2. The Five Basic Typesof Water Tanks

  • 1 . Leg Tank/Multi-Column
  • a ) Double Ellipsoidal
  • b ) Torus Bottom
  • 2 . Pedesphere/Waterspheroid(single pedestal)
  • 3 . Fluted Column/Hydropillar(single pedestal)
  • 4 . Composite( single pedestal)
  • 5 . Ground Storage Tank/Flat Bottom
  • a ) Reservoir
  • b ) Standpipe

3. Leg/Multi-Column

  • 1.Double Ellipsoidal (DE)-Smaller sized leg tanks (50,000 to 150,000 gallons) are referred to as DEs. This term means the roof to side shell connection is ellipsoidal and the bottom to side shell connection is also ellipsoidal, hence double ellipsoidal.
  • Torus Bottom (TB) - Larger sized leg tanks (200,000
  • gallon and larger) have a torus bottom shape to them,
  • hence they are commonly referred to as TBs.

4. Double Ellipsoidal (DE) 5. Double Ellipsoidal (DE)

  • Riser transcends directly
  • into the bottom of the tank bowl

39. Corrosion A natural electro-chemical activity where a processed compound of materials (steel) returns to its lowest possible energy state (iron oxide). 40. 41. Corrosion Occurs Through the Action of an Electrochemical CellFour Elements: 1 . Anode2 . Cathode 3 . Metallic Path 4 . Electrolyte 42. Protective Coatings 43. Coatings Provide Corrosion Protection inTwo Different Ways: 1 . Barrier Protection Inhibit the corrosionprocess by eliminating the presence ofelectrolyte (most paint films) 2 . Galvanic Protection Sacrificial or cathodic protection (zinc-rich primer) 44. Surface Preparation is vital in cleaning the surface of all contaminants and it also provides a profile for the paint film to anchor into (i.e. good adhesion). 45. Paint Consists of Three Main Components: 1 . Resin2 . Pigment 3 . Solvent 46. Generic Coating Types Typically Used inthe Water Tank Industry: 1. Epoxy(Two Component) Used for primer, intermediate and interior immersion Hard, abrasive resistantChalk & fade when exposed to ultraviolet light 2. Zinc(Two Component) Used for primer on interior or exterior Galvanic/sacrificial properties 3. Polyurethanes(Two Component) Used for exterior of tanks.Strong color/gloss retention performance 47. Generic Coating Types Typically Used inthe Water Tank Industry:(continued)4. Acrylics(One Component) Used for exterior repainting/overcoating existing tanksGood adhesion propertiesImposes least amount of stress to older paint 5. Aluminum Alkyds(One Component) Used for exterior repainting/overcoating existing tanksStill some of these tanks around (Older tanks)Utilizes aluminum flake pigment Has chromeappearance to it 48.
