skilled labor force, the strong regional

focus on the sciences, and its proximity

    to Germanys largest micro-electronics

    cluster.

    Based in Heidelberg, Forum Organic

    Electronics coordinates world-renowned

    companies and research partners to

    develop leading-edge new technologies.

    R&D Institutes and Private Sector

    Collaborations The internationally

    renowned Fraunhofer Society Institutes

are at the frontier of research activities

in Germany and closely cooperate with

industry players along the value chain:

Austr ian l ight ing manufacturer

Zumtobel, for example, formed the joint

    venture LEDONwith the Dresden-based

Fraunhofer IPMS and now benefits from

synergy effects due to the proximity to

    the Organic Electronics Saxony cluster.

Another strategic alliance in this region

    was formed between Heliatek, Fraunho-

fer IPMS, TU Dresden IAPP, and the

University of Ulm who collaborate in the

    area of organic photovoltaics.

Trends in ProductApplicationsSeveral prominent industry trends in

    printed electronics have emerged in

    Germany: Organic photovoltaics (OPV),

    OLED-lighting and printed RFID tags.

OPV Germany hosts the worlds larg-

est photovoltaic (PV) market with 33

    percent of cumulated global installations

in 2012. Since organic solar cells offer a

    thinner, more flexible, and potentially

cheaper alternative to silicon cells and

since the high domestic demand for PV

in Germany functions as an industry

    catalyst, the OPV-market holds promis-

ing projections for this area of printed

    electronics.

    OLED-lighting This technology al-

ready plays a vital role in consumer

electronics such as mobile phones as

well as lighting and signage. The trend

towards flat screen displays is omnipo-

    tent. German chemical company Merck

opened its chemical research center in

    Darmstadt, which provides the material

needed for the production of OLEDs.

    RFID-tags Based on printed elec-

    tronics technologies, RFID-tags are

ready for mass market production. The

    highly developed logistics industry in

Germany is just one market that will

greatly benefit from this trend. A high

value is placed on product certification in

    Germany, creating another natural mar-

ket niche for RFID-tags. PolyIC serves as

an example of a German company at the

    forefront of RFID-tag mass production

    by integrating material research, print-

    ing techniques and chip design.

    Advantages

In sum, Germany holds the key to suc-

cess for your printed electronics busi-

ness because of its R&D strength and

    diverse industrial landscape providing

    perfect opportunities for innovation,

    alliances and collaborations.
