(iv) Abstract

Throughout the internship training, I learnt about the various kind of water treatment

plants in Klang Valley and the processes of treatment of water. I also stand a chance to complete

the drawing of the single membrane drawn in AutoCAD. After the drawing, Mr Tan JK taught

me about the drawing of P&ID of the water filtration system. The drawing is drawn in AutoCAD

also represent the product and the instrument of a respective system.

In addition, there were also site visit to sewage treatment plant at Kajang. Measured the

real UF system’s dimension according to the requirement which is the height, the length and the

width. After that, photo is taken as a reference to be draw in AUTOCAD. After the visit, I

finished the exact drawing of the UF system in AutoCAD.

Lastly, I also learn to draw a full and complete drawing of KRISTAL Standard UF

Systems which is MK-40 : 40- Module system. The UF system consists of 40 membranes with 3

main pipes which is Permeate, Reject and Feed Header to perform the Ultrafiltration in System.

And finished a P&ID on a Kristal Standard UF Systems along with its Legend and everything

related with this system is being done.

Chapter 1: Introduction

1.1 Industrial Training Scheme

Practical training is compulsory for all students From Faculty of Engineering and Built

Enviroment in Tunku Abdul Rahman University College in order to obtain a three credit hour

as a criteria to complete our degree programme. As an student from Mechanical Engineering,

they must undergone practical training from 26th of January 2015 to 2nd of May 2015 before

they were qualified to receive a degree in Mechanical Engineering. With the combination of

knowledge working experience during the 3 months training, students are required to

produce a written report.

1.2 Objective / Purpose of Industrial Training

The main objective of Industrial Training program is to expose students to actual working

environment and enhance their knowledge and skill from what they have learnt in the

college. Another purpose of this program is to instill the good qualities of integrity,

responsibility and self-confidence. All ethical values and good working practices must be

followed by student. It is also to help the students about the safety practices and regulations

inside the industry and to instill spirit of teamwork and good relationship between student

and other employees.

Preciously, I have learned lots of knowledge in various kind of machines, tools and also

safety features which is needed to follow in order to avoid any accident to happen. Currently,

engineers like us are able to produce a quotation, a draft of AutoCAD drawing and go visit

site to inspect the error of installation and the logic error in their PLC system. Finally, this

training also helps to assess student’s ability and competency in preparation to join workface

during completion of studies in Tunku Abdul Rahman University College.

1.3 Industrial Training Job Scope.

During this 14 weeks of internship in Kloberz Sdn Bhd, I had became the Project Engineer of

this company which assist the supervisor which is also the Director of the company which is Mr

Tan Jin Kiat. He gave me a lot of responsible in handling various kind of jobs relating to

engineering field which mainly on Water Treatment Plant which is STP and WTP.

Due to the lack of engineering based employee in his company, he gave me trust and responsible

to a very huge project which amounting total amount of millions in order to assist him in

completing the project in time. One of the largest project that I had a chance to enroll and plays a

part is project in Cameron Highland named as Ulu Jelai Hydroelectric Project which sums at an

amount of rm4, 000,000 in total.

During this period of handling the project, I was given an opportunities to inspect all the P & ID

which is the electrical component and the flow of the water tanks and treatment plant in the

project. Due to the hectic working hours of Mr Tan and the trust he had on me, he let me inspect

the components and the flow of the whole water treatment system and only need to report to him

everyday to see the progress.(Please refer to the appendix for the picture of the P&ID). From

component listing and amendment of the various parts in order for the mechanical parts to works

effectively with the logic of the PLC due to a lot of Level Switch to detect the level of water in

the tank.

Next, during this internship period , Mr Tan also told me to do a lot of data analysis of the water

treatment plant mainly on Huber Technology, from Denmark which can be found at the website

of www.huber.se. This huge company supplies a lot of product which is expensive yet it is very

reliable and long lasting compared to products from China. Due to the less knowledge and the

product is too expensive, thus it is not popular among in Malaysia. Mr Tan have the vision to

spread Huber Products in Malaysia. Products like ROTAMAT Fine Screen and Rotary Drum

Fine Screen is the most popular product among Huber Technology.(Please refer to appendix for

better image of the product.

