Advantageous of the use of Nuclear Energy for

Electricity Power in Central Kalimantan

1. Geographically Kalimantan Island is free from earthquake

and tsunami

2. Central and West Kalimantan have along over than 2000 km

of shore line and big river as potential for cooling power

3. Central and West Kalimantan have huge amount of land and

the population density is still very low ( 14 person/km 2)

4. Based on National Policy , Central and West Kalimantan

appointed as National Energy Resources and Mining

Process

5. According to site seismic condition, Central and West

Kalimantan suitable to develop of nuclear power study

6. Central Kalimantan has appointed by the President of the

Republic of Indonesia as pilot province of the REDD+

implementation

7. Conclusion/Summary

Page 23: Indonesia INDONESIA’s INTEREST in NEW NUCLEAR at: The 3rd Annual Platts Small Modular Reactors Conference May 21-22, 2012 • Arlington, VA - USA INDONESIA’s INTEREST in NEW NUCLEAR

* Act. RI. No.4/2009, ** Act. RI. No. 30/2007, *** President of Indonesia decree no. 5/2006 23

a. The end of year 2013 all minerals can not export as raw materials and should be processed so it have added value*

b. According to Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesia Economic Development Indonesia especially Kalimantan Economic Corridor as a “Center for Production and Processing of National Mining and Energy Reserves”

c. The development of Economic Corridors requires a large amount of power supply. Under MP3EI, the additional power supply needed in Indonesia by the year 2025 is projected to reach about 90,000 MW. The existing is less than 35,000 MW.

d. Provision and utilization of new & renewable energy should be increased by the government and local government in accordance to their authorities **. Provision and utilization of new renewable energy can get incentives from government/local government for certain period until it reaches economical development stage and that nuclear energy should be contributed 2 % as part of 17 % new and renewable energy***

e. Kalimantan island itself more stable site than others island in Indonesia and reached of mining especially Zircon and Bauxite and it’s industries will be growing rapidly as long as energy be provided for short term by fossil power and for the future by nuclear.

f. The local government are provided site land for energy and industries development both.

CHALLENGE AND OPPORTUNITY

2008 Technology Assessment Workshop 24

a. Advisory and evaluation of site selection study documents.

b. Facilitate technical communication between Indonesia as a user with nuclear technology developers

c. Provide a generic technology assessment methodology

d. Evaluation on preparing basic infrastructure

e. Facilitate technical visits of international experts to brief Indonesian nuclear stake holders on commercially available reactor technology

f. Inform Indonesian authority on related Seminars and workshops

g. Evaluation of URD and BID documents

h. Public acceptance

ElectricitCurrent National average electrification ratio < 70%.

Energy demand should be satisfied by new and renewable energy

Average electrification ratio (base load) in out of Java < 50 % (i.e. Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua, Maluku, East and West Nusa Tenggara).

Inter islands electricity transmission need to be added

According to the local geography condition, SMR will satisfy the needs in out of Java islands especially in Kalimantan.
