The Premier Businessowners program is generally for small to medium businesses that present low to medium premises/operations exposures and low products/completed operations exposures. In the next few pages, you will find additional information about several of the Premier Businessowners programs that are written in your particular area of the country. While space in this guide doesn’t allow us to list all the eligibility rules and guidelines for every program, the information found in the following pages should give you a good idea of the types of risks Allied Insurance likes to write.

And as you know, coverages may vary from program to program; generally speaking you will find that the Premier Businessowners programs provide broad property and liability protection for your clients.

The Premier Businessowners Advantage Endorsement (PB 20 99) is an optional endorsement designed to appeal to a wide range of insureds across all eight Businessowners programs. Also available is an Advantage endorsement with Employee Dishonesty Coverage (PB 20 98). Both coverages are available for the following BOP programs:

The Auto Service Program is for small to medium auto service and repair businesses. With our broad appetite, we are willing to write most auto service and repair businesses on our BOP program. We are especially interested in the businesses listed below.

Food Service Program

The Food Service Program is for establishments that prepare and serve food directly to a consumer. We will entertain a wide variety of restaurants within this program ranging from limited cooking to fine dining. Please refer to the eLibrary for a complete classification listing and underwriting guidelines.

Classification Definitions:

Family Style: A “full menu” restaurant that caters primarily to families. E.g., American Style, Asian, BBQ, California Cuisine, Chinese, Ethnic, Italian, Japanese, Mexican, Seafood, Steak House.

Fast Food: A restaurant wherein food is purchased at a counter and then taken to the dining area to be consumed. These establishments typically also include take-out as well as drive thru service. They will include “limited cooking” type appliances as well as grills, broilers, deep fat fryers, roasters or BBQ’s. E.g., Chicken, Hamburger, BBQ, Hot Dog, Mexican, Oriental, Seafood.

Fine Dining: A “full menu” restaurant wherein the average entree price is $14.00 or more as evidenced by their current menu. E.g., American Style, Asian, BBQ, California Cuisine, Chinese, Ethnic, Italian, Japanese, Mexican, Seafood, Steak House.

Exquisite Fine Dining: An upscale “full menu” restaurant wherein the average entree price is $25.00 or more as evidenced by their current menu. (CA only)

Full Menu: A restaurant that offers a variety of foods with waiter/waitress service at tables. Takeout is limited (less than 10%) and no drive-thru service is provided. Food preparation will use the full array of cooking methods.

Limited Cooking: No cooking except by microwave or convection ovens, steamers or toasters. This class shall not include food preparation with deep fat fryers (excluding shallow donut fryers), grills, broilers, roasters, barbecuing, solid fuel cooking (e.g., wood), or other processes capable of producing grease-laden vapors requiring an exhaust system. E.g., Bagel Shop, Coffee Shop, Delicatessen, Ice Cream Store, Pasta Restaurant, Pizza Restaurant, Sandwich Shop, Yogurt Shop.

Take-Out-Only: No beverages or food served for consumption on premises. There may be a small customer waiting area, however no tables or other facilities are provided for the customer to eat on the premises.

Key Underwriting Guidelines:• In business for at least three years under current ownership.

• A financially sound and successful business.

• Operate on a year-round basis.

• Designed for restaurant or food service occupancy.

• Located in protection classes 1-8 with paid fire response.

• Meets the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.

• Properly protected with both smoke and fire alarms.

• If liquor is served, these receipts may not exceed 25% of total gross receipts except: 35% for fine dining, 45% for exquisite fine dining in CA; 50% for NV.

• Liquor Liability Coverage is available by endorsement; subject to liquor underwritingcriteria. See the eLibrary or contact your underwriter.

• Catering receipts should not exceed 50% of total gross receipts.

• Fast Food restaurant risks should: • have total property exposure less than $2,000,000 per premises • not offer residential delivery

• Restaurants of frame construction should contain property values of $1,000,000 or less unless protected by an automatic sprinkler system.

Commercial Cooking Requirements:• All cooking equipment should meet NFPA 96 Commercial Cooking requirements.

• An automatic extinguishing system protecting the hood, duct, and all surfaces ofgrills, ranges, deep fat fryers, broilers and stoves meeting UL-300 requirements.

• A service contract for semiannual inspection and maintenance of the extinguishingsystem and quarterly flue cleaning.

• A manual release device for the extinguishing system located in the path of exitfrom the cooking area.

• Automatic thermostat controls with a high limit switch and fuel cut off to the deepfat fryers.

• A regular in house cleaning schedule for hoods and filters with professional cleaningat least quarterly.

• A minimum of 18 inches clearance between all hoods and ducts from combustiblematerials.

• All lights in the hood of explosion proof type.

Food Service Program

Key Coverages:

• Spoilage from Power Outage (PB 04 15) This endorsement provides coverage onlyfor spoilage of perishable stock, including change in temperature or humidity,caused by power outage, whether on or off premises.

This coverage is broader than the Utility Service endorsement, as the power outage cause of the loss does not need to be triggered by a covered cause of loss. This differs from the Utility Service endorsement, which requires a covered cause of loss to trigger the interruption of service.

