Foreword Dear Parents/Guardians Each year at the Royal Alexandra and Albert School, we look to find more ways to help our learners succeed through their level 2 studies (GCSEs and B-TEC and OCR Nationals). This year we thought a booklet outlining the course details of each exam subject, along with the breakdown of the course, the coursework hand-in times and those all important exam dates would go some way to preparing our learners, along with yourselves for their forthcoming examination period. Accompanying these pages we have included the details we thought you and each learner would need to know in order to best prepare themselves, including some revision tips, details of Special Educational Needs procedures, a calendar for personalised planning and relevant contact details. This information is available not only as a paper copy but electronically through the school web-site (www.raa-school.org.uk) and on CD-Rom. We hope you will let us know any areas for improvement within the booklet as we foresee this as a part of the Key Stage 4 induction programme for years to come. Always ensuring you of our best intentions

Art & Design (1027) Course Overview

During this two year course learners complete four projects and one externally set exam project. Coursework accounts for 60% of the final GCSE grade, leaving 40% for the externally set assignment. In Year 10 three projects are completed. The main outline of the project will be given by the classroom teacher but learners are encouraged to develop and take ownership of their project producing unique and interesting studies. The fourth coursework project is completed in Year 11 and we set the project as a Mock Exam, allowing learners the opportunity to see what the final exam will be like. The exam paper allows eight weeks to complete preparatory studies in a sketch book and learners will have two days in exam conditions to complete a final design based on their studies. All projects must cover four Assessment Objectives. These are carefully explained to learners and they are given regular tutorials to check that the objectives are being covered and that learners are up-to-date.

Course Title Music (1426) 2009 - 2011

Course Overview and Summary of Assessment Performing (30% - 15% for one solo performance and 15% for one ensemble performance). Learners work together in ensembles and individually as soloists to develop key skills in performing, raise levels of attainment and develop confidence and musicians and people. It does not matter what instruments learners play as each performance is marked using the same criteria, and any combination of instruments/voices can be catered for at GCSE level. This element is assessed internally and moderated externally. Composing (30%) Using either conventional notation software (Sibelius), music studio software (Cubase) or other musical notation or a thorough written commentary, learners are required to submit two compositions and recordings (it is not a requirement that learners perform their own compositions) linked to two of the different Areas of Study (shown below). Learners will have opportunities to research material relevant to the style they choose to compose in and experiment with compositions; however, the final score / commentary must be completed in the classroom under teacher supervision. The maximum time allowed for each supervised composition is 10 hours. This element is also assessed internally and moderated externally. Listening and Appraising (40%) For this element of the exam, learners develop their listening and appraising skills through the study of music across a variety of styles and genres. The content for this element is grouped into four Areas of Study, each of which contains three set works. Area of Study 1 covers Baroque, Classical and Romantic Music. Area of Study 2 covers Atonal Music, Jazz and Minimalism Music. Area of Study 3 covers Blues, Rock and Dance Music. Area of Study 4 covers Folk Music, Indian Music and African Music. This study culminates in a formal listening and written GCSE exam in the May of Year 11.

Other Information Skills required:

As with all GCSE examinations, Music involves a lot of hard work. In order to achieve the best possible grades, learners need to be committed and be prepared to take the initiative in personal practice and other work outside of the classroom. Learners are expected to participate in appropriate extracurricular activities, both during lunchtimes and/or after school, and lead by example for the younger learners in school. Although you do not need to be able to read music, it helps if you can. Everyone is taught how to read music regardless of current musical ability, with music theory work differentiated appropriately for the more advanced musicians. You need to be able to play an instrument or sing in order to cope with the practical elements of the course.

Future opportunities:

Music GCSE leads on naturally to A level, BTEC or GNVQ courses in Music and / or Music Technology as well as Performing or Expressive Arts. It also opens many doors to non-specialised courses – having a qualification in Music shows that you are sociable, can work in a team, be creative and are able to show commitment to a task or team.

Course Overview Design and Technology is a National Curriculum subject and the syllabi that we follow has been approved under the national GCSE criteria for Design and Technology. The course now involves a ‘controlled assessment task’ which has replaced coursework. This involves the designing and manufacturing of a product within a structured and monitored environment. It involves the completion of approximately 20 pages of A3 and the making of the design proposal. The controlled assessed task will be completed by December of year 11. Each course leads to the award of a GCSE on the scale A* - G. There is no tiering of candidates All technology subjects have a sizeable input of practical work, I.C.T. and theory. All three courses involve assessment of - Coursework 60% Final Exam 40% There are two assessment objectives: (this does not apply to food tech) Designing 40% Candidates are assessed on their ability to design products using suitable specifications by applying their knowledge to design and communication skills. Making 60% Candidates are assessed on their ability to produce work to a suitable specification by applying their knowledge and understanding of relevant processes, materials and techniques to their skilled use of materials, tools and other equipment. Marks are awarded over 5 categories (total 90 max). The designing and manufacturing categories each carry a maximum of 32 marks each. It is in the pupils’ interests to equip themselves with appropriate basic necessities (e.g. drawing equipment, graphics pens etc) so that they can work outside school time. We are able to offer 3 examination courses: -

Learning Support The role of the Learning Support Department changes slightly once learners reach Key Stage 4. It is no longer felt appropriate for learners to be withdrawn for literacy or numeracy group support. Instead the support required is constructed around the needs of the individual, the year group and suggestions made by Heads of Department. Parents of learners who have a statement of educational need will have already discussed with the SENCO, at the Year 9 review, how best to use the support available to meet their child’s needs. The SENCO will then implement any support changes in readiness for Year 10. Support available • This year we are piloting a Learning Mentor Scheme in which learners, targeted by the Key Stage

Co-ordinator and SENCO as requiring individual support will meet a designated LSA on a weekly basis. The use of time spent will be according to the needs of the individual learner.

• In class support continues to be a key mechanism of support at KS4. Areas of English and Maths are supported but we also endeavour to cover as many of the option choices as we can.

• The Learning Support Department, in conjunction with the Science Department, are running a support group for learners requiring greater focus in key areas of the science curriculum.

• The SENCO also runs a prep support club as part of the 4pm to 5pm activity scheme. Examination Support At KS4 the greatest concern for parents and learners alike is what exams will be taken and “passed” in the final two years at school. Obviously exams taken will be decided by individual departments but the Learning Support Department makes every effort to support learners in order to achieve their potential. The Department takes a watching brief over the learners to gain insight into how learners cope under exam stresses. In some cases it soon becomes apparent that some learners will need extra support. Monitoring to ensure learners have the support they need • All learners complete reading and spelling assessments • Learners with scores at levels significantly below their chronological age will then be referred to the

LSA team for more in-depth assessment.. • Information gathered from LSAs, teachers etc with regard to learners struggling with the increased

work load. • In consultation with Key Stage Co-ordinator support may be put in place for times of coursework

demands. • Should the need arise, using assessment results as evidence of need, the SENCO will apply to the

examination boards for concessions to be made. These may include: extra time, prompts, readers scribes etc.

Above all our aim is to support learners through their GCSEs
