WHAT IS INERT GAS & INERTCONDITION

Inert Gas is a gas or a mixture of gases, suchas flue gas, containing insufficient oxygen tosupport the combustion of hydrocarbons.

An Inert condition is a condition in which theoxygen content throughout the atmosphere ofa tank has been reduced to 8% or less by volume.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE INERT GASGENERATOR SYSTEM

BURNER/SCRUBBER UNITThe burner/scrubber unit requires less deck space than any other known de-sign. This is due to the compact design with scrubber and integrated combustion chamber. The quality of gas producedis not affected by rolling or movment of the ship.

The burner ensures an complete combustion with a simple design and no moving parts. Heat/corrosion resistant steel is used for all surfaces exposed to heat and/or sea water.

BLOWER UNITSThe blower units are of a single stagecentrifugal type with motors and each unit is arranged on a rigid steel base frame equipped with resilient mountings.

DECK WATER SEALThe deck water seal is of displacementsemi-dry type internally GRP coated. Upon loss of positive flow, the water will immediately close the seal. The mesh demister is effectively preventing carryover of water droplets under all flow conditions.

PRESSURE/VACUUM BREAKERThe pressure vacuum breaker is animportant device for the ship’s safety,releasing excessive pressure or vacuum from the cargo tanks.

CONTROL SYSTEMThe control system is based on aProgrammable Logical Control (PLC).Several touch screen with mimic flowdiagrams are implemented as well as the controls required for safe and easyoperation with a minimum of operatorsupervision. Additional functions like user manuals and condition monitoring can also be included. The capacity is remotely controlled from a panel in the cargo control room.

USE OF INERT GAS ON A TANKER

• Inert gas on a tanker is used for cargo handling and is the most important safety systems for avoiding explosions.• The system is used when the vessel is off-loading.• The empty tanks are filled with inert gas.• The system can also be used in ballast tanks to prevent corrosion.• When inert gas is not used the consequences can be devastating as shown in the tanker explosion pictured

Nitrogen System produce an very pure and dry gas and is therefore selected for application where contamination of cargo and/or application area is at risk. The installation is more costly than conventional Inert Gas Systems but due to the benefit of clean and dry inert gas its has been commonly used onboard ship.
