This year’s event has sessions tailored for those at all stages of their careers: from students and recent graduates (look out for the lightning bolt symbol), to those working on their first projects, or those looking for professional development op-portunities. Our programme is focused on looking forwards, towards inspiring and innovative change happening in the industry - it’s a fantastic time for film in Scotland right now.

The registration desk will be open to collect your pass between 10.00 and 14.00 from Thursday 21 February to Tuesday 26 February at the CCA, and between 09.00 and 18.00 from Wednesday 27 February to Friday 1 March at 29 Glasgow.

In 2017, she began commissioning Random Acts on behalf of Channel 4, exec’ing four Random Acts TV series for Channel 4 and commissioning and executive producing over 100 Random Acts shorts.

Sophie started her film career with producer Michael Kuhn, following a start in television with companies Tiger Aspect and Company Pictures. She then moved to StudioCanal joining the legal and business affairs team with a particular focus on acquisitions. Sophie joined Bankside Films as Head of Acquisitions and Development ahead of Cannes 2018.

Join producer Claire Mundell, The Cry novelist Helen FitzGerald, and Andrea Gibb (currently adapting the hit novel Elizabeth is Missing for STV) in a conversation with Hazel Marshall as they discuss these questions and more.

Caroline’s 20 year career within the film industry has evolved from running her first production company to her most recent combined roles as Strategic Development Executive for Screen Yorkshire and Talent Development Executive for Scottish Film Talent Network. Along this journey she has spent time as Head of Film at Creative England, managed the UK Film Council’s nationwide short film programme through her company Lifesize Pictures, and spent a year as Director of the Sheffield International Documentary Festival.
CREATIVE MEDIA SKILLS: INTRODUCTION TO THE ART DEPARTMENTClub 2909.30 - 12.30This workshop is aimed at delegates who want to learn more about taking on a role in the Art Department of a film. The session will cover: Introduction to the Art Department (the key job roles and how they in-tersect with other departments), storyboarding, set construction, model and prop making, and camera angles and lenses.

PURE DEAD BRILLIANT: A NEW ERA IN HORRORPresented by Screen Academy Scotland and The Creative Media Network29 Supper Club14.00 - 15.30For this session we will be looking at the changing attitudes of audiences and industry to horror cinema in recent years. Hosted by Michael Leader of Little White Lies, our panellists will explore the recent awards success of the horror genre, the changes in aesthetics, storytelling, and the subsequent response from audiences. Panellists include writer, director and actor Alice Lowe, Anna and the Apocalypse director John McPhail, Olivia Howe of The Final Girls Collective, and Sarah Daly of Scottish-based Hex Studios.
MARKET PLACE LIVE Hosted by Film London and Glasgow Film Office29 Supper Club16.00 - 18.00Market Place Live (MPL) is Film London’s innovative ‘live’ panel experience. Designed to illustrate the Film Value Chain through the use of a hypothetical film project chosen by the audience; the film is then developed, produced, sold and distributed all within 90 minutes! Going beyond the regular panel format, each member of the panel takes on a ‘role’ akin to their real life professions. As the event unfolds the panel have no prior warning of the scenarios they are confronted with, and they have to react ‘live’ to the problems they face. Market Place Live is a unique way for filmmakers to discover just how the Film Value Chain really works.Hosted by Olivier Kaempfer from Film London, panellists include producer Rachel Robey from Welling-ton Films, Robbi Allen from Screen Scotland, financier Sara Bonakdar from Head Gear Films, distribu-tion consultant Beatrice Neumann, and head of acquisitions and sales at Bankside Films, Sophie Green.
GLASGOW SHORT FILM FESTIVAL PRESENTS TAKING STOCK: A RANDOM ACTS CASE STUDYClub 2916.45 - 17.45Duncan Cowles’ short film Taking Stock was commissioned by Channel 4 for the Random Acts strand in 2017. A very funny reflection on the pitfalls of freelancing in the gig economy, it has screened at festivals from the USA to Ukraine, taken four awards and shown up on a few Short Film of the Year lists. Join Duncan in conversation with Random Acts commissioner Catherine Bray, as they discuss the process of bringing Duncan’s inner torment to screen in order for international audiences to laugh at him on multiple platforms.