• Liquor Liability Coverage (PB 63 03) Coverage for the legal liability for bodily injury or property damage because of the insured’s serving or sale of alcohol to a customer.

• Equipment Breakdown Coverage (included) Protects against damage caused bypower surges, mechanical breakdown, motor burnout, and boiler damage.

Habitational Program

The Habitational program is generally intended for apartments, condominium associations and townhouse associations.

Key Underwriting Guidelines:

• Minimum lease term of 6 months, 12 month term is preferred. Signed leaseagreement between the insured and each tenant is required. (Apartment only)

• On-site management is recommended for all locations with more than 30 units.This can be a manager who lives on the premises full time or a manager who keepsregular office hours on-site. (Apartment only)

• Recommended that all apartment tenants carry renters insurance. Ideally, theinsured would include this in the written lease agreement and obtain certificates ofinsurance.

• Condominiums should be at least 75% owner occupied (less than 25% rented out).

• Condominium owners must have their own insurance.

• Buildings 4 or more stories must be 100% sprinklered.

• Other restrictions may apply; refer to program eligibility in the eLibrary for details.

Property

• Risks with more than 30 units should have a professional qualified maintenancestaff, with an established preventive maintenance program.

• Compliance with NFPA 70 – National Electric Code.

• Apartment and Condominium buildings should have all dryer vents cleanedannually by a professional contractor.

General Liability

• Compliance with NFPA 101 – Life Safety Code.

• Two means of egress from each living unit, except as permitted otherwise byNFPA 101 – Life Safety Code.

• Buildings must be equipped with operational UL listed or approved central stationmonitored automatic fire detectors (smoke/heat):

• Located in each residence.

• Located in common areas.

• Detectors should be hard wired and installed in accordance with NFPA 72 –National Fire Alarm Code.

• Carbon monoxide alarms may be required• 1 or 2 story buildings equipped with battery powered detectors may be acceptable if:

• Management has demonstrated its reliability with periodic testing and battery replacement.

• The testing is documented.

• Hardwired alarms with battery backup are required on any building over 2 stories.

Motel Program

The Motel program is generally intended for newer moderately priced franchised business class motel properties, which offer limited services and facilities. This program is not intended for the larger convention-oriented risks with a bar, tavern, or restaurant exposure in the same building.

Key Underwriting Guidelines:

• Motels should be affiliated with a national or regional franchise operations. Risks not associated with a national or regional franchise operation may be considered – please discuss with your underwriter.

• Property should be less than 20 years old.

• The motel must be in business under current ownership for a minimum of 3 years.

• The motel must be open for year-round occupancy and maintain an occupancy rateof at least 60%.

• The motel must be catering to guests needing overnight accommodations for a dayor more.

• Buildings must be 6 stories or less. Buildings 3 or more stories must be 100%sprinklered with a minimum 65 point ISO grading and proper alternative means ofegress.

• No rentals by the month or longer, bars, taverns, live entertainment, restaurantsattached to the motel, or playgrounds.

• Swimming pools, spas, hot tubs and fitness facilities are allowed if there is a dailywritten maintenance program or record, and no diving boards or slides on the pool.

• Properties should be in protection classes 1-8.

• Risks that serve a light breakfast or dinner requiring limited cooking are eligible. Kitchenette or other in-room limited cooking facilities are also acceptable.

• Hard wired smoke and heat detectors and alarms must be present in all guest rooms.

• Risks that offer free “Happy Hour” drinks for their guests (only) are eligible, only if amotel employee dispenses the drinks.

Motel Program

Key Coverages:

• Liability for Guests’ Property (PB 58 01) Provides coverage for the motel’s legalliability arising out of loss of or damage to property of their guests, while suchproperty is in the motel building or in the possession of the motel outside of themotel building.

• Utility Services (PB 04 56) This endorsement insures against loss caused by theinterruption of service of a specified utility when the interruption results from a covered cause of loss to the utility property. This endorsement is also extended to cover the loss of income beginning 12 hours after the interruption of service forces suspension of your operations.

• Business Income Provides coverage for loss of business income sustained that occurs after the date of direct physical loss or damage. Coverage choices for the actual loss sustained (ALS) period range from 3 to 24 months.

Key Underwriting Guidelines:

• Property should occupy less than 25,000 square feet of mercantile space.

• Operations should have less than $5,000,000 in annual gross receipts.

• An additional 25,000 square feet of habitational or office space may be included.

• Storage facilities may be included if they are located in a separate building owned by the insured which are incidental to an eligible process/service risk and do not exceed 25,000 square feet.

• Off-premises installation, service, and/or repair exposures should not have receipts from those operations that exceed 25% of total receipts.

• Risks cannot primarily be a contractor.

• Barbers and beauticians should not offer services beyond the normal haircutting, perms, highlighting, tinting, manicures, pedicures, etc. Day spas, electrolysis, and permanent make-up risks are not eligible.

• Dry cleaning plants should have retail outlets and should not do a substantial amount of specialty work such as furs, high-valued rugs; leathers, etc..

