ELEVANCE CLEAN® 1200 – INDUSTRIAL METAL CLEANING
Grease and oil removal is important in different
industries that require metal cleaning, especially
in machining metal parts as a prelude to surface
treatment, maintenance work, and machine and
parts cleaning. The efficiency and effectiveness of
the cleaning material directly impacts how well
these soils are removed. However, the scarcity
of products that perform adequately while also
meeting challenging VOC limits and safety concerns
poses a challenge to the industry. To date, achieving
compliance and performance has been difficult
with sustainably sourced solvent alternatives
due to inferior solvent efficacy, solvent (product)
oxidative instability (as with methyl soyate), instrinsic
high volatile organic content, or supply and price
fluctuations (as with d-limonene).
The superior performance and VOC-exempt* status of
Elevance Clean® 1200 allows formulators to overcome
the cleaning shortcomings resulting from tighter
restrictions on VOCs.

The Elevance Clean® 1200 product line consists of two products containing the same active material. Elevance Clean® 1200XA is a cleaning ingredient without added fragrance. Elevance Clean® 1200HT is Elevance Clean® 1200XA with fragrance added. The technical performance of both products is identical.
All references to Elevance Clean® 1200 in this document refer to both products.
Elevance Clean® 1200
Elevance Clean® 1200 enables formulators to develop products that meet their customers’ most challenging cleaning needs while fulfilling their requirements for VOC-exempt status. With Elevance Clean® 1200, formulators can:

Elevance Clean® 1200 is proven safe for a number of metals and key alloys, including aviation-grade aluminum, galvanized steel, stainless steel and clad aluminum. In addition, Elevance Clean® 1200 degreases more effectively and rapidly even in non-corrosive or neutral pH solutions, requiring less time in metal cleaning than a range of traditional and bio-based solvents, such as Aromatic 150, d-limonene, methyl soyate and dibasic esters.

Elevance Clean® 1200 is an extremely effective ingredient that can be formulated to boost cleaning products’ abilities to remove many common and hard-to-remove soils. Target soils include but are not limited to:

A standardized test of equal weight solvent microemulsions demonstrates that Elevance Clean® 1200 shows powerful degreasing kinetics relative to existing industry benchmarks. The Elevance Clean® 1200 VOC free semi-aqueous degreaser more rapidly removed cured lithium complex grease from stainless steel than its conventional solvent counterparts.

Testing Methodology
Lithium Grease Removal mechanical cleaning Valvoline General Multi-Purpose Grease – NLGI #2 Grade Lithium EP Grease. 3"x 3" 0.3-mm thick film centered on 3"x 6" stainless steel plate. 15 h cure @ 160 °C then 2 h @ 200 °C. 10 mL formulation-imbibed cellulose sponge. Gardner scrub apparatus is cycled to achieve 80% removal (visual). Image analysis quantification.
Petroleum Grease Removal A standard petroleum grease was prepared from 25 grams 15W40 weight motor oil, 25 grams “STA-Grease” from Conoco Oil Company, 75 grams heptane, 75 grams methylene chloride and 0.2 gram oil soluble dye. 25 mm ×75 mm glass slides were coated (25 mm × 30 mm on each side) and dried. Slides were immersed into a stirred beaker of RT test solution. The time to complete soil removal was measured in triplicate trials. Average times reported.
