The Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper is the nation’s fourth oldest surviving African-American newspaper in the country. What began in 1895 as a two-

page church bulletin created by co-founders George P. Stewart and Will Porter now hails as one of the top African-American publications in the United States. In 1897, the newspaper’s co-founders expanded their successful newssheet into a weekly newspaper. The earliest existing issues of the Recorder date back to 1899 – the same year that Porter

sold his share of the paper to Stewart.

William G. Mays, the paper’s current publisher, purchased The Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper in 1990, entrusting his niece, Carolene Mays to serve

as president and general manager. Carolene gave the paper new direction and a blueprint for success for more than

12 years before returning to community service in local government.

Experienced journalist and longtime Recorder employee, Shannon Williams succeeded Carolene as president and general manager. One of the initial things Williams did in her role as president

was form the Recorder Media group which houses the Recorder, its sister publication the Indiana Minority Business Magazine and serves as an in-house

marketing/ communications firm.

Shannon Williams is the president and general manager of Recorder Media Group. Over the years, this national award-winning journalist has demonstrated tremendous skills in the areas of

communications, leadership and advocacy.

Her tenure with the company began in 2000 as marketing and circulation manager. Recognizing her vast managerial and written skills, Williams was promoted to

assistant editor one year later and in 2002 she became editor; making her the youngest to hold such a title in the history of the company. After only six years at the Recorder, Williams was appointed vice president. She began serving

in her current capacity as president and general manager in 2010.

Williams has received numerous awards for her contributions in the communications industry from organizations such as the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Newspaper Publishers Association. Williams was featured in the February 2007 issue of Ebony magazine as one of the nation’s future leaders. In addition she was recently recognized by Indianapolis Business Journal in the publication’s Forty Under 40 feature that profiles individuals who are excelling in their respective fields.

Williams serves on a variety of nonprofit boards with focus areas ranging from education to the arts. In 2011 Williams made history by becoming the first African - American to serve on the Hoosier State Press Association board.

Mays has often been called “Indiana’s most successful Black businessman.” The highly respected entrepreneur started Mays Chemical Company, Inc. in 1980 and transformed it from a one-person operation in a two-room office to a company that today serves clients in all 50 states, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Mays Chemical generated more than $162 million in sales at the end of last year and is ranked amongst the top 13 largest chemical distributors in North America. Mays Chemical Company also has the distinction of repeatedly being on Black Enterprises’ top 20 list.

Mays’ entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to the community led him to acquire the Recorder in 1990. He is also the former owner of Hoosier Radio and Television Properties, and has significant interest in a property management firm, several golf courses, construction companies, and other small businesses.

His generous philanthropic contributions are a valued resource to many organizations, including the NAACP and The Mays Family Foundation: which he founded to provide funding for youth development and education. Among Mays’ extensive list of honors is his position as the first African - American chairman of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce and the first African - American appointed chairman of the Indiana Lottery Commission. He holds Honorary Doctorate Degrees from Indiana University, Martin University, Marian University and the University of Evansville.

Indianapolis is the 12th largest city in the United States, and the second largest city in the Midwest. In 2010, the population of Indianapolis was 820,445, making it one of the fastest growing regions in the United States. It is by-far one of our country’s most livable big cities.

For those who reside and work here, Indianapolis has a quality about it that makes even the heart of a bustling downtown feel like home. Indianapolis is comprised of 352,164 households, with an average of 2.44 people living in each household. These households can be broken down into various family types:

For much of its history, Indianapolis has oriented itself around government and industry, particularly manufacturing. Today, Indianapolis has a much more diversified economy, contributing to the fields of education, health care, and finance. Tourism is also a vital part of the economy of Indianapolis, and the city plays host to numerous conventions and sporting events. Of these, perhaps the most well known is the annual Indianapolis 500. Other major sporting events include the Brickyard 400 and the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Basketball Tournaments. January 2012 marked the first time Indianapolis hosted the Super Bowl. Super Bowl XLVI took place at Lucas Oil Stadium and garnered worldwide attention.

Keith Payne is the owner of North Meridian Hardware store, located in a prime loca-tion near 16th and Meridian Street. While he has a wide variety of customers, he said he has quite a few African-Americans who strongly sup-port his business.“People will go out of their way to shop here, which is good. Even if they come here to get an item and have to go to another store to get an-other item, they support the business. Others live near the store,” said Payne.

Many Blacks say supporting Black business is important to them and do so as often as possible including local

African-American Jocellyn Ford. “If we don’t support ‘us’ who will,” Ford said.Harry Alford, president and CEO of the National Black Chamber of Commerce said there is a rising support base of Blacks who patronize Black businesses and seek the ex-pertise of Black professionals such as physicians and attor-neys, but he believes more is needed.

