Indus3Es – Industrial Energy and Environment Efficiency
The Indus3Es project, in the frame of Horizon 2020
TOPIC EE-18-2015: New technologies for utilization of
heat recovery in large industrial systems, considering the
whole energy cycle from heat production to
transformation, delivery and end use.
Large quantities of waste heat are continuously rejected
from industries. Most of this waste energy, however, is
of low-quality and is not practical or economical to
recover it with current technologies. The Indus3Es
project will develop an innovative Absorption Heat
Transformer (AHT) for this purpose, focused on low
temperature waste heat recovery. The Indus3Es System
will effectively recover and revalorize almost 50% of the
low temperature waste heat, increasing quality of the
waste source to the required temperature and reusing it
again in the industrial process.
This system has the potential of saving up to 20% of
energy consumption and an increase of energy efficiency
by 25%, leading to have astonishing environmental and
economic benefits.
TECNALIA RESEARCH & INNOVATION (TECNALIA) is a private, independent, nonprofit research organization. TECNALIA’s goal is to generate and develop business opportunities through applied technological research and innovation, and does so in its seven Business Divisions: Energy & Environment, Health, ICT/European Software Institute, Industry & Transport, Innovation Strategies, Sustainable Construction, and Technological Services. TECNALIA will be the Coordinator of the Indus3Es and will be mainly involved in the development of the innovative Absorption Heat Transformer (AHT), in its optimization and performance at the demonstration site and, in particular, in the thermal design of the AHT for its operation. TECNALIA will also develop the Life Cycle Assessment and the material corrosion analysis for the technology, contributing to the definition of the optimized Indus3ES system and replicability.
Indus3Es project Kick-off-meeting - IZMIT, Turkey, 8-9 October 2015
TECHNISCHE UNIVERSITÄT BERLIN (TU Berlin) is one of Germany’s largest and most internationally renowned technical universities with almost 31 000 students and circa 100 programs. Energy Systems and Sustainable Resource Management, is one of these six core research priorities at TU Berlin. TU Berlin will be the main responsible for the development and validation of the AHT prototype. TU Berlin will as well participate in the design and performance assessment of the pilot plant.

TECHNION – Israel Institute of Technology has the necessary expertise and knowledge to design the AHT together with Tecnalia and TU Berlin. Within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, great emphasis is placed on multidisciplinary research, which is carried out both within the department, and in collaboration with other scientific and technological departments. Technion is Israel’s primary technological university and the country’s predominant center of engineering and applied research.
AIGUASOL - Founded in 1999, AIGUASOL provides engineering, consultancy and research services, promoting innovative solutions to reduce the impact associated with energy consumption. AIGUASOL contribution focuses on the development of the Indus3Es system and the exploitation of the project results.
BS NOVA - The company belongs to the Baelz group which ranks among the leading companies in Germany in the field of measuring, control, and heat technology. In the Indus3Es project BS Nova will be the manufacturer of the HT to be developed and he will be as well a consultant to the engineers in charge of optimising the design.
TÜPRAŞ is Turkey’s largest industrial enterprise, with 28.1 m ton crude processing capacity. Tüpraş has four refineries operating in four different cities with 4780 employees. Tüpraş has a certified R&D center which is given in line with Turkish Law “Supporting Research and Development Activities. Tüpraş will provide inputs as an end-user and stakeholder, detailed information about the owned plants and the related processes, and the required data for the realization of the pilot plant. Tüpraş is responsible for installing, testing and evaluating the final system on its premises.
REPSOL is an integrated global energy company with vast sector experience. Repsol carries out Upstream and Downstream activities across the world. Repsol believes that through innovation it can create a new energy model. The presence of the Repsol (together with Tüpraş and Fertinagro) as direct beneficiary and end-user of the developed system will be essential to ensure a successful development of the envisaged systems, guarantying from the very beginning that all the requirements and particular boundary conditions that are given in the industrial processes are taken into account.
FERTINAGRO is a company belonging to the business group Tervalis Desarrollo, which is a leader supplier of fertilizers for agriculture in Spain, with production plants in Spain – Teruel province (Teruel, Utrillas, Escucha, Sarrión), Castellón and Huelva, and in France – Misson. Fertinagro, together with Repsol and Tüpraş, will be involved as end-user.
CIRCE FOUNDATION (CENTRE OF RESEARCH FOR ENERGY RESOURCES AND CONSUMPTION) is an independent Research Centre to create and develop innovative solutions and scientific/technical knowledge and to transfer them to the business sector in the field of energy. CIRCE’s mission is to drive forward improvements in energy efficiency and to spread the use of renewable energy by means of the development of R+D+i activities and training actions, thereby contributing to a sustainable development. Circe will contribute to the replication studies of the Indus3Es system in different industries, aiming at developing an optimized low temperature waste heat recovery system based on AHT technology suitable for different industrial processes.
PNO INNOVATION, PART OF THE PNO INNOVATION B.V. is specialised in Innovation Management and funding, providing support services to private and public organizations in Innovation processes, Technology Transfer, IT solutions and funding for research, development and innovation. PNO, as innovation and technology transfer organisation, will lead dissemination and communication activities and will support companies in exploitation issues, ensuring the project impact among the stakeholders and preparing a favourable framework for future exploitation of the project results, assuring alignment and smooth flows of information and providing close integration with Europe’s research and innovation programmes, platforms and organisations.
