INFORMATION AND DISCLAIMERS FOR DTG PRINTING …Brokers).pdf · DTG print colors are determined within the printer rather than mixed by hand in screen printing. The amount of di˚erence

process has a unique eect that makes some colors come out looking dierent than if you screen printed them. Specically, the colors in a DTG print look a little duller and less vibrant. Color matching between screen printing and DTG printing is not possible. DTG print colors are determined within the printer rather than mixed by hand in screen printing. The amount of dierence in output really depends on the artwork being printed. The closest comparison we can make between DTG and screen printing is that DTG printing is very close to water based screen printing. In theory, DTG is a form of water base printing since it uses water base inks to print on the shirt giving a soft blended look to it.

The print looks dierent on my screen than my nal results, why?The main reason for this dierence is that monitors display colors (RGB) are produced by the projection of light (additive colors), whereas printed colors (CMYK) are produced using ink to subtract from the light that is being reected o of surface (subtractive colors). We can not guarantee the same result between your monitor and digital print. The DTG process starts by getting the le from the broker (or creating the artwork for retail customer) and pressing print. Like any other digital print process, dierent printers will produce dierent results. We can make some adjustments to improve the print using dierent amounts of pretrea-ment. However these minor adjustments will not eect the shading or certain qualities within the artwork. If 100% exact monitor results are required, DTG may not be the best method for you. We can work to get it closer to the monitor image but additional costs for artwork adjustment time plus several sample fees will be required.

What is the the DTG (Pre-Treatment) ring and how does eect my job?For those that use our embroidery service, you are familiar with the ring that is left on the garment due to the pressure of the hoop during production. Similarly, the DTG printing process can leave a pretreatment ring around printed images on colored garments. This is caused by the pretreatment chemical used to allow the printing of white ink. Every shirt reacts dierently and we do our best to stabilize the amount pre-treatment used. However, due to the chemical reaction between the garment and the pretreatment spray, dierent results will be produced on dierent shirt colors. We try to nd the perfect balance between having very little pretreatment show and the having a high quality print on your shirt. BUT If we have to choose , our printers will choose the high quality print and have more pretreatment show if needed. Please advise your customers that most pre-treatment comes out on the rst wash. Using the DTG service requires that you accept a disclaimer regarding the possible pretreatment ring.

How much does apparel fabric impact the quality of Direct to Garment Print?A lot, a lot a lot. Garment selection, both brand and construction, is a critical step in producing an ideal nished product. 100% Ring spun cotton will always have a superior print compared to normal cotton shirts. The garment needs to have a tight weave and a smooth surface. Blended fabrics can be printed, but the higher cotton content the better your nished print result. The closer you get to a 50/50 blend, the more you will lose brightness and wash-ability of the printed image. The inks are made to only stick to the cotton material not polyester. 60-100% polyester garments are not printable.

How much does apparel COLOR impact the quality of Direct to Garment Print?A lot a lot a lot. Garment color and print color are also contributing factors to the nal print quality. There are several colors of apparel that will negatively impact the print quality. Please consult with a customer service representative if you need a second opinion on shirt colors. Red fabric produces the most printing compli-cations. Red shirts will cause the print to look a bit faded do to the pigment within the apparel. Red prints will also look a bit faded as the magenta ink used in producing the color is more translucent than other colors ink colors. This translucence causes the white base ink to be visible through the red layer. Lighter

Page 4: INFORMATION AND DISCLAIMERS FOR DTG PRINTING …Brokers).pdf · DTG print colors are determined within the printer rather than mixed by hand in screen printing. The amount of di˚erence

colored fabric (including white if pretreatment is needed) will also have a visible stain caused by the chemi-cal used to pretreat the garment to allow a white base ink to be applied before the colored inks are added to complete the image.

How much longer does a DTG print last compared to Screen printing? In theory, the DTG print should last as long as a water base print, but we don’t have a denitive answer as of now. We are currently testing DTG prints for durability by washing them to see if any ink washes out in the process.

When should I use DTG instead of screen printing? For Brokers:You can choose DTG for any quantity of shirts, but there is a certain point when screen printing becomes a lot more cost eective. First, Our minimum for screen printing is 24 pieces, anything below is billed at 24 pieces, so DTG will most likely be the better choice. It’s best to compare both price lists and see what best suites your needs for a given order. DTG can work for an order over 24 pieces, but it just depends on the artwork and the eect you are trying to achieve. If the artwork needs to be printed in CMYK, or will need to be reduced to "make it work", DTG might be best. If your customer has no exibility on the artwork, DTG might be your only choice. We highly recommend you place a 1 piece order on a bigger job so you can see the results prior to running the full order. Please remember DTG results are dierent than screen printing.

SynopsisBrother is the Tajima and M&R of the DTG world. Although Brother has been in the DTG business for eight years, DTG remains a labor intensive process that requires a lot of preproduction time, maintenance, and setup to get a quality print. Just to put things in perspective, even jobs with only one piece require the attention of at least 2-3 people and several internal departments before it is complete and ready for delivery. There are many fabric choices and an innite amount of artwork styles that combine to produce many results. Every job is part of a learning process with DTG. RESULTS CAN VARY. Despite this, there are great benets to DTG and we rmly believe it is here to stay. DTG oers great advantages; the trick is recognizing when and where DTG is appropriate.
