History, development and subgenres

Indie folk is a music genre that came about in the 1990s from musicians in the indie rock group and came to the United Kingdom in the early 2000s. It is fundamentally influenced by folk and country music.

It combines the indie rock sound and the acoustical sounds of contemporary folk music.

Subgenres include electric folk, psychedelic folk and folk punk.

In the mid 80s ‘indie’ was a term to describe the music produced by pop punk label rather than the labels themselves.

Conventions of Indie Rock music

• Stylistic origins – Folk music, indie rock, folk rock, lo-fi, folk punk

• Cultural origins – Late 90s US and early 2000s UK

• Typical instruments associated with the genre – acoustic guitars, banjos, violins, double bass, piano.

Fashion

The clothes of indie folk artists and what is worn in their music videos tends to be natural and casual which fits with the relaxed feel of the style of music.

Most indie folk artists dress to match the setting however some dress fairly formal with buttoned shirts and waist coats.

Indie Folk is an organic style of music.

The originality of it means it uses different, often not used instruments and musical props to make it organic and unique.

Indie folk artists usually write and sing their own songs and play their own instruments contributing to their music and personal style rather than being someone who is just there to sing a song written by someone else.

Indie folk artists/bands also tend to fall into Dyer’s theory as they are usually known for being young with originality and unique attitude.

I chose this song as it comes under my favourite genre of music.The genre is very naturalistic and I feel I will be able to work well with it and be able to play with it when producing my own music video for the song.

I will need natural lighting and a natural setting which should be easy to get and use. Also, there is no need for extravagant production and I feel a simplistic and sophisticated feel will be best for this music video.