“The Black population, ac-cording to the University of Georgia, has about a trillion dollars in disposable income each year. According to the census bureau, Black business does about $138 billion in rev-enue. There’s a big gap there and I think that’s a good in-

dicator that we don’t support like we should,” said Alford.Alford has personally felt the effects of a lagging Black clientele. His current home is in Washington, D.C., but years ago, Alford owned a video store near 40th and High School Road on Indianapolis’ Westside. He said a white-owned video store opened nearby and shortly thereafter, he noticed that Blacks were frequenting the other store rather than his. Alford adds that other cultures strongly support one another and can be a source of inspiration for the Black community. He recalls a conversation with a Korean business owner who admitted that not all Koreans mesh well

together, but supporting one another is important in their community. He also recalls a time when he was competing for a client against a Jewish contender. “My competitor said ‘I’m go-ing to get the deal.’ I asked her what made her so sure and she said, ‘member of the tribe. They’re Jewish, I’m Jewish, I’m going to get the deal.’ And she did,” said Alford. “(Blacks) need to think like that.”There is a group of African-Americans who do the best they can to support Black business, however there are some in the community who choose not to support. “I got tired of the ghetto at-titudes and the bad service, so

The human heartbeat is a fascinating feature of our anatomical make-up. Its rhythmic thump, thump, thump echoes in the quickened footsteps of pedestrians on cracked concrete and basketballs bounc-ing on playground asphalt.Its frantic pounding and sudden lull, signifying the end, resonates through space creating yet another physical void as evidenced by the 34 homicides India-napolis has had since the beginning of 2014.According to medical author Regina Avraham, one single heartbeat produces enough energy in a lifetime to drive a truck to the moon and back. But what happens to a heartbeat destroyed, does its energy shrivel up and disappear? In the case of a community’s heartbeat the

Journalist used voice for various causesA daughter of slaves, Ida B. Wells was born in Holly Springs, Mississippi, on July 16, 1862. On one fateful train ride from Memphis to Nashville, in 1884, Wells reached a personal turn-ing point. Having bought a fi rst-class train ticket to Nashville, she was ordered to move to the car for African-Americans, and refused. She was then forcibly removed from the train. Wells sued the railroad, winning a $500 settlement in a circuit court case. This injustice led Wells to pick up a pen to write about issues of race and politics in the South. Using the moniker “Iola,” a number of her articles were published in Black newspapers and periodicals. Wells eventually became owner of the Memphis Free Speech and Headlight, and, later, of the Free Speech.Wells also led an anti-lynching crusade in the U.S. in the 1890s, was a vocal critic of the condi-tion of Black schools, and went on to found and become integral in groups striving for African-American justice. In 1896, she formed the National Association of Colored Women and is considered a founding member of the NAACP.Wells died of kidney disease on March 25, 1931, at the age of 69, in Chicago.Community has mixed reactions when supporting Black business

Out of 14 locations identifi ed by the city as potential sites for

the construction of a consolidated justice complex, two have

been named as the most suitable options.

In a recent statement released by the city, Mayor Greg Ballard

announced the former General Motors Stamping Plant, located

near downtown, as the most viable location. “It’s clear the land

previously occupied by the plant is the best choice in terms of

cost, accessibility and available space needed for this project,”

said Ballard.

The proposed new complex, which will move the criminal

courts, jails 1 and 2, and related offi ces currently housed in the

City-County Building or near that building, will replace those

existing facilities and potentially ease courtroom overfl ow.

“It’s been widely reported that our current facilities are aging

and ineffi cient – it’s costing taxpayers a lot of money to main-

tain the facilities,” said Mark Lotter, Ballard’s communications

director. “Currently criminal justice and public safety consume

92 percent of our budget.”

language is fascinating. Words such as swag can be used to communicate a number of things, from an “ornamental

festoon of fl owers, fruit and greenery” to a popular expres-sion of a cool, stylish confi -dence in one’s appearance.The fact that the Oxford English Dictionary regularly

updates its website oxford-dictionaries.com with new, hip words is evidence that culture, youth culture specifi cally, heav-

ily infl uences language.Such is the case with the infamous n-word. A great majority of youth, regardless of color lines, embrace it as a term of endearment, noting that it’s the ending chosen by the speaker that makes all the difference. However, whether it ends in ‘gga or ‘gger the term is shunned by those, mostly in older generations, who still visualize haunting images of physical attacks and verbal abuse on Blacks.Yet, the term lives on despite

a highly publicized “funeral”

led by NAACP delegates dur-ing their 2007 convention in Detroit, and various attempts at legislation.Recently, the National Foot-