4

Page 5: Industrial Training Report

I was brought by Mr Tan to meet an Engineer from Huber which originated from Germany to

visit sitres with us. His name is Mr Martin Burger. Although he doesn’t speak a good English,

yet he shares a lot of valuable experience with us about the machine of the waste water treatment

plant and the prospective of water treatment in the future world. This is because water is an

essential for every human being.(Photo on site visits will be attached in the Appendix).

After listing all the components from the Ulu Jelai Hydroeletric Project, Mr Tan has told me to

do Quotation on every needed parts in the water treatment to get the best price with the best

quality product. Doing quotation and identify also choosing the best manufacturer for pumps,

sensors and so on has been a challenge for me. The challenge was overcome when Mr Tan taught

me the criteria to choose the best parts to be used in our project and it is worth the price in order

for the hydroelectric dam to work out effectively. This is because the water generated will

generate electric and in the same time will generate clean water to the resident nearby Cameron

Highland.(Refer to Appendix for more photos about Ulu Jelai Hydroelectric Project)

As the Project Engineer in the company, I was requested by Mr Tan to do enquires about

products in water treatment plant. This is because there are a lot of more and new products in the

market which we couldn’t get enough information due to lack of communication with the

supplier. Thus, Mr Tan requested me to do data analysis and communicate with the existing

customer to do know more and know well of new product which can overcome the conventional

way of treating water neither sewage or water treatment plant.

Throughout the internship period, Mr Tan gave me the full responsibility on drafting using

AutoCAD 2009. He gave me almost everything from editing or gave me an idea of the whole

Ultrafiltration system which consisit of membrane from 4 until to 16 units in a skid. By using

skills learnt from the college and also some studies on AutoCAD. I manage to obtain Mr Tan’s

confidence to let me edit every single AutoCAD drawing and it is being doing effectively. Thank

you to Mr Tan because my AutoCAD skill have been greatly improved and I am able to drawing

a lot of things or product which is neat and very detailed.(Please refer to the appendix for more

picture of the drawing made by myself.

Chapter 2: Ulu Jelai Hydroelectric Project.

14

Page 15: Industrial Training Report

The Ulu Jelai Hydroelectric Project is a 372 MW hydropower development on the Bertam River,

Pahang. The scheme is expected to produce an annual energy supply of 326 GWh. The main

features of the project are an 88-metre high, 740,000 cubic metre RCC dam with service and

emergency ungated spillways, provision for theflushing of sediment from the reservoir, diversion

weirs on the Telom and Lemoi rivers for the transfer of water to Susu Dam, an intake tower,

power tunnels and an underground powerhouse cavern. Construction work for the project

commenced in late 2010 and has been scheduled to complete by end of 2016. The first contract

package involving the access roads and associated earthworks is in progress. Meanwhile for the

second contract package, construction of the dam and the various tunnels leading to the

underground power station has just begun.

The power waterway which extends from the power intake structure to the power station

basically consists of a 9.5 metre diameter horseshoe-shaped and 4.2 kilometre long unlined

headrace tunnel, which includes a 40 metres long concrete lined rock trap; a 5.2 metre diameter

by 173 metres high concrete-lined pressure shaft; 5.2 metre diameter horseshoe-shaped by 86

metres long concrete lined pressure tunnel; 5.2 metre diameter, 10 metres long steel-lined, single

penstock embedded in concrete; steel bifurcation; and 3.75 metre diameter steel-lined, dual

penstock, embedded in concrete. The generating units (2 x 186 MW) would be housed in an

underground power station cavern, approximately 82 m x 22.5 m x 35.5 m. Other underground

facilities include the transformer cavern of approximately 34 m x 17 m x 17 m, downstream

surge chamber of approximately 40 m x 14 m x 35 m, associated service tunnels, access tunnels,

and ventilation tunnels, and a concrete lined 7.7 metre diameter horseshoe-shaped tail race tunnel

of approximately 1,720 metres in length. The scheme also includes the diversion of water from

the Telom and Lemoi river catchments through the 3-metre diameter transfer tunnels, with

respective lengths of 8,500 metres and 7,500 metres to the Susu Dam storage. Apart from

presenting the project key features and how it works, the talk also touched on the excavation of

the tunnels, which is a major part of the construction work. The construction of the Main Access

Tunnel (MAT) involving the excavation of a top heading in soft material using canopy tubes,

steel ribs and shotcrete for support was highlighted. The images below shows the photos of one

of the area which is the MAT, Multi-Purpose Tunnel area to be place.

Pictures of MAT Area.

