Transcript of INFLUATE Board of Directors Certificate for Lawyers
Legal knowledge and expertise is useful, but not sufficient if you want to become
an effective board member.
The learning you need to perform
* Spencer Stuart was founded in 1956 and is one of the world’s lead-ing executive search consulting firms.
Lawyers in boardrooms are certainly not short of tal-ent. Yet the vast majority fail to reach their full perfor-mance potential because they are unfamiliar with the new types of responsibilities that today’s business envi-ronment demands.
Inspired by the latest research by the OECD and the ex-ecutive search and consulting firm Spencer Stuart* follow-ing key competencies are important especially for lawyers in order to contribute to the board and make a difference: • The capacity to contribute to strategy and to address current
and future opportunities and threats • The courage and sensitivity to challenge management when
3
appropriate and to deploy “charm” and charisma in order to do so in a constructive and convincing manner
• The ability to deal with complex scenarios, yet make decisions based on incomplete information
• Clarity of thought, good judgment, relevant experience, an easy manner and the personal qualities and experience that are both additive and complementary to the existing board
”According to the revised OECD boardroom guide, 85% of the board’s time needs to be dedicated to business development and only 15% of its time to compliance. This changes the role of the lawyer in the boardroom considerably.”Rigmor Zobel, 10 years of experience as a board member, three years as lawyer, specialised in CSR.
The programme is aimed at lawyers with an existing or future board member or executive committee role. We anticipate that participants will range from 33 to 55 years and have a minimum of three years of post-qualification experience.