ball League became the latest institution to discuss possible banning of the word. The NFL Competition Committee has the n-word on its list of discus-sion items for an upcoming meeting in Florida.The hot button issue has no

lack of opinionated viewpoints from players. In an interview with Peter King of “Monday Morning Quarterback.” Rich-ard Sherman of the Seattle Seahawks called the idea “atro-

cious.” “It’s almost racist, to me,” said Sherman. “It’s weird

they’re targeting one specifi c word. Why wouldn’t all curse words be banned then?”Although the committee is

not a governing body, it can suggest new rules for owners to vote on. In the case of assign-ing actionable guidelines to language in the workplace, the NFL’s potential rule is not at all unprecedented. Most employ-ers have codes of conduct that prohibit language and actions that can be deemed offensive. In a previous interview for the Indiana Minority Busi-ness Magazine, Sara Blevins,

partner at Lewis and Kappes law fi rm in Indianapolis, says language becomes a legal issue “when it is used in a way that

can be viewed as or deemed to be a part of a discrimina-tory issue,” such as a racially or

sexually charged statement.Blevins said that in determin-ing discrimination, one of the key phrases to consider is “hos-tile work environment.” “What this means,” said Blevins, “is that the workplace is so per-vaded by discrimination that the terms and conditions of employment were altered.”In the case of the n-word the

same applies, regardless of color as one Black employer discovered when he found himself the subject of a civil

suit after he repeatedly used the word toward his Black employee.

When asked how they felt about a possible n-word ban, Recorder readers had much to say. Here are their reac-tions.

“I don’t think it’s going to be effective. They’ll just have to use other regular words. One popular word is “ninja.” Are they going to ban those words that are substituted as well?” – Samuel SirmonsRadio associate producer

“I would never use the n-word, and I don’t think anyone should. But I think it qualifi es under freedom of speech. There are people that fi nd the f-word offensive, and I’m a big fan of it. Meet Karin Sarratt. She is the vice president of

human resources, commercial and specialty busi-

ness division for WellPoint Inc., a Fortune 500

company that touches 1 in 9 Americans lives.

Many would label Sarratt as a successful busi-

nesswoman, but if you ask her if she has shat-

tered the glass ceiling, she’d humbly say “in

job experiences and the lessons of life,” said

Alopecia 101 (Aug. 12-Health broadsheet)Alopecia, considered an autoimmune disease, occurs when the immune system, which is designed to protect the body from foreign invaders such as viruses and bacteria, mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, the structures from which hairs grow. This can lead to hair loss on the scalp and elsewhere. The Recorder will inform readers of how and why this disease affects a great number of African-Americans, as well as provide tips from medical professionals on how to treat the condition.

If you attend a church regu-larly, you’ve probably noticed the phenomenon where a visitor shows up for a worship service, then never returns. It is, un-fortunately, a common issue in many churches.

I did a Twitter poll to ask fi rst-time guests why they chose not to return to a particular church. While some of the responses were anticipated, I admit being a bit surprised with some of them.

1. Having a “stand up and greet one another” time in the worship service. This response was my greatest surprise. I was surprised by just how uncom-fortable guests are during this time.

2. Unfriendly church mem-bers. This response was antici-pated. But the surprise was the number of respondents who in-cluded non-genuine friendliness in their answers. In other words, the guests perceived some of the church members were faking it.

3. Unsafe and unclean children’s area. This response

generated the greatest emo-tional reactions. If your church does not give a high priority to children, don’t expect young families to attend.

4. No place to get informa-tion. If your church does not have a clear and obvious place to get information, you probably have lowered the chances of a return visit by half.

5. Bad church website. Most of the church guests went to the church website before they attended a worship service. The two items guests want are ad-dress and times of service.

6. Poor signage. If you have been attending a church for a few weeks, you forget all about the signage. You don’t need it any more. But guests do.

7. Insider church lan-guage. Most of the respondents were not referring to theological language as much as language that only the members know. My favorite example was: “The WMU will meet in the CLC in the room where the GAs usually meet.”

8. Boring or bad service. My surprise was not the presence of this item. The surprise was that

it was not ranked higher.9. Members telling guests

that they were in their seat or pew. Yes, this obviously still takes place in some churches.

10. Dirty facilities. Some of the comments: “Didn’t look like it had been cleaned in a week.” “No trash cans anywhere.” “Restrooms were worse than a bad truck stop.” “Pews had more stains than a Tide commercial.”

Team examines Indy’s high-crime neighborhoodsSTAFF REPORT

City and community leaders are meeting to find solutions to the issues fac-ing six high-crime areas of Indianapolis.