15

Page 16: Industrial Training Report

Other than Mat area, there are are 9 Areas under control of our company to place water treatment

system, water filtration system and water storage tank. Each area plays their own part in treating

water and also filtrate water to supply to fire machine bay hall.

Area 1 : Tailrace Dewatering Chamber

This area consist of a surge chamber which is a place where the raw water from mountain was

suck in the tank ready to be stored and treated for various uses. It uses the centrifugal pump to

pump water into the Intermediate Tank Chiller Area in order to allow water to flow into the tank

to be treated.

Area 2 and Area 3 : Centrifugal Pump, Multi Pump.

16

Page 17: Industrial Training Report

In this two area, we havemultiple pumps to pump water into Raw Water Tank MAT Area. Yet,

before it enters the tank, it will go though ARKAL Screen Filter to filter off those large particles

before going to the raw water tank.

Area 4 : Raw Water Tank MAT Area.

The raw water pumped from the Surge Chamber will divided into a lot of areas to be used for a

lot of different reason. In Raw Water Tank MAT Area, there will some of the water to be

supplied into Machine Hall and Fire Hydrant. Some are also feed into Generation Control

Building Area.

Area 5 : Raw Water Tank Switchyard Area

The water from this tank is obtained from the Raw Water Tank MAT Area using pumps from

raw water pumping stations.

Area 6 : Potable water tank Switchyard Area

Potable means useable water or drinkable water which is describe that the water is ready to

use.The potable water means the water is already treated and can be used for drinking and other

usage purpose.

Area 7 : Machine Hall Service Bay

In this area it consists of two tanks to be filled. This is because this area is the most important

area to generate power and electricity. It also provides water for the emergency hydrant of the

surrounding area. Thus, the tank is make sure to be fully filled and also there is no error in

indicating their logic error in the PLC.

Area 8 : Potable Water Tank MAT Area

There are one water tank in this area which is supplied by Raw Water Tank MAT Area where the

treated water is passed into this tank. This tank will suppose water into the Potable Treatment

Plant.

Area 9 : Potable Treatment Plant

17

Page 18: Industrial Training Report

This area is the main place where all the water is being treated. There are a lot of machines,

pumps and tanks with also the dosing pump in order to clear the water and also allows the water

to be treated inside it. Without this area, every water in this Ulu Jelai Hydroelectric Project will

not be able to work and progress.

Chapter 3: Conclusions & Recommendations

Conclusion

Throughout the whole industrial training, I learnt about the Huber Heat Exchanger RO

Win. Getting to know the purpose of heat exchanger also how to it works which helps to heat up

and save energy for the respective area.Other than that, I also study on a Huber product which is

the Belt Screen Escamax. It uses a perforated plate to do the screening in deep water channel.

Made a full presentation of Huber product which is the Escamax. The detail to be

included in the presentation is introduction of the product, principle of operation and the video of

the related product. Continues with the presentation to include the size of the system which is

always depends on the water quality and the size of the particle in the water. This presentation

greatly improved my knowledge on Huber products.

Drawn a full and complete drawing of KRISTAL Standard UF Systems which is MK-50 :

20- Module system. The UF system consists of 20 membranes with 3 main pipes which is

Permeate, Reject and Feed Header to perform the Ultrafiltration in System

Get to know and understand products from ARKAL FILTRATION SYSTEM and

knowing the difference and the usage of each filter. There are a lot of types of categories which

is Screen, Manual, Hydrocyclone, and Media and lastly is the SPIN KLIN which is all under

ARKAL Filtration SYSTEM.

Recommendations

There were few suggestions that I would like to suggest to the company. The company

should emplyoe more workers to help them in working with their big projects. This is because

there are a lot of processes and maintenance needed in their companies. Due to lack of

workforce, there are a lot of projects being abandoned and given to other water treatment

company tyo take over. This will cause the profit of the company to be reduced

In addition, the company should implement a time stamp system. This is to ensure every

of the employee doing their jobs effectively and didn’t lazy on working on their tasks. In my

period, there are no time stamping system. Thus some of the colleagues does not come in work

on time. This causes the production rate and the project on hand to be delayed. This will ruin the

image of the company.

Lastly, the company should do more advertisement and amend the store to be more

strategic places. This is because the location of the warehouse is so far that it takes a lot of time

to retrieve the stock and the time left is not sufficient to approach customer to help with the

installation and maintenance.
