Industry RoleI have started to look into my desired industry role. I already have a strong idea of what i want to do when I finish my university course which is to become a character animator whether this is for films or games. I have always enjoyed animating in Maya over other mediums. I would like to start out in a small animation company working on short films and then later move on to working on feature films and TV shows. Character animation has always been appealing to me ever since I watched the animated movie “The Iron Giant” and ever since then I have always perused a career in animation. I then decided I wanted to focus on 3D character animation over 2D as I fell in love with the way the models worked and I could see the character in a 3D space. As a character animator I will be required to work with other animators, artists and designers to bring characters to life. I will need to maintain a high level and productivity and animation quality throughout projects whilst meeting all deadlines that have been set. I will also need to give characters effects such as emotions, personalities and behaviours.

Current SituationI am currently Studying Animation at the University of Wolverhampton. I have a pretty simple showreel showcasing my character animation skills. As I am about to finish university I need to start looking into job offers in character animation from animation studios. I will not be able to start travelling as of right now due to not having the money to support it. So I will need to find a job somewhere fairly local to me. This I can use to fund my own animation projects which I can then send off to animation festivals and maybe have their support in funding so that I can travel around and advertise myself and expand my mind with new creative ideas.

Ideal SituationMy ideal situation would be to finish University and move straight into a small animation company working short films. Where I would have myself noticed by other companies from the animations I produce and moving my way up the ladder.

Steps to successAfter finishing my University studies I would like to move onto working within a small animation studio as a character animator. This will allow me to carry on improving on my animation skills and learning the ways in which the industry produce their animated films and getting a good feel for the atmosphere. I will also be creating animations in my own time as personal set projects. With these I will be entering competitions and animation festivals to advertise myself more and access future potential employers and contacts. After working at the studio to the point where I feel more confident about my skills and my understand of how the industry works from actual experience I would then like to apply to work for a larger company, working on TV shows and short films. The increase in work load will help me to test my organisational skills and prepare me for working at my dream animation company “Riot Games”. After 3 or 4 years of working at this company and would start looking into the possibility of apply to Riot Games and start planning a move to Los Angeles, USA where one of their studios is located. After applying to Riot games if I am offered an interview and then offered a role within the company I would then move to Los Angeles and proceed to start working on my set project.

Skills AuditI believe my 3D animation skills so far are ok for me to start within a small company working on short films. However I will need to improve upon these skills. I have noticed areas where I struggle and need to work on such as blocking passes. When in this phase I sometimes end up creating a new scene and creating the animation again from scratch with the help of video references nut without the help of the blocking pass that I created to plan out spacing and timing. I also try to make animations too smooth and they end up looking fake and unrealistic. I have started trying to improve on this with my latest animations and so far I am making progress but slowly. I would say my character animation skills is more on the intermediate side but with allot more to learn from actually working within the industry.

I am also lacking in my drawing skills and I have yet to really try and improve on it. I plan to start drawing more when I finish my university course and join life drawing classes. This skill is not a necessity for the role I want to go into but it would be a valuable skill to have and would help with idea generation and to convey my thoughts with other team members. To be a good 2D animator, I will need to be able to create a character proportionately and be able to re-create realistic muscle movements depending on the character that is being animated. I would also need to create believable facial and body expressions, such as excitement, surprise, anger and sadness. I will need to be able to create lip-syncing animation to the appropriate voice acting. Even though 3D character animators will be relying more on computer software to create animated characters, the knowledge of drawing motion and depth will make 3D models and animation come to life in a more realistic way. As of now I believe my drawing skills are on the beginner’s side.

I would also like to learn how to create and rig 3D models. I have ideas of animations I would like to create and it would really be beneficial if I could create and rig my own character model instead of having to rely on someone else to create them. This is a skill I want for my own personal projects however in my job role this would not be a necessity. My 3D modelling skills are also on a beginner’s level.

I have good team work skills at the moment as I don’t find it hard to listen to people’s ideas and following orders. However when it comes to leading a team, I could definitely improve. I have never led a team before but from knowing myself I know I would struggle.

I have a decent feel for movement and timing to make characters actions look believable. So far I believe my understanding of movement and timing is at an acceptable level but there is always room for improvement. Being able to pay close attention to detail will help me to find smaller errors that I otherwise would of missed and allow me to smoothen out my character animation.

SWOT

My strengths include 3D character animation and some basic modelling within the 3D animation

software Adobe Autodesk Maya. I am able to take a character rig and completely animate it with

understanding of weight, movement, timing etc. I am also able to create models of environmental

assets such as buildings, and furniture to place within a scene. I am also able to work well in a team,

as I can follow orders and collaborate in idea generation

My weaknesses include drawing, as I am only able to draw at a basic level. I am able to create 2D

characters but not at a level that would allow me to be able to create my own 2D animations at a

professional level.

I also take on more work than I can handle sometimes and end up having to rethink my project later.

If I have a set project I can work on this without too much worry, however if I have an open project I

tend to try to add too many things into the animation which makes it harder to finish the animation

in the set time frame.

An opportunity I may encounter is the ability to enter animation festivals to allow potential

employers to see my animations. I also want to join anatomy classes to help improve my drawing

skills and to learn the human body in a more detailed way. I also want to enlist in character

modelling tutorials to be able to create my own characters which will make it easier to apply my

ideas without the need of searching for a rig or someone else to create one for me.

Threats I may encounter is not being able to enter too many competitions due to limited funding as

of right now I do not make any income to be able to send my animations off. I can also tend to

procrastinate and put things off that I know I need to work on to work on something less important.

BrandingBusiness Card

I have created a simple business card as a foundation for future cards that I will be developing. It provides my name my role and some of my contact details. I have also added a QR code which will also link the viewer to my portfolio website.

WebsiteI have started the process of creating a website to advertise myself and my portfolio. I have created this website on Wix.com “http://richard3danimation.wix.com/portfolio”.

This is a base creation of the website where I will be hosting my showreel, and contact information.

ShowreelMy showreel consists of 3D character animation, I am lacking in any 2D animation which I will be working on in the future. I have used 3D character animations I have produced while in university. I will be adding personal projects onto this showreel after my university course. https:// vimeo.com/165133606

Networking To showcase the animations I have created whilst in university and for all future personal projects that I will be creating I am using the video-sharing site Vimeo. https://vimeo.com/richard3d

I use vimeo to upload the films I create while in university and for the personal animation projects that I will be creating. https://vimeo.com/richard3d

ReflectionAfter looking at what I want to achieve and the skills that I have, I believe I still need allot of improvement before I can work within a medium or large animation company. I will need to start small to hone my skills and improve my confidence within the animations I can produce. I will need to continue my studies of animation and the human body within my own time while actively trying to find an animation job if I have not already found one at the end of my university course. I will be entering regular competitions and online animation communities such as the “11 Second Club”. If I was to rate my overall skills on a scale from beginner, intermediate to advanced, I would definitely say I am on the beginner’s side.