In October, Mayor Greg Ballard and Public Safety Director Troy Riggs announced a new data-focused initiative to bring long-term positive change to some of Indianapolis’ most-challenged areas and vowed to work on issues common to all six areas, including vacant housing and mental illness. n W. 16th St. and N. effects, and we confront those effects every day through the work of the Department of Public Safety,” said Public Safety Director Troy Riggs. “We also have to deal with the causes and bring long-term change that will make Indianapolis an even better place to live for the next generation. We have citizens who deserve a better life and we need to work together to address their needs.”

Team meetings will continue throughout 2015. The Department of Code Enforcement anchored the initial meeting and offered a deeper look at the reali-ties that reduce the quality of life for residents in all six areas including vacant housing, trash, high weeds and grass, and abandoned vehicles.

The results are startling. For example, more than 12,000 code violations have been reported in the high-crime areas since Jan. 1, 2013.

Various community part-ners attended the meeting and are looking for ways to partner with the city on the effort.

“Improving the quality of life is an effort in which we all can take owner-ship,” said Department of Code Enforcement Direc-tor Manual Mendez. “The attention given to our designated focus areas will increase collaboration and partnerships within the community and abroad, as we work to make our neighborhoods safer and more attractive places to live.”

The team will meet three more times during 2014: Nov. 18, Nov. 25 and Dec. 9.

“Our work has only begun, and there is a tremendous amount to do, but the level of community support for this effort is energizing,” said Riggs. “We continue to hear from community partners that want to do whatever they can to help our citizens and neighbors who live and work in these areas.”

The Indianapolis public is invited for two days of events examining the facts and fallacies of standardized testing in public education.

On Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Cen-tral Library’s Clowes Auditorium, all are invited to attend the Indi-ana premiere of the documentary, “Standardized Lies, Money & Civil Rights: How Testing Is Ruining Public Education.”

In the film, educational experts question the wisdom, and profit centers, of high-stakes testing. Fol-lowing the documentary, a panel discussion will feature Carole Craig of the Greater Indianapolis NAACP; Kahlil Mwaafrika of KI Community School; Phillip Harris, co-author of The Myths of Stan-dardized Testing; and moderator Mathew Davis of Localmotion.

Then on Nov. 17, at 6 p.m. in Central Library’s Clowes Audito-rium, attendees can explore the

whos, hows, whys, effects and implications of testing in public schools. Panelists will include Dr. Dena Cushenberry, superinten-dent MSD Warren Township; Dr. Khaula Murthada with IUPUI’s Educational Leadership and Policy Studies; and Jeremy Baugh, founding principal of The Phalen Leadership Academies.

groups, they came with others who spoke their native language,” said Baugh. “Slave traders separated slaves by language whenever possible to break down communication among them so they wouldn’t engage in uprising during the Atlantic crossing.”

As a result of this, slaves are the sole group that came to the U.S. without their native tongue intact.

Once in America, Baugh said slaves were denied access to schools, therefore the language forms learned and used on plantations were never really modified.

Even as time passed, Blacks primarily lived amongst themselves in segregated neighborhoods further preserving the use of certain types of language.

“As long as you have racial segregation you’re going to still have distinctive pat-terns,” said Baugh.

Though Baugh is an expert on lan-guage and culture, and African-Ameri-can, he said when talking on the phone, many believe he is white. When talking to Black people he knows well, his style shifts. He said this is quite common.

“Many well-educated African-Amer-icans, especially if they grew up in urban neighborhoods, adopt one style of speaking in their profession and they have another style they use informally,” said Baugh.

He expands on his point using retired Gen. Colin Powell and former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice as examples.

Both are slave descendants, but nei-ther use those language characteristics. However, if you look at activists Jesse Jackson or Rev. Al Sharpton, while their grammar may be standard Eng-lish, their pronunciations are patterned after slave descendants.

On the other side of this coin, there’s the “white person who grew up in a predominantly Black neighborhood.” Baugh said people speak like the people they interact with and more impor-tantly those they seek respect from. This may explain why white artists such as Iggy Azalea, Machine Gun Kelly and more famously, white rapper Eminem, come across the airwaves as Black.

Baugh adds that it can be argued that when a white person says phrases clear-ly common to Blacks, such as “what up, dog?” they may or may not be racist.

He recommends that Blacks ask themselves: is this person a close

friend? Did they grow up in the Black community? What’s their motivation?

Stuart Davis, a professor in the Department of Linguistics at Indiana University Bloomington said if you examine race as part of this conversa-tion, it’s unfortunate that whites can use phrases like “what up, dog” and not be criticized, but a Black person is criti-cized for “speaking Black” or improper English.

Davis said one should note that what we know of as Standard English is just another dialect and what is considered “correct” is also determined by history and economics.

“If you take a look at the U.S., south-ern dialect is looked down upon. Why? Well, if the South had won the Civil War, southern English would have been equated with standard English and northern accents would have been looked down upon,” said Davis. “This reflects the power structure of society.”

