Power of the Line – With the cutting edge design of Infiniti models,

Shiro Nakamura and his team take their inspiration from Japanese

calligraphy, architecture, fashion and music.

Infiniti’s Origins

Shiro Nakamura prefers dark suits and oval spectacles.

The slender gentleman speaks in a thoughtful,

deliberate and precise manner. His whole appearance

has something classical about it – yet also modern.

A cellist in a philharmonic orchestra, he occasionally

jams with his custom-built double bass in jazz clubs,

both of which activities he carries out as a true

professional, according to the praise of aficionados.

It is excellent that someone can draw their inspiration

for automotive design from this passion: “It is exactly

the same with cars – you need to find the correct path

between classical and modern.” 58-year old Shiro

Nakamura is perceived as one of the most influential Shiro Nakamura,

current automotive designers. According to the New

York Times: “...he has completely shaken up the

perception of Japanese automotive design.”

Apparently, the long and independent tradition of

Japanese design had not previously manifested itself

with confidence, but thanks to Shiro Nakamura, this is

now changing.

A tour of the new Infiniti Design Centre in Atsugi, a town

south of Tokyo in the green valley of the Sagami River

serves well to examine this theory.

As soon as you leave behind the large reception lobby

and take the escalator up into the building, you are met

by an almost cathedral-like silence. The atmosphere is

quiet, discreet and free from stress. There are islands

of contemplation everywhere in the Design Centre.

The employees are met by a slogan written on the

wall: “Everything starts with a single line.” This line is

carried as a concept throughout all of the buildings.

Shiro Nakamura trusts in “the power of the perfect line”

and with it, a millennia-old Japanese tradition.

The creative head trusts in this as do other Japanese

masters of their art. “The pioneers of Japanese design

are Issey Miyake and Tadao Ando (the architect of the

Design Centre). Younger colleagues are currently Naoto

Fukazawa (Product designer) and Kengo Kuma (also an

architect)”, says Shiro Nakamura, “and together with

these friends, I seek common inspiration.”

They all draw from the same creative gene pool which

has been responsible for the ancestral Japanese

aesthetic. Much of it can be understood within the

concept of “Adeyaka”. Since the Heian dynasty (9th

century) this means luxury, exclusivity, elegance and

courtly refinement. Adeyaka is more than a style, it

is a lifestyle. It is a question of dignity and a positive

view of the world. It is also a question of vividness and

charm expressed in attractive and powerful colours.

“It is our goal to transfer Japanese aesthetics to the

automobile”, says Shiro Nakamura, and he draws the

classic silhouette of an Infiniti car on a piece of paper

like a calligrapher with an ink brush, a slick mixture

of dynamics and precision. He repeats the credo:

“Everything starts with a single line. We take our

heritage and upon this foundation, we create a new and

strong automotive design.”

Effortless Acceleration

Stunning power coupled with unbelievable smoothness –

that’s what distinguishes the Infiniti 3.7-litre V6 engine

(5.0-litre V8 in the FX50). Plus, thanks to Variable Valve

Event and Lift (VVEL) technology, you get the best of

both worlds without compromise: maximum power

with refined delivery. The visceral intensity of 320 PS

(390 PS in the FX50) and a surging acceleration swell

make the power seem effortless. Accelerate to

62 mph in only 5.8 seconds in the FX50 and listen

closely to the roar of the engine – the beauty is in the

details: confident and exuberant.

Dynamic Agility

For maximum agility, optimum balance and smoother

directional changes, the engine is placed as far back

as possible in a front mid-ship format, better balancing

the weight distribution between the axles.

S Premium and G37 Coupé S, S Premium maximises grip

Infiniti V6 Petrol – pioneering power

Regularly celebrated by international awards, the twin-

cam 24-valve, 3.7-litre Infiniti V6 engine produces

320 PS and an impressive 360 Nm torque at 5,200 rpm.

This all-alloy sporting engine endows the Infiniti

range with performance that pleasantly exceeds

expectations. The secret behind the V6 is the VVEL

system (Variable Valve Event and Lift), Infiniti’s

patented technology that continuously adjusts the

valves, unleashing not just great power but, compared

to conventional variable valve designs, also delivering

higher torque and improved emissions. It’s a free-

revving difference you’ll notice with even the slightest

hint of pressure on the accelerator.

Infiniti V8 Petrol – breathtaking

engineering

While VVEL was pioneered for the 3.7-litre V6, the

technology really comes into its own in the 5.0-litre V8

at the heart of the FX50 – one of the fastest and most

rewarding crossovers on the road, with a breathtaking

turn of speed and the muscular exhaust note to prove

it. The engine delivers a stunning 390 PS at 6,500 rpm,

with acceleration from 0–62 mph in just 5.8 seconds.

