CLASSICAL LIBERALISM

Hobbes -Humans are naturally selfish, but could live in peace by giving up all of their political rights to a ruler who would protect them.

-A leader who did not protect their citizens could be overthrown-Valued the worth of protection of individuals-Social Contract: an implicit agreement among people that results in the organization of society; individual surrenders liberty in return for protection

-His emphasis on the best interests of individuals reflected the importance of rights and freedoms.-- The ideas of a social contract implies a degree of accountability.

Locke -Was focused on logic and reason to determine actions.-- Humans had absolute rights(life, liberty, security, private property)

-Government was accountable to the people-Wanted ownership of protection and private property.--Social Contract

-Promoter of the rule of law and protection of civil liberties, rights and freedoms, under a constitution.

Montesquieu - Separation of the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government would keep the government accountable.

- Wanted the elimination of the French Monarchy.

- High importance on the rule of law, the constitutional on the government and the dominance of individual rights and freedoms.

Smith -Invisible Hand: individuals are free to make their own decisions in a free market. -- this would benefit society as a whole and move it forward

-Opposition to the mercantilism of the time-His free market and limited gov’t role in the economy were controversial of the time

-Economic Ideas were directed at economic freedom, self- interest, competition and private property.- Rule of Law and Individual rights and freedoms.

Mill -Individual rights and freedoms and free speech.-Limitations as to one’s actions harming another.

-Emphasis on rights and freedoms in an era when rights were restricted.

-Individual rights and freedoms.

Ricardo -Supply and demand should determine wages.-Government should not regulate this at all.

-Capitalist economics was controversial.

-Self-interest- Competition- Economic Freedom

Dickens -Everyone should be treated as an equal- The poor were being mistreated at the hand of the wealthy, the courts, the judiciary and the political systems.

-The class system was the norm at the time, if you were born poor you had to stay poor and if you were born wealthy you were seen as wealthy your whole life.-He emphasized equal rights for all as well as equal rights to gain wealth and class

-Individual rights and freedoms-Economic Freedom
