Indoor Air Pollution
By: Holly Kendall, Maddy Margulies, and Lindsay Zamites
Problem
• Things from around the house are causing pollution in the air inside of the house. The pollution can come from many different sources.
Where it occurs
• It occurs inside of buildings, homes, offices.
Sources of I.A.P.• Cleaning Supplies• Heating,• Furnaces,• Fireplaces,• Chimneys• Pesticides• Radon - cancer causing natural radioactive gas that you can't see,
smell, or taste
• Carbon Monoxide - colorless, odorless, tastless, highly toxic gas that can be trapped inside the house from cars being started in garages when the door is not open...fireplaces..etc.
• Smoke ( from cigarretes)• Lead Paint
Immediate Effects
• irritation of eyes, throat, nose, dizziness, fatigue, headaches
• Asthma• humidifier fever• hypersensitivity pneumonitis• factors for having reactions
– age– medical conditions before– individual sensitivity
Long-Term Effects
• some effects show up years after exposure, or after exposure is repeated many times– respiratory diseases– heart diseases– cancer
How Technology Influenced the Problem
• Common household appliences such as stoves and heaters let gases into homes/buildings
• If gases are not released from these places, can cause problems
Do the Negatives Way out the Positives?
• Negatives of I.A.P.– Releases harmful
gases and substances– Causes immediate and
long term heath affects• Diseases
• Positives of I.A.P.– Moves technology
forward– Creates jobs/ new
appliences that help stop the problem
PA Government Policies
• The Pennsylvania Legislature passed a law preventing smoking in many public places in June. It was in effect immediately. Ed Rendell signed it 90 days later.
Ways to Fix Problem
• Get better and clean ventilation in your house.
• Remove your exposure to the pollution.
• Open windows on nice days.
• Carbon Monoxide detectors.