Plus, plenty of ample torque (500 Nm at 4,400 rpm)

that’s never in short supply.

Infiniti V6 Diesel* – even more torque

on board

Infiniti transfers this same driving pleasure and

exhilarating performance to the new Diesel engine.

Available in EX and FX models from early 2010 and in

the M from September 2010, the new 3.0-litre V6 Diesel

engine offers the highest torque of any Infiniti (550 Nm

from 1,750 rpm) – that’s even higher than the V8 Petrol

engine. The 7-speed automatic transmission with

adaptive programming benefits both drivability and

fuel economy – with no compromise on performance

either. Touch the gas pedal and you’ll feel immediate

response, with top output reaching an impressive

238 PS at 3,750 rpm.

Infiniti Hybrid – improved fuel economy,

performance and driving pleasure

From 2011, Infiniti will be introducing a Hybrid in the

Infiniti M that continues our focus on maximising

driving pleasure. With a charismatic V6 petrol engine

and Rear-Wheel-Drive (RWD) handling, drivers can

look forward to linear performance and direct driving

response – with consistent control in all conditions.

The concept of Hybrid will take on a whole new

meaning.

Dynamic Performance The heart of our inspiration – Infiniti performance enginesWe measure performance in horsepower – and adrenaline

and increases stability at higher speeds without

sacrificing driving sensation. And in extreme situations,

a viscous Limited Slip Differential (LSD) distributes

torque between the rear wheels. For athletic precision on

the road, the FX50 features Rear Active Steering (RAS)1.

Pleasure and Control

The intelligent All-Wheel-Drive system (ATTESA E-TS AWD),

standard on the FX, EX and optional on the Infiniti G,

dynamically adapts to road conditions: shifting power

to the front wheels to boost traction and control when

conditions are difficult and, in good conditions, shifting

power to the rear wheels for greater driving pleasure.

Powerful Brakes

Sports brakes are available on almost all models,

featuring lightweight aluminium opposite piston

callipers to allow for bigger brake discs without added

weight. The 350 mm and 355 mm discs ensure better

control, improved fade resistance and faster, stronger

stopping power.

See and be seen

When reverse-parking, a discreet rear view camera

(standard on FX an G Convertible, optional on other

models) transmits colour images of the area directly

behind your vehicle to the centre console display.

These images are complemented by visual and audible

signals from the front and rear parking sensors.

The optional Around View Monitor (AVM) uses front,

rear and side-mounted cameras to provide you with a

bird’s eye view of your Infiniti EX or FX.

When you’re driving on twisting roads, the Adaptive

Front-lighting System (AFS) provides you with better

visibility at night. Depending on the steering angle and

vehicle speed, the bi-Xenon headlights swivel accordingly

to increase lighting effectiveness. AFS is standard on FX,

Infiniti G, G Coupé and G Convertible, with Bi-Xenon

lights and also on EX with Xenon lights.

Peace Of MindEnjoy the fast lane in calm

1 ESP cannot help prevent accidents as a result of abrupt steering movements,

inattentiveness or dangerous driving. Please always drive safely.

2 Airbags are simply a supplementary restraint system. Make sure you always wear

your seat belt. Even if occupant-recognition sensors are fitted, rear-facing child

seats should not be used in the front passenger seat. All children aged 12 and under

should ride in the rear seat properly secured by child seats, booster seats or a seat

belt, depending on their respective age. Airbags are only deployed in certain accident

scenarios. Consult the owner’s manual for further information.

3 Intelligent Cruise Control with Intelligent Brake Assist: these systems are not designed

to prevent collisions. They do not automatically bring the vehicle to a stop (the power

of automatic braking is limited to 20 %). Failure to apply the brakes may lead to an

accident.

Safe as can be

Electronic Stability Programme (ESP)1 and Electronic

Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) are standard on all

Infiniti cars. ESP provides enhanced control in

emergency manoeuvres while EBD reduces brake wear

and the vehicle’s tendency to dive when braking.

The Infiniti Airbag2 System is also standard in all

models. In case of a serious accident, sophisticated

sensors trigger the deployment of six different air bags

within a matter of milliseconds.

The optional Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC)3,

uses laser sensors to detect vehicles ahead of you,

maintaining a preset distance and warns you if the

distance suddenly shortens. In case the distance

between your Infiniti and the vehicle in front shortens

dramatically, with the Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA),

the braking system is automatically activated, thus

reducing the consequences of any potential impact.

