Dear Participant,

Xaghra Scout Group is looking forward to having you on board for our project E-S.C.OUT! We have been working on this project since last summer and we are thus more than eager to see this project become a success! Following is the information pack, happily compiled for you to make your arrival and stay in Gozo simpler. In it you can find :

• Information about E-S.C.OUT and the organisations which are taking part• Personal Equipment List• Camp Program & Food Menu• and many more :)

1.0 Welcome On board!

E-S.C.OUT is an 8-day camp which makes part of Action 1.1 of the Youth in Action pro-gramme. Between the 17th and 24th of August, 22 youths from Malta, Ireland, Turkey and Portugal will gather in a valley in Gozo, Malta and participate in a camp filled with games, culture and informal education. The name given to the project is an acronym for European-Sports.Culture.OUTdoors; a phrase which collects within it the total feel of this European camp. Its objective is to create an awareness amongst the partipants of our shared identity without forgetting the diversity amongst us all. This will be achieved through the planned activities which emphasise the importance that sports and culture should hold in our lives, examples of which are games, informal debates, international dishes and games, and vol-untary work. The setting of this camp will surely add to these objectives as the participants will get to experience a week of difference. It is the organisers’ wish that this project will truly achieve ‘Unity in Diversity’! Any questions? Please ask away so on [email protected]

2.0 Partner Organisations

Founded in 1908, The Scout Association of Malta has always maintained a high and respectable scouting tradition. Its lead-ers and members are committed to further the ideals of Scout-ing in line with those as traditionally established by the Found-er, Lord Baden Powell and as further developed by the World Organisation of the Scout Movement. The Association is a for-ward looking organisation that enjoys great respect both lo-cally and internationally.

The Scout Association of Malta is a member of the World Or-ganisation of the Scout Movement as well as a member of the European Scout Region.

In 2008 the Association celebrated its centenary, following the centenary celebrations of the World Movement a year before.

Scouting in general gives much importance to personal development promoted through the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual well-being of the individual. It helps those participating to achieve their full potential in life. Scouts learn by working in teams, by holding responsability in their group and thinking for themselves and by also taking acceptable risks.

2.1 About the Scout Association of Malta

Scouting Ireland

Page 5: InfoPack v1.00

Xaghra Scout Group makes part of the Scout Associa-tion of Malta within the wider and international Scout-ing Community. The group works within the local level and holds within it more than 75 members, the majority of whom are active youths and children. The group it-self is quite new to the Scouting community and as with our contemporaries we are driven by a determination to succeed in creating a better world with better individu-als. The energetic youths in our group are responsible for managing the Troop, Pack and Colony which between them hold more than 50 children between the ages of 4 and 11. They voluntarily contribute much of their time for the organisation of the whole group, from planning and administering meetings, organising cultural outings and

various fundraisers such as parties, dinners and BBQs.

Although the present group opened its doors in 2008, this is not the first attempt of a ‘Xaghra Scout Group’. The group was first launched in 1933 but had to close its doors because of the Sec-ond World War. It was reopened in 1952 and the group was even represented at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The group had to once again close after some years. Another attempt at reo-pening the group occured in 1974 but once again it had to close due to a lack of leaders.

It is hence our greatest wish that this reattempt at having a Xaghra Scout Group will last. The present group is filled with ambition and hope that, all together, we can create a group which lasts the trials of time!

2.2 About Xaghra Scout Group

We do have some information about your association or group but it would be even more interest-ing if you could provide us with some more :)

It would be great if you could prepare a powerpoint presentation, videos or photos (use your im-agination :) ) about your country and your association and group to show us during the interna-tional night and other evenings. We will be preparing something about our group as well! By this way we can all get to know each others’ associations better.

Moreover, any participant can bring anything related to scouting like scarves, badges, T-Shirts, woggles and other items to show to other participants, or trade :) Happy scouting-related trading!

2.3 What about your association & group?

Page 6: InfoPack v1.00

Mark is the legal representative for E-S.C.OUT and also our Finance Manager, He’s ambitious in his career, working and studying, but still he finds time to be an active Scouter and a Troop Leader in our Group

2.4 Meet the Coordination Committee

Freshly graduated in European Studies with Archaeology, and on to read a Masters in Diplomatic Studies, our project manager Ms. Daniela, is still unsure what she’s to do with her life… She is certain though that the ideal job would be in foreign affairs; how to get such a job is beyond her though! She wanted to organize E-S.C.OUT in order to bring the fun of youth exchanges to Gozo. This is her first project though, so excuse her if something does not go according to plan!

Josmar is Daniela’s and Mark’s assistant for the project, and together with the rest of the CC is making E-S.C.OUT happen. If it wasn’t for him this Info Pack would have been delayed by a week or two!! Together they had a dream, and E-S.C.OUT made it happen. He’s also the Cub Scout Leader in our group with big dreams, which we’re sure he’ll turn into reality.

