Scalance XM400 LMS Soundbrush

The patented LMS Soundbrush solu-tion by Siemens subsidiary LMS has also received the iF product design award for good industrial design. This is the first technology capable of vi-sualizing sound fields in 3D in real time.

Each year, the jury of iF International Forum Design confers the prestigious iF product design award on products it considers to embody exemplary de-sign. In total, in 2014 around 3,250 products were entered by internatio-nal companies of all sizes. 1,220 contributors in 17 categories were di-stinguished by the panel of judges made up of revered industrial desig-

The winning products are the distributed I/O Simatic ET200 eco PN, the Industrial Ethernet switch Scalance XM400, the Simotics FD motor series, the Sinamics G110M frequency con-verter and the LMS Soundbrush sound measurement system. The judges were impressed by the outstanding de-sign of the products taking into consi-deration assessment criteria such as design quality, treatment, uniqueness, functionality and ergonomics.

In all five of the winning contenders, product value has been successfully reflected in the design – by clear brand characteristic industrial design to-gether with carefully chosen materials and colors. The appearance of the Scalance XM400 clearly reflects both its uniqueness and its affinity with Si-matic controllers. The industrial design of the Simatic ET200 eco PN visuali-zes the transition between ruggedized distributed components and built-in ca-binet modules. Sinamics G110M em-phasizes both its dynamics and its close links to the electric motor by the use of specific design elements. With its Simotics FD electric motor, Sie-mens has reached a new level of in-dustrial design which expresses the outstanding dynamics, reliability and innovation of the product.

meant greater flexibility and higher production volumes for mymuesli, al-lowing even large-scale orders to be conveniently processed irrespective of the mixture variant. «

Every tin of muesli passes in sequence through the batching line with its 80 sta-tions – to create the ultimate individual mix

For individual as well as large-scale orders, the company relies on a bat-ching system with weighing techno-logy from Siemens. Each of the 80 batching devices is fitted with a Si-matic S7-200 microcontroller, a Si-warex MS (Microscale) module and a 5 kilo load cell for the platform scale. The components used quickly and precisely determine the weight. At the end of the process, the ordered end weight of the mixture is measu-red and documented in compliance with legal calibration requirements. The batching process is monitored using a Simatic Touch Panel, ensu-ring that any possible faults can be detected and remedied at an early stage. The automation solution has

Passau, Germany. Mymuesli, the first online supplier to specialize in indivi-dually customized muesli mixes, relies on Siemens technology. Since the company was founded in the spring of 2007, it has grown to such a degree that a modern automated batching so-lution seemed the logical next step to replace the previous manual mixing process. The technology comes from Siemens Industry.

The challenge for mymuesli lays in the wide choice of different ingredients customers can choose from to create their preferred individual muesli mix, with 80 separate ingredients adding up to a possible 566 thousand billion different combinations.

between drives, controllers and Hu-man-Machine-Interface devices, and enables ease of navigation and soft-ware maintenance. The comprehen-sive range of Siemens technology used in the machining and assembly line includes Simatic S7-300 control-lers, Sinamics S120 drives connec-ted via Profibus distributed links and operating panel MP277 with 10“ touch screen. Drives are connected to controllers via Profibus DP, with parameters and data sets being transmitted both ways. Traversing block control philosophy was used here, providing 64 pre-defined move-ments for each axis.

Brian Murphy from Orwin summari-zes the operational benefits now available for its automotive clients: “All control aspects of the brake pad production, machining and assembly were addressed. In the production of brake pads we have achieved signifi-

Orwin International, a leading automa-tion and special purpose machine buil-der in the United Kingdom, has mo-dernized its 18 axis brake pad machining and assembly line using automation and control software based on Totally Integrated Automati-on. The aim was to improve system and manufacturing flexibility for its end customers in the automotive industry. In addition, reliability and repeatability were improved, diagnostic information enhanced and overall production made more efficient.

Together with its Siemens Solution Partner Cleveland Systems, Orwin In-ternational relies on Totally Integrated Automation from Siemens to provide its customers with greater flexibility in production. ce. With its Simatic S7-1200 and the TIA Portal software platform, Sie-mens provides a portfolio that per-fectly fits the bill: “The Siemens pro-ducts and the new software platform significantly simplify both project en-gineering and programming”, says Rusterholz. In the truck, Simatic cont-rols the water supply, the automatic pressure control and the automati-cally lowerable ladders. A remote link from the company office over GPRS to the individual fire trucks allows the company to respond directly to any problems. For Rusterholz, this remo-

supply all the electrical components such as Sitop power supplies or safe-ty relays. Machine operation is pro-grammed via the TIA Portal. Stroke di-stances are automatically calculated on the basis of the tool mass and ben-ding angles. “Operators will need to make only minimal corrections to the angle depending on the material and temperature of the steel”, explains Mi-chael Aellig, head of bending machine production at Stierli-Bieger. Additional features to simplify the operator’s work now include an automatic feed function for large-scale parts such as railway tracks, and a variable and dy-namic stop used when producing smaller components. ... that the Swiss vehicle body maker Rusterholz has opted for reliable auto-mation solutions from Siemens to build fire trucks?

Carosserie Rusterholz AG is a Swiss company manufacturing fire trucks and building all of the vehicle itself. When it came to choosing a control system, the family-run business opted in favor of the Simatic-S7-1200 controller from Siemens. Chief Executive Karl Ruster-holz was keen to provide both opti-mum service for the customer and an automation solution from a single sour-

... that Siemens controllers are used to simplify the ultra-precise bending of centimeter-thick steel?

The Swiss company Stierli-Bieger AG has opted for the Simatic S7-1200 to update the control system used in its bending machines. The machines supplied by the world market leader in this field are used to manufacture products such as steel girders used for shipbuilding in countries like Chi-na, or railway tracks for the French TGV high-speed train. To ensure compliance with the stringent techni-cal and logistical demands involved, the company decided to opt for com-ponents from Siemens. Alongside the PLC, Siemens has been selected to

te diagnostic facility and the support provided by Siemens engineers add up to a key service factor with direct benefits for its customers: “If I have a problem I can simply ring for assis-tance”. «

AG with responsibility for program-ming the systems, is already planning the addition of further functions: “We are able to store 200 bending pro-grams in the PLC. The capability to individually update the data at the PC or collate data on an order-specific basis would be a great labor saving addition.“ «
