SAN MARTIN DE TOR, the centre of the municipal area of the same name, is home to both the Museum Ladin and the Micurà de Rü Institute of Ladin Culture – two significant institutions which foster and cultivate the Ladin language and customs, turning the village into the undisputed cultural centre of the Badia valley. Small and yet wow, notably welcoming Picolin is just around the corner. Lungiarü is an unspoiled mountain hamlet at the heart of the Dolomites, framed by the imposing Puez-Odle and Sasso Putia massifs. At the foot of the latter, laid out between lush meadows and forests, lies Antermoia – the ideal starting point for a large number of hikes.

DEAR GUESTS WELCOME TO SAN VIGILIO DOLOMITES& SAN MARTIN DE TOR!

Enjoy your stay in the Badia valley. We promise you will never forget it!Your San Vigilio and San Martin de Tor Tourist Office teams

The two picturesque municipalities Marebbe and San Martin de Tor are cosily nestled at the heart of the world-famous, awe-inspiring Dolomi-tes. With only 3000 inhabitants, over the years Marebbe has success-fully retained its quaint look and character. SAN VIGILIO is both the administrative centre of the Marebbe municipal area and a key destination for tourism and culture. The hamlets Pieve di Marebbe, Rina and Longega offer a fascinating glimpse of the charming historic Ladin communities. With the remarkable Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park and the popular Kronplatz ski resort on the village's doorstep, Marebbe is an attractive destination for summer sports.

Summer Info | San Vigilio Dolomites | San Martin de Tor | 5

A 1 OUR SPECIAL SUGGESTION: TRU DLES LIONDES

A highlight not to be missed: This instructive trail offers fascina-ting insights into the legendary Fanes realm. It begins at the Aqua Bad Cortina Oasis Hotel on Strada Fanes. And for the little ones, at the Tourist office we have prepared a fun quiz to accompany the walk!

crossed the woods, walk on past Val to the Torpëi farmhouse. Take a left along the paved road all the way back to the village, leading to Hotel Monte Paraccia. This walk is also worthwhile the other way round.

P TRES LA VAL: theme walkThe Tres la Val trail (Ladin for "along the valley") starts in Mantena and leads all the way to Pederü along the bottom of the valley, past San Vigilio, Ciamaor, Lé dla Creda, Fodara Masaronn and Tamersc. The total distance is about 14 km, but you are free to start off or stop anywhere along the route.

Q TRU DAL'EGA: theme walk (H: 3 h)From the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park House, this trail will take you to where the village stream meets the Aqua Bad Cortina Hotel and on towards Pederü passing through Ciamaor. Running along the stream, it leads to the forty springs of Les Fontanes just outside Lé dla Creda. We absolutely recommend a short detour to the water-course at the entrance of the Ciastlins valley, from where you can hike to Fodara Masaronn with its Ega de San Vi springs. Along the way, many fascinating stops show just how multi-faceted water is.

K SAN VIGILIO › FURKELPASS (H-R: 4 h)Walk past the Miara cable car station and follow the road up to the hamlet Rara. Turn right onto forest path no. 1 which takes you to Passo Furcia, where a number of inns offer food and drinks. Take the same route to walk back. Alternatively to walking on the paved road, just behind the Chi Vai restaurant you can also take the pretty hiking trail which leads past the Riffa inn. After passing the meadows, you will find the path to the La Miara refuge (stop here for food, drinks and a sun deck) on the left side at the edge of the forest. This route leads back to the main path (no. 1).

L FURKELPASS › ÜCIA BIVACCO (H: 30 min.) Trail no. 1 starts just behind the small church and leads to Ücia Bivacco after a 30-minute walk. Food, drinks and a sun deck are available at the inn.

M FURKELPASS › ÜCIA PICIO PRÉ (H: 40 min.) Setting off from opposite the water reservoir, follow the path marked no. 3 for about 15 minutes until you reach path no. 12, which takes you to Ücia Picio Pré. Food, drinks and a sun deck are available at the inn.

N RODA DLES VILES › walk between the hamlets (2-4 h)Setting off from Pieve di Marebbe, you can enjoy a number of es-pecially beautiful walks (A or B) to the hamlets of Brach, Ciaseles, Frontü, Cianoré, Biëi, Fordora, Frena and La Costa. From each hamlet, the next one is visible and easily reached by connecting tracks and roads, leaving you free to choose the best route to explore the ama-zing beauty of these landscapes and the architectural singularity of the hamlets.

