It is sad to note that given the discovery of the endo-cannabinoid system in the mid-1980’s, only 1 in 7 medical schools today even mentions this – much less teaches doctors anything about the ECS.

Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, an Israeli researcher, better known as the grandfather of cannabis research – was the first to isolate the THC molecule in 1964.

Dr. Mechoulam mentions that perhaps 40% of all pharmaceutical medications may be made obsolete with the further research and clinical development of cannabis and cannabinoid based medications.

Drug Abuse Expert: CBD is ‘Safe,’ Has Medicinal Benefits

A key drug abuse expert has come out publicly saying that CBD is safe and may have “therapeutic value for a number of medical conditions,” giving ammunition to advocates in favor of rescheduling or de-scheduling cannabis (including hemp) and bolstering businesses focused on cannabidiol. Nora Volkow, director of the US National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), made the comments in an editorial published by the Huffington Post. She said her group will address prior research barriers and expedite progress into “this potentially valuable compound, as well as other components of the marijuana plant.”

She added that CBD especially “may be poised to make great inroads into our pharmacopoeia.”

Current Legislation● Medical marijuana is legal in 23 US

states plus the District of Columbia

● Recreational marijuana is legal in 4 states, plus Washington DC

● 15 states have “CBD-Only” laws

● Many states (approx. 26) have passed state level legislation allowing farmers to grow hemp, once federal restrictions are lifted

● Research crops of hemp have been planted in the US this year with harvests expected this fall




Prior Court Rulings Favoring Hemp Food Products in America

In the late 1990’s, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) tried to outlaw all hemp food products from entering America – as Canadian hemp seed and hemp oil products were gaining popularity with health enthusiasts. The DEA claimed that these hemp products contained trace amounts of THC and other “potentially dangerous” cannabinoids.

The Hemp Industries Association (HIA) took the DEA to court to allow hemp food products – that contained trace amounts of the psychoactive cannabinoid THC into America.

In the end, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled in favor of the HIA, and today hemp seed, hemp oil and hemp protein powder are readily found on health food store shelves here in the US.

The world is seeing the benefits of non-psychoactive cannabinoids - recently Brazil has allowed natural botanical CBD products into their country for therapeutic use involving refractory epilepsy patients. About 750,000 patients are thought to have RE in Brazil.

Natural botanical hemp-based cannabinoid extracts may play a significant role in future health and wellness – this represents a evolutionary quantum leap forward in human healthcare.

Previously we have mentioned Dr Mechoulam as the grandfather of cannabis research. He has recently been featured on a documentary where he mentions that each of us have a different internal endo-cannabinoid profile. Further that this profile - the combinations of our internal cannabinoids - may distinguish our individual personalities…
