THINK SNOW
Jean Ballinger, VP Trips
For me, next year’s ski season began about 4 months ago at the Mountain Travel Symposium in Squaw Valley, where I met with resort and lodging representatives from through the United States and Europe, as well as tour operators. In order to meet with the appropriate folks, I needed some idea of where our club wanted to ski next year. So back in February, a tentative schedule was prepared for use at the Symposium. (Our final schedule is slightly different from the first draft.) An entire day was spent (from 9 AM to 5 PM) in a number of 15 minute meetings, best described as “speed dating.” I learned a lot and as a result, I hope, contracted for trips to destinations our members are most interested in. A lot of time and effort went into preparing your trips, and I welcome your comments.
We will also plan for a Learn to Ski (and Ski Better) day with club instructors at Perfect North on Saturday, January 6.
Trip sign-ups will be open at the August 12 club picnic at the Indianapolis Sailing Club at Geist Reservoir.
Deposits for the New Year trip to Panorama and the European trip to Bormio are $300. Other trips require $150 deposit.
You may notice that final payment/cancellation dates for trips are earlier this year. That became necessary for the club to avoid the liability of huge cancellation penalties from suppliers, in particular lodging and airlines. The club will not be able to hold unsold spaces beyond the final payment/cancellation date. So if you’re interested in a trip, don’t wait until the last minute, because space will likely not be available, as it has been in the past. It’s a sign of changing times.
We have received outstanding feedback on the job our ski instructors do for all level of skiers. So there will be club instruction on three trips this year: Breckenridge, Tahoe and Big Mountain.
Please remember to renew your membership before signing up for a trip.
Planning ahead: Ohio Valley Ski Council is looking into a Bike & Barge trip to Europe next summer. So if you are interested, save some dollars and vacation time for it.
OVSC also has two Midwest ski trips you might want to know about:. A New Year trip (Dec. 29 – Jan. 1) to Seven Springs, PA and a spring trip (Mar. 1-4) to Timberline, WV. The OVSC contact is Stephanie Kibbey, 812-327-5333.

From the Prez… Teddy Orr
Welcome to the 2006-2007 ski season! Your Board and member volunteers have been hard at work getting ready for a great year.
Trips: Jean Ballinger has put together an awesome ski schedule. You’ll find this year’s destinations elsewhere in this Boomer as well as on our web site at www.indyskiclub.org. Look it over and decide where you’d like to ski with us this year. You can sign up at our picnic on August 12 at the Indianapolis Sailing Clubhouse on Geist. Look for the ad elsewhere in this Boomer. And of course, you can sign up at the September 14 and October 12 club meetings at the Adams Mark. Don’t forget you can also sign up (but not pay) for a trip using the club’s web site, and you can always mail an application and deposit to the trip’s leader.
From new destinations like Panorama in British Columbia to old favorites like spring skiing in Aspen, you should find at least one trip to your liking. We know that nearly everyone who joins our club goes on at least one trip…in fact, many of us are multiple-trip takers. And why not? The club offers lots of extras on its trips that you don’t get if you do the planning yourself…already-booked lodging and transportation, optional side trips and non-skiing activities. Some trips feature free ski lessons from our own certified instructors. And most important…there are our great members to ski with!
Social: OK…we can’t ski all the time. The club also offers off-slope, year-round activities that offer fun as well as time to socialize. Upcoming events are listed on the cover and on the web page.
If you have ideas or suggestions for events, please tell me or any of the Board members. We are always happy to add social activities.
Meetings: Other than the picnic, our meetings this year will again be held at the Adams Mark near the airport on the second Thursday of the appropriate months. Regular membership meetings will be in August (picnic and trip sign up at Geist), September & October (continued trip sign up), December (holiday party), February, and April (elections and meltdown). If you are interested in the “official” business of the club, you are always welcome at our Board meetings, held about every 6 weeks (or more often if there is pressing business.) Dates and locations will be posted on our web site. The next meeting is July 26 at Jean Ballinger’s home. If you’d like to attend, please let Jean or me know. (continued page 6)

Ski Club (and friends) Bike Ride in May
Membership: Don’t forget to renew yours. Unless you joined after February 2006, your membership expires in September. Although costs continue to rise, we are pleased to announce that dues will remain the same--$40 for a single membership and $60 for a family. A recent comparison with other Ohio Valley (OVSC) clubs shows that our dues are lower than in other clubs our size or larger. Also, your Indy membership enables you to go on trips offered by any club that is a member of the OVSC (and CMSC) councils. OVSC clubs’ schedules should be listed soon at www.ovsc.org.
To renew your ISC membership, simply complete a renewal application obtained at a club meeting, on the club web site, or in this issue. Then get it, along with your check made payable to the Indianapolis Ski Club, to Marilyn Rader. She will have a table at the picnic and at each meeting. If you prefer, you can also renew on the club’s web site and mail your check to Marilyn. Her address is on the web and on the renewal form.
Remember, your ideas, suggestions and assistance are always welcome and appreciated. Join me for a great 2006-2007 ski season.
I’ll see you at the August picnic! …………..Teddy