Language is not only about one’s his-tory or accommodating your circum-stances, language is about one’s class.

Those who are considered upper class sound different than the working or poor class. Baugh said this remains true regardless of race.

When discussing speech, one must take into account one’s accent. He uses the example of Chicago.

There, the city is divided. There are areas that are predominantly Black and others with very few Blacks. In each area, you’ll find distinct accents.

“One of the things in Chicago is the ‘aah’ sound. So they’ll say Chi-caah-go. You’ll find that pronunciation among white Chicagoans, but not among Black Chicagoans,” said Davis. “They live in the same city, they all root for the Bears, they are largely Democratic, but you’re not going to hear that from an African-American.”

When looking at accents more broadly, someone from Boston sounds different from someone living in New Orleans. Davis said there is a distinct southern Black accent and a Northern Black accent. He maintains that there are features common among Blacks that are not shared by whites, no matter where you live.

One should also note that unlike other countries, the U.S. does not have an of-ficial language.

On Nov. 4, residents across Marion County will cast their votes in the 2014 general election. Among the offi ces up for re-election this year are secretary of state, auditor, treasurer, and United States Representative to name a few.

Despite the fact that the aforemen-tioned political offi ces play a signifi cant role in the overall quality of life for Indianapolis residents, voter turnout has fl uctuated over the past years with a mere 7.9 percent of registered voters participating in May’s primary.

“People are emotional voters so gen-erally, presidential elections are where people turn out,” said Eugene Hawkins, a civic engagement coordinator with the Greater Indianapolis Branch of the NAACP. “When there’s no big emotion-al race, people aren’t voting. They don’t understand the whole process and then they regret that they didn’t participate when they see the outcome.”

Hawkins, who occasionally works as a polling place inspector in Pike Township, shared that he has noticed fl uctuating attendance between dif-ferent elections. With the Oct. 6 voter registration deadline fast approaching, NAACP President Chrystal Ratcliffe and other offi cials are reaching out to potential voters via door-to-door canvassing in targeted areas with a high concentration of non-registered citizens. Voter registration drives and voter education events are underway, said Hawkins. The NAACP’s goal: sign-ing up at least 10,000 new registrants across Indiana.

“We’re non partisan so our goal is to engage as many people as possible - what they do behind the little sheet is up to them,” said Hawkins. “We’re focused on educating people about how not voting now has serious implications later. If people know those things they now have a conscious choice to make.”

Cindy Mowery, the Republican co-director of the Marion County Voter Registration Board, said intimidation and a lack of proper information may be responsible for low turnout.

“I think to a lot of people, specifi cally those that are elderly and also new vot-ers, they’re intimidated with what they have to do to vote,” said Mowery. “They don’t realize how simple it is. You can come into the Marion County Clerk’s offi ce and it’s a matter of fi lling in cir-cles next to the name of the candidate of your choice – I think a lot of people think it’s a much more complicated process than what it really is.”

Earlier this year, the Marion County Election Board failed to reach a unani-

mous decision regarding the opening of additional early voting sites (also known as “satellite” locations), and conducting precinct-based counting of absentee ballots. The Republican Party’s decision to vote against the reso-lution limited early voting to just one location - the Clerk’s offi ce in down-town Indianapolis.

In an interview with the Recorder, Marion County Clerk Beth White said she was “saddened” that her offi ce could not better serve the residents of Marion County. “Early voting is a popu-lar and convenient option for many people. I’m pleased we will continue to offer early voting in my offi ce, but the Election Board could do much more to encourage civic participation by allow-ing additional sites around the county,” she said.

LaDonna Freeman, who serves as the Democratic co-director of the voter registration board, said voters who an-ticipate diffi culty making it to the polls Nov. 4, should use the other resources available to them. “People can vote by mail or absentee-by-traveling- board if they’re confi ned – there are all sorts of ways people can vote.”

“For the majority of the people I know who have made that turn away from Christianity, it is because they found out something that didn’t quite jive with what they have learned histori-cally,” he said.

“If I go into a Black church and see a picture of a white Jesus and then I learn or hear that he wasn’t white then I go to my pastor and ask him and he tells me the same misinformation then I might feel uncomfort-able because I may begin to feel as if my culture has been rejected.”

For Anthony Artis, an adherent of Lucumi (also known as Santeria) an Afro Caribbean sect of the Ifa belief system from the Yoruba tribe of

Western Africa, his faith journey began when he was just 11 years old. “It started way back when I was a kid. I was raised in the A.M.E. Church in Kokomo and when I was about 11 years old I caused quite a stir,” said Artis. “It was my family church, my grandfather was the superintendent of the Sunday school but something just wasn’t doing it for me,” he said.