In city driving, the Low Speed Following (LSF) feature

maintains a preset distance to the car ahead in the

same lane – speeding up and slowing down as the

traffic progresses.

The optional Bose® Premium Sound System has been

custom-designed for the specif ic model cabin to let

you experience the power and emotion of a concert

hall performance. You’ll not only hear music, but feel

it with every cell of your body. Every note, every rif f

and every beat.

Intelligent Key (I-Key) is another attractive feature. At a

mere touch on the door handle button, you unlock your

car – and the driver’s seat, steering wheel and exterior

mirrors adjust to your pre-defined personal settings.

Scratch Shield paint is fully unique innovation on the

market: a soft clear coat of paint heals light scratches

and swirl marks for long lasting brilliance of the

exterior colour.

Inspired Safety from Infiniti

Infiniti FX is first luxury SUV to earn

all five stars with the new and more

rigorous test from the Euro NCAP– the world’s most

demanding independent crash test organisation.

Euro NCAP’s awarding of the maximum five stars to

the FX is an endorsement of the holistic, high-tech

approach to safety that Infiniti takes with all its

models. The high-performance luxury crossover from

Japan is the first Infiniti ever to face Euro NCAP’s crash

barrier – as well as the first luxury SUV to be assessed

under 2009’s more rigorous new system.

The results – from the world’s most demanding

independent crash test organisation – are testament

to the engineers’ efforts and the commitment to

road safety that’s been at the heart of Infiniti since

the company was formed 20 years ago. At Infiniti,

dedicated engineering teams are involved from the

design stage to ensure every new model not only

surpasses all known standards but also leads the way

in introducing new safety technologies for the future.

In the tests for 2009, Euro NCAP considers a new

“safety assist” element in determining star ratings. The

FX recorded a remarkable 99% – a reflection of both

its highly advanced safety systems and the fact that

the majority of them are standard in every version.

In this safety assist categor y, Euro NCAP awarded

the FX extra points for its standard stability control

system, seat-belt reminders for all seats and its driver-

set speed limiter – all features present in every FX. But

the luxury marque’s holistic approach to safety means

Euro NCAP could have taken many more driver aids

into account besides: for example the FX’s standard

seat-belt pretensioners that act to grip the front seat

occupants under fast manoeuvres, reversing camera,

Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), intelligent All-Wheel-

Drive (AWD) and Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS)

with bi-Xenon headlights.

40GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD). This empowers lightning

fast operation and ample data storage for multi-

country information and entertainment on the road.

accepted, etc.) and you’ll not only get a list of nearby

restaurant reservation with one touch dialling, thanks

to standard Bluetooth® connection to your phone in the

In-vehicle music management and web

updates with Gracenote® music database

Place a music CD in your Infiniti Connectiviti+ system

and, if you wish, the music will automatically be

added to your on-board music collection. The built-in

Gracenote® music database recognises and displays

song information from your music CDs, including album

cover, artist name, and song title. If song titles and

artist name are not displayed, you can easily update

untitled music files by using the online Gracenote®

music database. Simply login to http://www.

be every bit as diverse as the car so let´s leave the

fancy lighting arrangements and obsessive detail to

all those other guys. Our photoset is going to simmer

with life. It suits the designers and their fashion

better – and the cars. Sai So and Hiroaki Kanai are

causing an almighty stir in the fashion world with their

So where to shoot? Right there where they all enjoy

it – or even don’t. Models, camera and team make a

spontaneous decision and react as quickly as the car.

The set is wherever Berlin is most vibrant, be it at

Potsdamer Platz or in a small road. It doesn’t matter,

as long as it is where there is life in this mad city.

Why? Because creativity does not need bureaucracy.

Permission to photograph is something for those

who always dance to the rules and not something for

pictures that are going to break all the rules. You’ll see

that in the pictures. A wonderful apparition, cheeky,

After ten minutes, it’s all over again as if nothing had

happened and the next spontaneous location is waiting.

So the collection, vanity cases and equipment get piled

into the versatile trunk, the models leap onto the rear

seat, we jump into the EX37 GT Premium V6, take a 360

degree view in the Around View Monitor (AVM) and off

we go. Pure euphoria from the successful shoot make it

tempting to floor the accelerator and let the automatic

box drop a cog or two to get us to one hundred in 6.4

seconds with seven changes, reaching the magical top

speed of 149 mph (240 km/h), but reason triumphs.