This training will explore the source and function of unconscious thinking and explain how it can impact areas of the film industry, such as film programming and awards selection, diversity of staff and industry events, casting, education, and other areas of exhibition. It will then introduce techniques to address personal unconscious bias, and develop strategies to reduce the impact of unconscious bias at an organ-isational and institutional level.

VOD - THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT? Hosted by Creative Europe Desk UK29 Supper Club12.00 - 13.30With Netflix continuing to dominate headlines for its aggressive acquisition and distribution strategies, questions still remain around the opportunity for emerging talent on the platform; is there space here for the discovery of new filmmaking talent? And if not, then where? Whilst large platforms continue to focus on global reach, are new opportunities opening up for more localised and tailored digital offerings? Big streamers are increasingly commissioning local content, with new EU laws pushing VODs to devote at least 30% of their on-demand libraries to European productions. Do smaller, local platforms enable better reach for certain films? And can these platforms prove success-ful in launching and sustaining filmmaking careers? These are some of the questions that Alex Stolz will be putting to our panel of experts, including producer Rachel Robey from Wellington Films, Andreas Wildfang from EYZ Media, and Lee Shelton from Curzon.

FOCUS ON DOCUMENTARY: CASE STUDY OF LIVING THE LIGHT 29 Supper Club10.00 - 11.30Claire Pijman will discuss her latest work, documentary Living the Light, which portrays the late cine-matographer Robby Müller, using pictures and clips from his personal archive and interviews with some of his former colleagues, such as Wim Wenders, and Jim Jarmusch. Claire Pijman will talk about Müller’s influence on her works, with a focus on cinematography, but also how the general process of the docu-mentary took place. She will be accompanied by Robby’s wife, Andrea Müller, who has supported her greatly during the making of the film.
ORIGINAL VISIONS: FINDING YOUR VOICE IN FILM WITH UWSClub 2915.00 - 16.15Hosted by filmmaker and director of the UWS Creative Media Academy, Professor Nick Higgins, this panel will discuss and present approaches to nurturing original stories in original ways to create the filmmakers of tomorrow.Each panellist will provide examples of work that demonstrate the development of distinctive voices in the fields of fiction, documentary, and experimental cinema. Speakers include Paul Welsh (producer and development executive of the Scottish Film Talent Network), Flore Cosquer (Scottish Documentary In-stitute) and Sam Firth (filmmaker and MA Filmmaking lecturer at the University of the West of Scotland).

While discussion is all well and good, what action is actually being carried out on a larger scale to ensure a more diverse, equal, and safe work environment for us all? Hosted by Professor Inge Sørensen of University of Glasgow, this session will hear from industry vision-aries who are putting words into action. Panellists include: Filmmaker and Founder of Raising Films Hope Dickson Leach, Intimacy Coordinator Ita O’Brien, and Mikael Fellenius from Film i Vast.

Part 2: Making The Most Of Your Money (10.30 – 11.30)Focused on improving budgeting skills and exploring techniques for: Identifying how much money you need and when you need it, identifying risks in advance so you can manage them, and keeping control of your budget. This hands-on workshop is for up to six participants looking to get feedback on their budget/forecasts, therefore it is best suited for those who want help in preparing or improving their budget or cashflow forecasts for a specific project, funding application, or business. GIRLS ON FILM WITH ANNA SMITH Live podcast recording Club 2911.15 - 13.00Girls On Film is a ground-breaking film podcast from a female perspective. Hosted by leading critic and broadcaster Anna Smith, it features fresh, funny film reviews and chat with female experts and A-listers. This live recording of Episode 7 will feature witty and intelligent debate with guests including Allison Gardner, and will be followed by a Q&A with the audience. The panel will review films that are on current release and showing at GFF.Episodes 1-5 of Girls On Film are available on iTunes now.
