The typical Glass and Mother of Pearl (MOP) suppliers in Asia are not sympathetic to our US standards. In many cases our indus-try is secondary to their material uses and sales in their own country.

Shells and glasses are first used for button manufacturing, fertilizers, and jewelry. Further crushing and sizing of left over materials are then sent to the United States for our market. Crushed shells are chemical-ly treated to remove impurities. The greater surface area of contaminants from treating crushed shells makes it difficult to fully rinse and clean the MOP. Sizing is often done on make shift screens of non-standard sizing.