• Risks located in protection class 9 or 10 will need underwriter approval.

• Professional liability is available for funeral directors, beauticians and printers.

The Allied Church program is for religious organizations whose principal activities involve holding religious services and ceremonies. All denominations may be considered. We are especially interested in churches that meet the basic eligibility and underwriting guidelines described below.

Key Underwriting Guidelines:

• Locations must be utilized principally to hold religious services and ceremonies.

• The church must own and insure its own building. Leased premises are not eligible.

• Locations occupied for the following or similar purposes may be included if writtenin conjunction with the primary church locations: residences for pastors and/orother employees; religious educational facilities (not including church-sponsoredelementary, junior high, middle, senior high, or post-secondary schools); sale ofreligious publications or articles; and church administrative offices.

Printers Program

The Allied Printers program for commercial printers is designed for the third party printer and provides flexible, comprehensive coverage at a reasonable cost. Major printing processes are letterpress, lithography, gravure, and flexography. Offset printing contains the largest share of the printing industry’s dollar volume. Lithographic, or offset, printing has gradually replaced letterpress and is now the most widely used printing process.

Key Underwriting Guidelines:

• Coverage may be provided only for those commercial printers doing printing jobsfor third parties.

• The program is not available for publishers and newspaper and/or “shopper”publishers.

• The program is not available for printers with annual gross sales exceeding$10,000,000.

• Proper and frequent disposal of waste in approved containers is highly desirable.Flammable liquids should be stored in approved safety cans, and residues shouldnot be dumped into normal drains or sewers.

• Housekeeping and general maintenance should be average or better, especiallyin any paper storage or binding areas of the plant. The general public, includingcustomers, should not have access to any work areas.

• There should be adequate ventilation, particularly at floor level, to prevent thecollection of vapors. Ventilation ducts should be cleaned regularly.

• All equipment should be bonded and grounded, and presses should be equippedwith static eliminators.

• Adequate quality control of printed material is of extreme importance. Productiondocuments should be kept up to date.

• Customers should proofread and approve material prior to final printing. Thecustomer contract should include a hold harmless agreement, if at all possible.

• If the insured subcontracts any printing jobs, the insured should require thesubcontractor to carry adequate insurance, including errors and omissions liabilitycoverage.

Key Underwriting Guidelines:

• Wholesalers and distributors are eligible for this program if they meet the followingdefinitions: A “wholesaler” is a business selling merchandise for resale tomanufacturers, builders, contractors, or others for use in their business, or as rawmaterials. A “distributor” is a merchant or intermediary who sells products mainlyfor resale or business use and who sells chiefly to dealers or stores, othermerchants, industrial, institutional, and commercial users.

• Smaller wholesalers and distributors that do not meet the limits and receiptsguidelines may qualify for our premier businessowners wholesalers program.

• Total floor area must be greater than 50,000 square feet.

• Do not use basement areas not open to the public in computing floor areas forbuildings or personal property.

• Building values must be greater than $2,000,000, if building coverage is provided.

• Business Personal Property must be greater than $3,000,000 or annual grossreceipts must be greater than $8,000,000.

• Risks should not derive more than 10% of gross annual sales from the installation,service, or repair of any product sold by the risk or from the sale of products to anultimate household consumer.

• Risks should not do any manufacturing, processing, repackaging, modifying, etc. ofproducts sold under their own label or the label of others. (For example, bottling,icemaking, meat cutting, etc.)

Basic Bond Underwriting Guidelines

Contract Bid, Performance, and Payment Bonds:• Contractors should be small to medium sized, generally $5,000,000 and under for

a single job• Contractors should have good credit; solid, verifiable net worth (personal and

business); and good references• Contractors should have experience in job size, scope, and territory• Contractors should have three most recent year-end business financial statements • Contractors must have current personal financial statement on each owner/officer• Personal financial strength is considered• CPA prepared financial statements are preferred but not always required• Minimum amounts of working capital are not required

Commercial Surety Bonds:• Commercial bonds cover obligations typically required by law or regulation• Commercial bonds include License & Permit, Court, Probate, Public Official, Notary,

Federal and Miscellaneous bonds• Underwriting guidelines vary greatly and are more fully explained when talking

with a bond underwriter• Many of the commercial bonds are underwritten freely on the BAS

Fidelity Bonds:• Fidelity bonds include Standard Employee Dishonesty, Business Services (i.e.,

Janitorial), and ERISA

• $100,000 maximum limit on Standard Employee Dishonesty • $25,000 maximum limit on Business Services/Janitorial • $500,000 maximum limit on ERISA• Controls should be present in areas where theft can occur• There should be no history of theft• Premiums based on number of rateable employees, controls, and business class• Amount of ERISA Coverage must equal at least 10% of planned funds• ERISA and Business Services Bonds are available on the BAS

Bond Automation System (BAS)The Bond Automation System (BAS), located on the Agent Center, allows you to purchase many of your commercial surety & fidelity bonds online for your customers. BAS is easy to use and allows you to issue bonds quickly and efficiently. Because bonds are stored electronically, you can print your bonds and Powers-of-Attorney right from your office.
