Iron Clads- heavily armored, steam powered warships, led directly to the warships of today.
-most famous in civil war was the casemate ironclad (built to protect the guns and crew from enemy)
-Southern ironclads were usually called rams because they were built with strong, sharp bows that would ram into and sink enemy ships-a monitor ironclad had a small number of heavy guns and was a low freeboard ship, which means the deck was very close to the water
-first ironclads were built by the French in the Crimean War in 1850, used to attack enemy forts on land
-most famous ironclad battle was between the Monitor and the Virginia March 9,, 1862-smaller, river boat styled ironclads were used on the Mississippi River in the Civil War