An extensive survey from the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life shows that more than one-quarter of American adults (28 percent) have left the faith in which they were raised in favor of another religion - or no religion at all.

Artis explained he felt like something was

missing and he had also grown to be bothered by what he described as an abundance of hypocrisy amongst congregants. Artis eventually left that congregation for another, and then an-other, even exploring Catholicism, Universalist Unitarianism, as well as Confucianism and Bud-dhism while in college.

“None of those paths did it for me,” he said. “During this time, I never lost my faith. I just couldn’t connect with the systems I was being exposed to.” That was until he met his wife, Iris, and was introduced to Santeria.

In 1995, Artis traveled to Cuba and had his first reading, a divination ritual through which a

high-ranking priest uses a variety of instruments to give spiritual advice and insight as well as inform the person receiv-ing the reading of their path of destiny. “Basical-ly, in this system you are having a talk with your-self but it’s your higher self,” said Artis. “In this cosmology everyone has a guardian angel, your Ori. That part of you that stays in the spirit realm at all times.” Lucumi teaches adherents to worship a pantheon of deities, known as Or-ishas, of which there are more than 20. Through the divination process, Artis learned he and his son, Andre Rosa-Artis, were to become high-ranking priests. In 2004, Artis went through a weeklong initiation pro-cess in Cuba and is now the only babalawo, which translates into “father of the secrets” in Yoruba, within a 100-mile radius of Indianapolis. Andre Rosa-Artis said that coming of age in a spiri-tually diverse household taught him several valu-able life lessons.

“I was blessed enough to have opportunities to tag along with parents that traveled the world and seeing how different people live gives you a different perspective on life. Also, having the abil-ity to reach somewhere (spiritually) where others can’t has been a big thing for me.”

Rosa-Artis said he en-counters misconceptions about his beliefs.

“People see the African stuff and they think it’s voodoo or something spooky, but what we do isn’t done in an evil way. The only purpose or objective of it all is to be in balance,” he said. “The spiritual systems that come from Africa are different than reli-gions because the object of spirituality is to keep

your entire self (mind, body, spirit) in balance even with everything else that’s going on around you. That’s something a lot of people don’t have that they yearn for. I think that’s a big rea-son why you see a lot of people moving toward African spirituality.”

Anyike, who describes himself as a religious pluralist, says he discov-ered through cultural and spiritual studies as an undergraduate stu-dent that there was a way to intersect his Christian faith and ties to Afrocen-tricism.

“I am a better Chris-tian because of my Afrocentrism, I changed my last name to Anyike which is an Igbo named that honors our ancestors as well as my relationship with God,” he said.

During his time as a pastor, he has infused several African-inspired traditions into worship services such as live drumming and obser-vances of Kwanzaa and Umoja Karamu. Anyike also wears African garb while preaching.

Anyike’s congregation is not unlike others in the United States as well as throughout Africa which are seeking to bridge that cultural and spiritual gap several Blacks have experienced.

“My own decision and my perspective is very personal and I feel this is the path God has led me to. There are some people that feel as though African spiritual-ity is where they meet God and hear from Him - I can’t say that their relationship is not as legitimate as mine just because it’s different. It would be foolish of me to assume that,” said Anyike. “My challenge to other brothers and sisters is to pray to God and follow the path given to them.”

Loretta Lynch could make historyPresident Barack Obama

has selected New York federal prosecutor Loretta Lynch to become attorney general for the United States — a move that could make her the first Black woman to lead the Jus-tice Department.

“It’s pretty hard to be more qualified for this job than Lo-retta,” Obama said, describing Lynch, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, as a lawyer with a three-decade record of accomplishment.

“She has spent years in the trenches as a pros-ecutor, aggressively fighting terrorism, financial fraud, cybercrime, all while vigorously defending civil rights.”

If Lynch, 55, wins Senate confirmation, she will replace Eric Holder, who announced his resigna-tion earlier this year after serving as the nation’s first Black attorney general.

“Loretta doesn’t look to make headlines. She looks to make a difference,” Obama said.

In her current role, Lynch oversees all federal and civil investigations and cases in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, as well as Nassau and Suffolk counties in Long Island.

I’ve yet to travel overseas, but I felt as if I stepped into the highlight of the Asian culture when I set foot into Naked Tchopstix on 96th St. This family-owned business, around since the fall of 2003, is dedicated to delivering a combination of Chinese, Japanese and Korean dishes sure to excite and satisfy your senses.

While the restaurant’s setup piqued my attention, with its wooden crimson and gold benches which replace tradi-tional seating, I was even more drawn to the table my two friends and I shared. Our booth was draped with colorful curtains, which acted as a sheer barrier between our table and other diners. “How neat!” I thought to myself.

