JOB SUMMARY

The Infection Control Practitioner is responsible for implementing and maintaining the multiple facets of the Infection Control Program of the Methodist Hospital. He/she is a liaison between all departments and the Infection Prevention and Control Committee. This individual maintains a routine surveillance program of patients, personnel, and the environmental problems that present a real or potential threat to the welfare of patients, visitors, or personnel throughout the institution.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Recognize, evaluate, make recommendations to control or prevent transmission of infection in the healthcare setting. Maintain a practical, effective surveillance system to facilitate identification of potential prevention or control strategies.

2. Provide infection control training and act as an infection control resource.

3. Maintain appropriate documentation for regulatory compliance.

4. Provide 24-hour coverage for infection control as indicated.

5. Seek out and identify educational opportunities relevant to infectious disease, hospital epidemiology, or other areas for professional growth.

6. Recognize and investigate clusters of infection exceeding endemic conditions.

7. Participate/promote communication within the infection control team.

8. Demonstrates the components of the I CARE values statement.

9. Follows all safety rules while on the job. Reports accidents promptly and corrects minor safety hazards. Communicates with peers and management regarding any hazards identified in the workplace.

10. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTSBS in Nursing or BS in Medical Technology, Microbiology, Masters in Public Health or other appropriate

discipline.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSThe Infection Control Practitioner should have a minimum of 5 years experience as a registered nurse, medical technologist, microbiologist or other appropriate discipline in an acute care setting. Previous

experience in infection control, operating room or public health is desirable.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIREDRegistered Nurse with a current license, Medical Technologist, Microbiologist or other appropriate

discipline.Certification in Infection Control required or certification eligible with exam pending

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREDSound knowledge of asepsis essential. Continuing education in microbiology, epidemiology and statistics should be acquired if not present at time of employment.Must have ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.Must possess evidence of leadership and a strong aptitude for teaching.Basic computer skills
