When installed and working properly it can give you and your family valuable extra time to escape from a fire in your home. A smoke alarm will not prevent fires. The green light on the smoke alarm indicates the unit is receiving mains power. Do not tamper with the smoke alarm as this may result in electric shock or the alarm not working. A rechargeable battery backup that cannot be changed is built into your smoke alarm. This battery does not need replacing. WARNING: SMOKE ALARMS ARE POWERED BY 240 VOLTS AND MUST NOT BE TAMPERED WITH. Testing and maintaining your smoke alarm Regularly check the green light is on as it shows that the power is connected. Regular testing will ensure that your smoke alarm operates in a fire. Test your smoke alarm every month by pressing the test button — use a broom handle if you cannot reach. Press the test button until the smoke alarm starts to ‘beep - beep - beep…’ . This action simulates the effect of smoke during a real fire and is the best way to ensure the smoke alarm is operating correctly. The smoke alarm will automatically reset once the test button is released after testing. The Department of Housing will test all smoke alarms annually. Ensure that it is kept clean and that excess dust does not build up — vacuum if necessary. Any insects or cobwebs in the vicinity should be promptly removed — apply surface spray to the ceiling around the smoke alarm. Do not cover up or paint your smoke alarm. Other than the cleaning described above, no other servicing of this product is required. Repairs, when needed, must be coordinated by the Department of Housing. WARNING: DO NOT TEST SMOKE ALARMS WITH A NAKED FLAME OR SMOKE AS THIS MAY SET IT ON FIRE OR STOP IT FROM WORKING. THE DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING MAY CHARGE TENANTS FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED AS A RESULT OF NOT FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS. General Remember that a smoke alarm will not prevent fires. It is recommended that you obtain relevant contents insurance in case a fire occurs in your home. False and nuisance alarms may occur from cooking, dust, etc. These can be silenced by fanning the smoke alarm with a newspaper or by pushing the “hush” button if fitted. If a smoke alarm still cannot be silenced after seeking assistance from relatives, friends or neighbours then contact Housing Direct on 1300 137 677 or your local Department of Housing office.