Although Naked Tchopstix is famed for its sushi bar and chopstick-savvy patrons, I searched for items I knew I could handle with a knife and fork.

After being amused by my waiter (who was very comical and a great salesman I might add), I decided to or-der the Skewered Chicken dish, which consisted of three skewers of chicken breast marinated and charbroiled in a sweet teriyaki sauce. Sweet was right! It seemed as if the chicken breast had been marinated overnight, because the sweet and tangy flavors of the teriyaki sauce were so deeply embedded and provided great taste to compliment the sweetened peppers.

While sushi isn’t my personal favorite, they do offer a wide variety including the California Roll stuffed with crab, cucumber and avocados; the Crunch Salmon Roll; Rainbow Roll, which includes five kinds of seafood; as well as other specialty and vegetarian rolls. Their appetizers, also known as “small plates” offer an Asian Lettuce Wrap, Crab Rangoon, Orange Calamari and Korean Seafood Pancakes whipped together with green onions.

Soups, salads, noodles, rice, pork and steak also grace the menu. Not ready for a full meal? Try an appetizer at the restaurant’s full bar that has delicious drinks for the perfect evening out. school on Wheels seeks to

recruit, train and place new volun-teer tutors immediately. addition-ally, 40 new tutors will be needed during the 2015 spring semester as school on Wheels’ expands Tutors in action into Fox Hill elementary.

school on Wheels’ volunteer-driven tutoring program enhances educational opportunities for chil-dren impacted by homelessness. By demonstrating consistency and encouragement during the tutoring hour, tutors help children experi-encing homelessness understand that education is not only impor-tant but that it is possible despite their circumstances.

To become a school on Wheels tutor, individuals must be at least 11 years old. Tutors age 11-13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Tutors are asked to com-mit to one hour each week for a 15-17 week semester. interested tutors must complete a volunteer application, participate in a short phone interview, pass a criminal background check and attend a

recipe TimeTotal: 45 minutes

preparation1. in a large bowl, stir together

flour, brown sugar, baking pow-der, baking soda, cinnamon, gin-ger, nutmeg, and salt. in another bowl, mix egg, milk, pumpkin, yogurt, and butter until well blended. stir egg mixture into flour mixture just until evenly moistened.

2. place a nonstick griddle or a 12-inch nonstick frying pan over medium heat (350°); when hot, coat lightly with butter and adjust heat to maintain tem-perature. spoon batter in 1/3-cup

portions onto griddle and gently spread into 4-inch rounds. cook until pancakes are browned on the bottom and edges begin to look dry, 2 to 3 minutes; turn with a wide spatula and brown other sides, 2 to 3 minutes lon-ger. as pancakes are cooked, transfer to baking sheets and keep warm in a 200° oven. serve warm with candied-ginger butter and maple syrup.

candied-ginger butter: in a bowl, with a wooden spoon, stir 2 tablespoons finely chopped candied ginger into 1/4 cup (1/8 lb.) soft butter (soften in a micro-wave oven on full power [100%] for 5 to 10 seconds). chill until firm before serving. makes about 1/4 cup.

JAwS JAWS (Journalism And Writing Seminars) is a nonprofit instructional program established through the Indianapolis Recorder Charities to provide minority high school students hands-on training and exposure in the field of journalism. The goal of JAWS is to encourage participants to major in communications in college, graduate, and then pursue careers in journalism.

Through a series of training sessions that occur every September – May, we develop the professional communication skills for area youth. Industry professionals offer high school students instruction on journalistic writing skills through seminars and allow students to apply their knowledge by writing news and feature stories that are published in the Indianapolis Recorder Newspaper. These published “clips” help students as they pursue internship opportunities and as well as in their quest to enter the workforce upon college graduation.

To participate in the program, students complete an application package and are tested on basic skills. Those selected must attend classes twice a month, generally on Saturday mornings.

Guest speakers, field trips and symposiums are scheduled throughout the year to supplement on-site instruction. A core group of trainers conduct seminars on basic communication skills at the beginning of the year which includes:

Journalism and Writing Seminars

There comes a point in

every teen’s life when they

have to say goodbye to all

of their friends, leave the

school they have attended

all of their life, and go off

to high school.

For most teens, adjust-

ing to a new kind of school

is difficult, so it is important for teens to

choose the school that’s right for them.

Considering the fact that the public high

school graduation rate in Indiana is only

72 percent, and nearly 20 percent less for

African-Americans, choosing which high

school to attend is an important decision.

Some Indiana middle school students know

what they want out of high school.

“I think high school will be a chance to

learn new things,” says Anthony Driver,

an eighth grader who attends School 91.

“I want to meet new people and further

my education.”