O A SORËDL: theme walk (2 h)The trail meanders upwards along the sunny hillside of Costa and Ches Costes. Setting off from the Miara cable car valley station, fol-low the signs marked A Sorëdl past Ras and Costa. Once you have

CULTURE

FREERIDE TRAILSPure adrenaline: Kronplatz now boasts three white-knuckle freeride trails! Classified as medium-difficult, the Furcia trail from the top of Mount Kronplatz (3.5 km) and the Piz de Plaies trail from the Piz de Plaies peak station (2 km) are guaranteed fun and kicks.Pros only: Die-hard adrenaline junkies can get a bucket full of thrills on the 8 km Herrensteig trail from the top of Mount Kronplatz. Simply catch a cable car to the top from Riscone, Passo Furcia or San Vigilio and race back down at break-neck speed!

KRONPLATZ SKYSCRAPERA giant swing at a dizzying 2275 m above sea level: Hoisted up to a height of 15 m by a cable winch, all you have to do is undo the fastening and off you go, hurtled through the air attached only to a few steel ropes. Not for the faint-hearted!

CONCORDIA 2000 PEACE BELLWith its 3.11 m in height, the Concordia 2000 peace bell is the largest bell in the Alps. Its 11 m panoramic platform at the top of Mount Kronplatz bears the Latin inscription Donet deus populis pacem: May God give peace unto His people. The bell rings every day at 12 pm and every time a country abolishes the death penalty or a war is ended.

MMM CORONESThe highest museum in South Tyrol Kronplatz will be the home of the sixth and last Messner Mountain Museum. Located at 2275 m, this latest project of mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner's lies embedded in a true melting pot of the region's Ladin, Italian and German-speaking population. Dedicated to the most prestigious discipline in mountaineering, the MMM Corones will be inaugurated in the 2015 summer months..

HIKES AROUND SAN VIGILIO AND IN THE FANES-SENES-BRA-IES NATURE PARK

Explore, experience and get to know nature: With this motto in mind, our specially-trained and experienced guides offer unforgettable hikes and a glimpse of the diversity to be found in our local mountains. The more you know about it, the more impressive nature gets – and on these hikes, we put an emphasis on experiencing nature together as a group.

Every excursion has a central topic such as the many tales and sto-ries about the local mountains or the ample, flower-filled meadows which border on the vast karst landscapes that make up the Fanes plateau. From easy family hikes to fascinating excursions for adults, they are a unique experience for all ages.

A big thank you to the regional Department of Nature Parks and their guides for an excellent collaboration in organising this sche-dule – we would not be able to offer such a wide range of activities and guided hikes without their support!

With its lush green pastures, awe-inspiring Dolomite peaks, many hiking trails, well-equipped mountain inns and a sheer endless diver-sity of flora and fauna, the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park is an ample Alpine paradise filled to the brim with stories about kings, princesses, witches and the good old times. It can be conveniently reached by mountain bike or foot, which is why it has become a real magnet for hikers and other nature lovers.

It is home to a number of rare animal species like the Golden Eagle, ibex, marmots and chamois as well as many reptiles and amphibians, thanks to its fertile and rocky natural landscape.

The 10,200 ha of the Puez-Odle Nature Park too are characterised by a striking variety of wildlife and geological contrasts: Nestled

between impressive rock formations, its moonscape-like plateaus are home to countless fossils and the bizarre remains of the Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods. This vast array of rock and soil types, the many different altitude levels and the local microclimate are home to a never-ending variety of plants: Daphne striata, alpenrose rhododen-dron shrubs, berry bushes, spring pasque flowers, crocuses, monks-hood, meadow saffron, arnica and red clover are only a few examples of the Nature Park's rich flora, which also boasts splendid spruce and larch woods alongside fragrant dwarf mountain pines.

And the animal kingdom of the Nature Park is just as exciting, with gorgeous butterflies, cheeky marmots, melodious songbirds ... and armed with a bit of patience and luck, you might even spot an owl, eagle or deer!

San Vigilio and San Martin de Tor ... ONE at heart with nature!

The Fanes-Senes-Braies and the Puez-Odle Nature Parks: our very own UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009.

SAN VIGILIO – LA PLI/PIEVE DI MAREBBE – SAN VIGILIO

San Vigilio church square | 40 min. | 150 m | 9 km

Route: An easy route along a paved road with a short uphill slope just before Curt/Corte. At the Hotel Al Sole, take the road towards Curt/Corte and Pieve di Marebbe. Towering above the hamlet Curt, the idyllic small church offers some fantastic views. The centre of Pieve di Marebbe can be seen from the hamlet and is easily reached on the paved road. With its tall Gothic spires, this church was once the most important one in the valley and is still a popular pilgrimage site. Easy route, suitable for all cycling levels.

