Je wilt vertellen wat Steven heeft gezegd. Dat kan op 2 manieren:

Steven vertelde: “Ik voel me ziek”

..of:

Steven vertelde dat hij zich ziek voelde.

De eerste optie is de directe rede, de tweede optie is de indirecte rede.

De indirecte rede in het Engels heet de indirect speech:

Steven said, ‘I’m feeling ill.’ (direct speech)

Steven said (that) he was feeling ill. (indirect speech)

Je gebruikt de indirect speech om te zeggen wat iemand anders heeft gezegd heeft zonder dat je hem/haar quote.

Omdat het gaat over iets wat al gezegd is, gebruik je de verleden tijd.

•Dus een opmerking in de Present Simple wordt met de indirect speech de Past Simple.

•Een opmerking in de Present Continuous wordt met de indirect speech de Past Continuous.

•Zowel Past Simple als de Present Perfect worden met de indirect speech de Past Perfect.

• Dus een opmerking in de Present Simple wordt met de indirect speech de Past Simple.

direct speech: Wendy said, ‘I play guitar.’

indirect speech: Wendy said (that) she played guitar.

• Een opmerking in de Present Continuous wordt met de indirect speech de Past Continuous.

direct speech: Michael explained, ‘I am painting the house now.’

indirect speech: Michael explained (that) he was painting the house now.

• Zowel Past Simple als de Present Perfect worden met de indirect speech de Past Perfect.

direct speech: Thomas told us, ‘I saw her last week.’

indirect speech: Thomas told us (that) he had seen her last week.

direct speech: Jay said, ‘I have known him all my life.’

indirect speech: Jay said (that) he had known him all his life.

Vaak moet je ook het persoonlijk voornaamwoord veranderen.

Hank: ‘We don’t like to do our groceries.’

Hank said that they didn’t like to do their groceries.

Liz: ‘I always walk the dog after dinner.’

Liz said that she always walked the dog after dinner.

Shayne: I saw Chris last weekend.

Shayne told me that he had seen Chris that weekend before.