Spontaneity and quick reactions are called for, not top

speed. At least not here in town, despite the amazing

braking power, All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) system and because

of a certain desire to keep the driving licence clean!


So – back to basics. Fashion should be genuine, lively

and authentic, like our EX, the automotive embodiment

of temptation. The seductive silhouette of a coupé

combined with the masterful seating position of an

Following a recommendation to catch a spectacular view of

the dawn, I enjoy driving my Infiniti G Coupé across isolated

terrain to a mysterious vantage point in the Sahara. But I am

not alone.

G Coupé – The Pulse Of The Desert

It’s 4:00 a.m. The desert darkness shimmers eerily in

the moonlight. I’m driving swiftly, sure of my path

thanks to the bi-Xenon Adaptive Front-lighting System

(AFS), which precisely swivels the head-lights

dynamically to my direction, steering angle and speed.

I’m not exactly sure where I’m headed, but the front

midship Rear-Wheel-Drive (RWD) platform catapults me

forwards with such confidence, and the smooth, linear

feeling of the steering feels so natural, it almost seems

like home turf.

Underscoring this sense of control is the 14-way

adjustable sports seat which comfortably hugs the

contours of my body – as well as my perfect line-of-

sight to the instrumentation, which automatically

moved in response to the steering wheel adjustments I

made before launching.

It’s just me and my muscular steed under the velvety

desert sky. Then something flashes in the moonlight.

A robed figure on a tall Arab steed galloping along the

sharp silhouette of the horizon.

Effortlessly, I accelerate the powerful 320 PS 6-cylinder

engine, relishing the enormous thrust as I charge

forward. Taking full advantage of the 4 Wheel Active

Steering (4WAS) I swerve through sharp corners in full

command, the viscous Limited Slip Differential (LSD)

squeezing out extra momentum from the rear wheels.

Underscoring this sense of

control is the 14-way adjustable

sports seat …


Engineering excitement. I am gaining on the rider. In the faint glow of the

coming day, I recognise a woman’s shape beneath the

robes. She is veiled, but I remember the eyes – I saw

them last evening at an Embassy reception. My pulse

races as she turns her head away and gallops out of

sight over a ridge. Too absorbed in the chase to

delegate affairs to the 7-speed automatic transmission,

I intuitively apply the magnesium paddle shifts on the

steering wheel, Downshift Rev Matching (DRM)

ensuring a smooth and swift gear change as I begin a

I catch sight of her again. In an adventurous feat of

horsemanship, she charges ahead. We’re neck and

neck now, but she’s ignoring me as we mount the crest

of a hill. I slam on the 355 mm sports brakes and the

4-piston opposed callipers bring me to a prompt and

controlled halt. I jump out as she leaps to the ground.

The first ray of the golden sunrise sparkles in her eyes.

As if in unison, we turn to the east. It’s dawn, and she’s

all mine.

Circumstances Mel Gee Hendersen is an unusual woman with an adventurous soul,

who has made a career out of her passion: she travels the globe

for the T V series “Escapeseeker” to get a unique perspective on

the world’s most beautiful and exotic places. Is it any wonder she

would choose to drive an extraordinary car? V6 cylinder engine. She revs it just for fun, the perfectly

symmetrical exhaust system emitting a thrilling roar – it’s

also thrilling to know the engine gives her the power to

accelerate from 0 – 62 mph in only 6.4 seconds.

Because it combines such power with incredible lightness,

she’s named her car “Grace”. But also, adds Mel, because

of its “gorgeous, dignified beauty, like Grace Kelly”. Indeed,

the designers of the convertible have made no compromises

purity, such as in the case of a Japanese lacquer tray, a

valuable dish or a well balanced tea pot design.

Harmony with creation, harmony with nature and

reduction as the ultimate objective. It is within this

sense that Infiniti’s design credo “Everything starts

with a single line” can be understood.

In the modern Japanese world, we find this philosophy

of “Japanese luxury” expressed for instance in the

work of Tadao Ando, the architect of grand reduction,

who is concerned not just with formal clarity, but also

absolute precision and new dimensions in materiality.

An example is when he displays exposed concrete

so that it seems to have the sheen of marble. Or for

example in the way that Issey Miyake gives substance

to his delicate materials with accordion pleats or uses

extravagant manufacturing technologies so that his

items of clothing are so comfortable for the wearer,

despite their technoid appearance.

In this sense, Japanese luxury penetrates much more

into the personal areas of life, for example whether it

is the case of supporting a customer or looking after

a visitor. The unobtrusive and much more than polite

manner of paying attention with which well-trained

staff look after their guests. The highest level of
