Is ‘an inspirational teacher’ the same as being ‘outstanding’

using Ofsted criteria?

(Ofsted 2010) Features of an outstanding lesson:

• In addition to the features of very good teaching (below), difficult ideas or skills, taught in an inspiring & very effective way indicate excellent teaching.

• Assessment & teaching that enables pupils to play a very strong part in making & recognising improvement in their work is likely to be excellent. Almost all pupils have clear understanding of where to focus their efforts to improve.

• All pupils engrossed in work & make much better progress than could be expected. Achievement very high, teaching consistently challenging & interesting stemming from excellent subject knowledge.

• Match to pupils' individual needs is sensitive & TAs support learning very well.

• Assessment information used directly in planning. • Feedback on work (oral & marking) is well-focused, diagnostic &

helps pupils to see how to improve. Pupils are helped to judge the success of their own work & to set targets for improvement.

• Learning is active & creative (collaborative tasks, talk for learning, investigation, problem solving, variety of engaging & motivating activity)

How can I teach this class?!5 Students arrive, 1 sits on a chair, 2 on desks. They ignore the work

on the board

4 more students arrive. One looks at the work on board. ‘P’ says loudly he is thirsty & tired. Most are without pens or books.

4 students are chatting, some have books out. ‘J’ takes out bottle of juice.

‘J’ spills juice over ‘P’ & they argue loudly. Class continue to chat.

5 students get uo to wave enthusiastically at friends out of window

2 students pack away.

1 student has got out mp3 player

Role play

Page 24: Induction Programme for Secondary NQTs – MFL ( NT001F) 14 June 2010 (session 3) Marwell Hotel

Role play!

• Parent:• Your child has not got

into the top set and as a result can not do German next year.

• You think he/she is very clever.

• You have business connections with Germany.

• Parent:• Your child has been

given a detention unfairly. You dont get to spend much time with your child after work and they dont often tell you things so this must be true.

Page 25: Induction Programme for Secondary NQTs – MFL ( NT001F) 14 June 2010 (session 3) Marwell Hotel

Role play!

• Student:• You have not done

your homework / coursework. Home is pretty chaotic at the moment but there is absolutely no way you are going to let anyone find this out.

• Student:• You have been rude

to the teacher. You don’t understand his / her accent anyway and they are always picking on you. Besides French is stupid isn’t it?