SUGGESTED ROUTE: San Vigilio > Curt/Corte > La Pli/Pieve di Marebbe > San Vigilio

SAN VIGILIO – FANES – COL DE LOCIA – CAPANNA ALPINA – SAN VIGILIO

San Vigilio church square | 5–6 h | 1695 m | 62 km

Route: This route runs from San Vigilio all the way to the Fanes pastu-res past the Pederü inn. From the Fanes pastures, it leads briefly uphill to Lé de Limo and with a slight slope across the larger Fanes valley, which is no doubt the most awe-inspiring high valley in the Alps, with Piz Taibun and Cima Scotoni making for an unforgettably picturesque backdrop. After a relatively level bit leading to Col de Locia, a very dif-ficult trail descent runs to Capanna Alpina. The route then continues along an easy and slightly downhill slope to San Martino along the Badia valley cycling track.

NATURE PARK TRAIL: SAN VIGILIO – FANES – SENES – SAN VIGILIO

San Vigilio church square | 6–7 h | 1900 m | 56 km

Route: Definitely one of Europe's most beautiful cycling tours: The Fanes-Senes route leads smoothly from San Vigilio along a narrow toll road up to the Pederü refuge within the Nature Park. After 13 km going slightly uphill, a partly steep gravel road takes you to the cosy Fanes refuge and on to Lé de Limo. Continue descending along the rocky gravel road in the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo. Shortly before the Fiames car park, the road leads back up the Malga Ra Stua inn and on to the Sennes mountain inn, set in a breathtaking backdrop of craggy Dolomite peaks. After descending to the Fodara Vedla refuge and Pederü, the smooth trail back to San Vigilio across the forest is yet ano-ther deserved treat for tired cyclists.

SAN VIGILIO – KRONPLATZ – SAN VIGILIO

San Vigilio church square | 3–4 h | 1232 m | 31 km

Route: Setting off from the centre of San Vigilio, take the main road in the direction of Pieve di Marebbe uphill to Passo Furcia (turning shortly behind the hamlet Curt/Corte). Just past the Hotel Jù Furcia, take a left and cycle uphill on the gravel road towards Kronplatz, first through the forest and then past the Panorama and Graziani moun-tain inns. Don't forget to take in some of the beautiful views of the highest Dolomite peaks and the giant glaciers of the Zillertal Alps! Descending, cycle first to Passo Furcia and then back to San Vigilio.

AGRICULTUREAgriculture plays an important role in South Tyrol. The efforts of local farmers to conserve and protect our cultivated landscapes have also greatly benefited regional tourism. We therefore kindly ask our guests to treat the beauty of our nature and the hard work of our farmers with respect and care. A few basic rules can help you do so quite easily: There are a number of paths and trails available for strolls, hiking and cycling. Please stay on them and do not cross the nearby fields or mea-dows. Park your car carefully and without obstructing roads and paths or access to fields and agricultural/forestry structures and buildings.

Dog owners should at all times make use of the available dog toilets. Please do not under any circumstances let your dog do its business in the fields and pastures – doing so is extremely harmful to the environ-ment as the grass is used for grazing and as hay to feed cattle!

Thank you for helping us protect our wonderful nature.

WE SUGGESTIf you are looking for a special souvenir or even just a piece of San Vigilio di Marebbe to take home with you, why not try some of the

many mouth-watering South Tyrolean products? The Senni coopera-tive for example offers a wide range of produce made with milk from our mountain farms: fresh, unique and free from genetic engineering.

Great taste and quality from our Alpine landscapes!

ISTITUT LADIN MICURÁ DE RÜSAN MARTIN DE TOR Founded in the late 1970s, the Micurà de Rü Institute of Ladin Culture is a key local institution. Thanks to its invaluable scientific research into the language, history and culture of the Ladin population of the Dolomites, it has come to greatly foster and develop the local langua-ge and culture.

Its many publications alongside countless cultural and educational activities have long made an outstanding contribution to the Ladin identity. The Institute organises a series of cultural events and keeps an archive and a library for Ladin studies which is open to the public from Monday to Friday (10 am–12 pm and 3–5 pm).

Watch out for the many exhibitions by Ladin artists organised all throughout summer!
