Your Assignment

• In groups of 3 or 4 (bell 6) or 2 (bell 7), students will conduct research on an information and communication technology.

• Students will be required to create a mini lesson about their topic to present to the class.

Requirements

• Lesson title and objective(s)

• Information about the topic

• Lecture, PowerPoint, Prezi, skit, video, etc.

• Topic practice

• Group activity, worksheet, game, etc.

• Assessment

• Quiz, discussion, exit ticket, etc.

Your Lesson Should Include…

• A definition of the technology

• Examples of the technology

•When/where/who invented or innovated the technology

• How the technology is used/works

• How the technology impacts society

•Why this technology is important for gathering, processing, or sharing information and ideas.

Time Frame

•Create the lesson – 11/20 - 11/24

• Teach the lesson – 11/25 and 11/26

• Lessons should not exceed 20 minutes

The Unit 7 Project Is…

• Students, working in groups of 3 or 4, will use their own devices or a camera from Mrs. Beamer (only 2 available) to create an effective Public Service Announcement about the topic of their choice (with teacher approval).

• Students will complete their assignment packet as they work through their project (I will explain later).

Public Service Announcements

• A.k.a. – P.S.A.

• PSAs are great for introducing current issues to the students of VBMS

• Definition:

• “Announcements that inform the public about safety and health information, community services, or public affairs. Produced and programmed much like commercials, but usually not produced for profit.”• PBS.org

Creating Effective PSAs

1.Brainstorm a list of topics that are important to you.

2.Choose one topic and conduct research about that topic.A. Did you find a shocking statistic, study, or data? What was surprising

about it?

B. Did you know some of the ‘shocking’ or ‘powerful’ findings before? How did it differ from what you knew or believed?

C. What did you learn about what causes the topic or issue you’re addressing in your PSA?

D. What could be a solution to the problem and how can you communicate this in the PSA? How can people change their behaviors?

3.Figure out who your target audience is – the group of people you want to learn from this PSA.

4.Plan out your PSA.A. Create a storyboard (Explain later)

5.Film your PSA. You will use a camera to film scenes for your PSA.

6.Edit your PSA. You will use Movie Maker to edit your scenes together to create your final PSA (Explain later).

7.Show your PSA. You will present your PSA to the class. A few of the group PSAs will be chosen to be shown on the morning announcements.

Topics• Working in groups of 3 or 4, students will brainstorm possible

PSA topics.

• Write them in your EDJ

• The topics must be appropriate for school (i.e. – avoid sensitive subjects).

• Groups will have 10 minutes to brainstorm.

• If time allows – student groups will present their ideas and choose ONE.

• ALL GROUPS MUST HAVE A DIFFERENT TOPIC!

Proposal• Each student must complete their own proposal – but you can

• 5 facts with sources cited – ALL MEMBERS MUST HAVE DIFFERENT FACTS

• Filming locations • These locations will have to be approved by administration and then Mrs.

Beamer

• You CAN film at home, around town, etc. on your own time

Script

• Student groups must work together to create a script

• Groups produce ONE script. You must initial the parts that you contributed.

• The script will help members to stay focused during filming

• Must follow the split column format

Person #1 is lying across a bed and is talking on the phone. Then person #1 receives a text message.

Narrator – “We were best friends, and we used to tell each other everything”

Close up on the text message. Narrator – “Then things changed when he came into the picture.”

Person #1 is sitting on the stairs talking on the phone, camera is angled toward the phone.

Narrator – “At first she was happy, and told me about everything.”

Person #1 is lying down on the stairs, the phone rings, she looks at the phone, doesn’t answer it, and tosses it away. Camera is angled downward on her.

Narrator – “But then she stopped calling. When I tried to call her, she didn’t pick up.”

Storyboard

• Storyboards are used to show the client what will happen in the PSA

• Each student must draw their own storyboard – but you may all work together

• You don’t have to draw elaborate scenes, just draw enough so your client (Mrs. Beamer) can tell what’s going on

Treatment

• This serves as an overview of the film

• 5 paragraph format (Paragraph = 3-5 sentences)

• Introduction

• Pre-production

• Production

• Post production

• Conclusion

Introduction Paragraph

• Introduce the topic of your PSA

• Talk about who is doing what in your group

• Discuss your main characters

• Explain why you chose your topic

• This paragraph is introducing what you will write about in the paragraphs to come

Pre-Production

• You can discuss anything you are doing BEFORE you film

• Discuss the components of pre-production

• Talk about the props you will need

• Explain each character

• Discuss what filming equipment you will use

Production

• You can discuss anything being done DURING filming

•Where you are going to film

•What camera angles you want to use

• How long your scenes are

• If you will need to change into different clothing (school appropriate)

Post-Production

• You can discuss anything you are doing AFTER filming

• Discuss what transitions you will use

• Talk about any text you plan on inserting

• Discuss any voiceovers you will insert (must bring your own computer microphone)

• Talk about what you will have the title and credits say

Conclusion

•Wrap up any loose ends

• Discuss how you will present it

• Explain if you are trying to get your PSA on the morning announcements or not

• Talk about your feeling towards the project

• Anything that will help conclude your treatment (a.k.a. – essay)

Production

• DURING filming

• Film scenes for your PSA

• Record narration track into camera or dub it in after the fact

• DO NOT forget your target audience!!

• Mrs. Beamer can take away your filming privileges at anytime if you are abusing them– you will have to use only pictures (…zzz)

Post-Production

• Remember to think about Copyright laws

• Convert it to a movie file
