Pharmacy Teaching and Education in India". It has come a long way in creating better

intercommunication and promotion of excellence in pharmacy education. Through its

tailor-made mission and objectives, the association has provided a single platform in

bringing together teachers of pharmacy education from all over the country. This has

helped in the achievement of excellent standards and to develop new technological

methods in pharmacy education through the exchange of views amongst the teaching

members. The emergent world today, with unbelievable sophistication under its belt,

demands for technically sound and highly knowledgeable pharmacists. The

contribution of a teacher is thereby quite de-manding. A Teacher apart from being an

educator also contributes to science as a researcher, helps in business development

as a consultant to pharmaceutical industry and also creates social awareness as a

community pharmacist.

The APTI Punjab state branch came into

existence in December 2014 under the

aegis of APTI, with a mandate to prosper

Pharmaceutical education in Punjab

through spreading awareness about the

current and prospective scenario in

different fields of Pharmaceutical

Sciences. Since its inception under the

dynamic leadership of Prof. R K Goel, the association has successfully organized and

supported three annual national conventions, six national seminars on diverse fields

across different regions with the active participation and coordination of all pharmacy

in-stitutions of Punjab. It has also facilitated and supported lectures from

representative of Alberta College of Pharmacists Council across Punjab. The

association has the privilege of hosting 69th Indian Pharmaceutical Congress, the

mega event in Pharmaceutical Sciences in India, in 2017 as co-host.

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Drug Research

The department was established in 1993 with an envision to develop into a centre of

excellence for drug research and for training personnel at graduate, post-graduate and

doctoral levels. It has a rare distinction of being granted financial assistance under the

coveted FIST scheme of DST as well as SAP-I (2009-14) and SAP-II (2015-20) scheme

of UGC in recognition of its excellent performance in academic and research areas. The

major thrust areas of research are novel drug delivery systems, Near chemistry of

Epilepsy, molecular and biochemical pharmacology of memory and cardiovascular

diseases, 3D-QSAR, design and synthesis of novel drug molecules, herbal drug

stability and impurity characterization, and phytochemical investigations on anti-

anxiety and anti-diabetic drugs. It hosted 28th Conference of Indian Pharmacology

Society in 1995, an International Conference on Pathophysiology and Drug Therapy of

Cardiovascular Dis-orders in 2001, National Conference on Innovations in Drug

Discovery and Research in 2009, a one day UGC-UKIERI international seminar on

nanotherapeutics and crystal engineering in 2016, a hands-on one week training

workshop on chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques in 2016, and several

other one day seminars. Apart from fetching research grants of worth several million

rupees from different agencies, the department has a rare distinction of being granted

three research projects to Prof. R. K. Goel by DST and RFBR, Moscow under the Indo-

Russian collaboration scheme, and successfully completing a consultancy project

sanctioned to Dr. A. K. Tiwary by Kemin Industries Inc., Des Moines, Iowa, USA. The

department maintains a close contact with leading pharmaceutical companies for

training and placement of its students. The active research aptitude is evident by four

patents and approximately 720 publications in journals of international repute.

Department is celebrating its silver jubilee in this year and have been rated with All

India Rank “16” in recent National Institution Ranking Framework (NIRF) of MHRD,

India.



A s f o r t i fi e d by h i g h l y p ro fi t a b l e blockbuster business for decades the pharmaceutical industry’s is now facing significant productivity challenges – specifically how to efficiently generate enough pipeline-stage products to replace fading successful molecules, and comply the demand of post genomic era. As a result, the pharmaceutical industry is on the brink of significant change, requiring the reinvention of traditional discovery processes and the redefinition of the information technologies required to support these processes.

The most attractive new drugs, as measured by health benefits and stockholder returns, tend to be new molecular entities possessing novel modes of action rather than so called ‘me-too’ or ‘lifecycle’ drugs. Since these products are based on groundbreaking science, they significantly raise the level of risk of bringing them to market. Pharmaceutical discovery is, in fact, all about r isk and uncer ta in ty, and increasingly, how to minimize those factors while efficiently getting products to market and providing value to stockholders and healthcare consumers.

The changing trends form “me too” to “ fi r s t i n c l a s s d r u g s ” d e m a n d s i d e n t i fi c a t i o n o f n e w t a r g e t s . Traditionally, the crucial impasse in the industry’s search for new drug targets was the availability of biological data: Target discovery could inch forward only as fast as new genes and proteins were uncovered in the laboratory. Information accumulated slowly and, because it was

generated by research into specific cellular processes such as signaling pathways, data interpretation was a relatively straightforward task.

But in the postgenomic era, tradition has been turned on its head. Today’s pharmaceutical world is awash with data, from huge and growing gene sequence archives—including the completed first draft of the human genome—and from m u s h ro o m i n g p ro t e i n s e q u e n c e repositories amassed through the conveyor-belt techniques of proteomics. These data have not been generated through the investigation of specific biological problems, but by using high-throughput, broad-spectrum methods that trawl cells indiscriminately for their genetic and molecular components.

In this new era of drug discovery, the critical impasse is no longer data

generation, but data interpretation.

“All serious players in the drug discovery competition are being

compelled by market necessity to devote substantial resources to in silico

drug discovery programs. Success in the race to discover targets and new

leads in the postgenomic world will go with the greatest ability to mine the value locked in the burgeoning data

archives.

Leveraging big data for search of novel targets and leads to such targets has

been proven to reduce the attrition rate of new drug discovery.”

A blend of resource persons from academia and Drug discovery industry will enlighten the delegates for attempting drug discovery even in academic setting. Further this will be a platform for initiating collaboration among drug discovery scientists of industry and academia.

Guideline for abstract submission

1. Abstracts must be submitted online to [email protected]

2. Authors's details: include full mailing address, office hours phone number, email address and fax number of presenting author, as well as affiliation details of all co-authors. By submitting the abstract, you confirm consent of all co-authors to provide their data.

3. All abstracts must be submitted and presented in English. Please use Times new roman font and have your abstract proofread.

4. Abstracts should contain new and original information, not published elsewhere.

5. They should be as informative as possible:

(a) state specific object of study (c) summarise results obtained

(b) state method used if pertinent (d) state conclusions reached

6. They should be structured and with the subheadings Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusion.

7. All abbreviations used must be defined the first time they appear.

8. Avoid complex mathematical formulae. Try to avoid symbols: e.g. use IFN-beta instead of IFN-ß; 10^2 instead of 10²; x >= 2 instead of x≥2.

9. Abstract text must not exceed 250 words; heading maximum of 25 words.

The city of Patiala is renowned as a famous tourist destination located in the state of Punjab, India.