Mattia is the one in charge of Area Logistics. He’s the one making sure our campsite and its facilities are in their best condition, ready to be our home soon!

Loraine is the leader behind the Activities we’re doing at E-S.C.OUT. She’s this busy energetic girl you see rushing about, with a good heart she makes sure everyone around her is having fun!

Page 7: InfoPack v1.00

Kim is the one in charge of Transport. She’s the one arrang-ing all your bus rides and ferry trips to the campsite and back during your stay in Malta and Gozo. Apart from that, she’s an active scout and is always there to lend a helping hand, she’s loud and cheerful, great company!

Julie is the leader behind the Food. She’s the one who, with help from Xaghra Scout Group’s Council, is finding ways and means of filling up everyone’s stomach and satisfying all your taste buds during the project. We have no doubt that you’ll be fully satisfied with what you eat!

Debz is our Public Relations Officer; she’s the one telling the nation about E-S.C.OUT! Her hand at writing enables her to write articles for local newspapers and also for our group’s website. Being the Beaver Scout Leader in our group, she’s a very active scout as well!

Sabrina is our co-ordination committee secretary! She makes sure anything said is written down for future reference, and with her help nothing gets forgotten. She’ll be starting Uni-versity next Fall, with no doubts being an excellent student!

The Co-ordination Committee along with other leaders from Xaghra Scout Group is working together and doing their ut-

most to make E-S.C.OUT a success!

Antoine is the one making sure we get those E-S.C.OUT T-shirts and badges printed and ready! He’s got a passion for anything orange and has great designing skills! He’s got a so-lution for anything and is always there to help, giving 100% of him to anything scoutly.

4.1 The Venue

Gozo, which in Maltese is called Għawdex (pronounced: Awdesh) has an area of 67 square kms. With a coastline of 43 km, it is the second largest island of the Maltese Archipelago. Gozo lies about 5kmintheNorthWestofMaltaandthedistancebetweenĊirkewwainMaltaandMgarrHarbourin Gozo, involves a 25 minute ferry crossing. It therefore enjoys warm summers and mild winters and this makes it the ideal holiday destination at any time of the year.Gozo is much greener than Malta and offers captivating views from all angles, it has an air of tran-quility and peacefulness about it as it holds onto its deep roots and traditions. Gozo is loved by all, foreigners who visit once and cannot stay away, even Maltese people who choose Gozo as a weekend getaway, to breathe its tranquil air and forget their troubles. Some call it Malta’s secret gem, an unspoilt paradise. And what if you’re a Scout on Gozo? Then that is simply wonderful, because it means we get to hike across the island in a day, exploring its most spectacular views and simply being at one with nature, venturing in countryside areas unknown to the general public.

Our island - Gozo

Page 13: InfoPack v1.00

Ix-Xaghra (pronounced: shara) is built on a hill to the central north-east of the island of Gozo. It lies just under four kilometres from Rabat, the town of the island, and is aptly described as the village of the goddess and the Madonna. Ix - Xaghra was one of the earliest inhabited areas of Gozo. Xaghra enjoys very rich historical sites, undoubtedly the most famous are the Ggantija Temples which are one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. They date back to 3600 – 3200 B.C., which makes them older than the Pyramids of Egypt and the oldest known human structure in the world.

Apart from this, Xaghra also has a number of grottoes, such as Calypso Cave which plays a role in Greek mythology, and which is located less than five minutes away from the campsite.

Xaghra is also our hometown, the place where the Xaghra Scouts were born, it is the place chosen for E-S.C.OUT, so for a week, it can be your home away from home, where you can experience is-land life.

Our Village - Xagħra

This beach is without doubt the best on the island. Unlike others, its sand is red, the water is lovely and clear, and although you may find that on part of it there are quite a few pebbles and what looks like a few sharp rocks, these are in fact the last remains of a ruin.

Yes, we have chosen the most beautiful beach in Gozo to hold our project. You will be living liter-ally one minute away (about 50m) from the clear blue sea.

The Beach - Ramla Bay

Page 14: InfoPack v1.00

The campsite will consist of various sleeping tents, 10-man Ridge Tents where everyone will be assigned a place to sleep, creating an international bedroom in each tent. Then one can find the great Marquee, the dining shelter, the tent which everyone will fall in love with, where we’ll spend most of our time at the campsite. There will also be the Kitchen Tent and a Camp Store. One mustn’t forget of course the showers and toilets available on site.

One can find a diagram of the campsite below and photos showing some of the tents. The photo in the middle right is the one showing the inside of the ridge (sleeping) tents.
