In 2012-13 training of the workforce on aseptic technique was

required under the National Safety and Quality Health Service

Standards accreditation process.

We developed (2012) and implemented (2013) resources to provide

this training to our regional workforce based on the ANTT®

framework outlined in the Australian Guidelines for the Prevention

and Control of Infection in Healthcare.

Due to large distances between our health service campuses, and

the limited availability of clinical educators, online learning became

the main mode of training delivery.

PROJECT

By late 2013 ongoing clinical practice audits were

benchmarked regionally and identified that

clinician’s verbal recall of ANTT® framework

principles was poor. This told us the online method of

training delivery was not working!

So… What could be used

anywhere, anytime, and by anyone to:

✓ consolidate principles

✓ practice the selection of aseptic technique

✓ inspire clinician ongoing learning

✓ maximise workforce coverage

✓ not rely on electronic systems

OUTCOME

In 2019 clinician verbal recall for aseptic

technique using the ANTT® framework

principles has improved significantly and the

principles embedded into practice.

The online learning has provided the

theoretical knowledge, while the additional

hands-on educational tools were successful in

guiding knowledge into practice.