Many middle school students are looking

forward to starting high school.

“I have friends who are in high school,

and from what I’ve heard I think high

school will be fun but hard,” says Damon

Barns, a seventh grader who attends Perry

Meridian Middle School.

There are many ways to look for a high

school, but finding the right fit can still

be tough.

At Driver’s middle school, the students

are allowed to “shadow” a student for a

day. Instead of coming to class, they go

to a high school of their choice and spend

the day with one of the students who go

there. Driver says he hasn’t done this yet,

but he has taken advantage of other op-

portunities to learn about

high schools.

“I went to Magnet Mania.

There were several (IPS)

schools featured at the

event. I talked to teachers at

different schools to find out

what the schools are about,”

he said.

No matter how many

teachers you talk to, some-

times the best way to learn

about a school is to talk

to students who go there

themselves.

Valerie Carter, a sopho-

more who attends Her-

ron High School, says she

loves everything about her

school.

“It’s an arts school, so

it has a lot of different

things you can do. You can

do theater, art, 3-D art,

cheerleading or dance. I’m

everywhere, I’m fun, and

I’m friendly. I am on the

dance team. When I grow

up I want to be a profes-

sional model and a dancer,

so it’s a good school for me,”

she says.

As a freshman at Brebeuf Jesuit High

School, Emma Barns, not related to

Damon, has just begun her high school

career.

“It’s been really different because we had

a schedule change, but overall high school

has been really nice. At my school it’s a

college-like atmosphere and we don’t have

the same classes every day,” she said.

The good thing about getting the inside

scoop on a school from the students who

go there is that they tell you the good and

the bad.

Even though Carter loves her school, she

admits some classes can be difficult.

“High school has been challenging,” she

said. “I have Latin, which is kind of hard

until you get used to it and know it better.

You have a lot of classes. It’s different from

my middle school. High school is harder.

At Herron we have credits and not normal

grades.”

Emma Barns feels like the good things

about her school outweigh the bad

things.

“The schedule in high school is totally

different from middle school and the work

is a lot harder, but I like my school. I play

soccer and I’m in the Putt-Putt Club which

can be a lot of fun.”

Middle school students appreciate

opportunities to hear what high school

students have to say, because even if they

aren’t sure what high school they want to

go to they know what type of school they

don’t want to attend.

“I don’t want to go to a high school with

a lot of kids who can’t control themselves,”

says Barns.

Driver agrees.

“I wouldn’t want to go to a high school

that has a lot of fights,” he said.

Carter has some advice that she hopes

will help others as they continue the search

for their perfect high school.

“Herron is an arts school, so it allows you

to show off your talents if you want to act

or dance. It was the school for me. I would

say find the school that’s right for you and

what you want to do. At my school we have

Mr. Clark who helps us with our graduation

and tells us about college even though I’m

a sophomore. When looking for a school,

you have to think about your future.”

Teens who are

balancing it all

Doing homework, playing bas-

ketball and working at McDonald’s

is what makes up the working

teenager.

Teenagers have the responsibility

of going to work, school and doing

outside extracurricular activities.

Autumn Ricketts is a junior at

Pike High School but for her it doesn’t stop at being

a full time student.

Ricketts works at Target and has extra activities

outside of school. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and

Monday Ricketts works in the afternoon.

After going to school from 7:15 a.m. to 2:23 p.m.

on Tuesday and Thursday Ricketts stays after school

for color guard practice and on Wednesday she prac-

tices from 6 to 9 p.m.

Juggling work, color guard and school for Ricketts

is a daily routine.

Ricketts has made the decision to work to make

payments for her extracurricular activities because

of the high cost of required equipment.

“I work to make extra money because guard is

expensive,” said Ricketts. Also color guard is some-

thing Ricketts enjoys which led her to the decision

to work.

“I do color guard because it’s something I’m good

at, I like to stay busy, and I don’t like to beg,” said

Ricketts.

Even though work and practice revolve around

each other, Ricketts has to do homework for

school.

“I schedule work around my practice schedule and

everything falls into place,” said Ricketts.

Homework takes two hours for Ricketts to com-

plete. “I finish homework around 8 or 9 and I go to

sleep at 11:30 p.m,” said Ricketts.

Parents sometimes agree with teens having a busy

schedule but for Ricketts it took some persuasion.

“At first they were against it because they thought

my grades would drop, but they haven’t said anything

yet,” said Ricketts.

For Ricketts working and having activities outside

of school benefit her. “It teaches me responsibility

and promptness,” said Ricketts.

Mackenzi Benson, a junior at Pike High School

and her mother approve of the path that she is taking

with all the activities that she is involved in.

“My mom is really proud because I spend my time

well and it’s a very positive thing that I am doing,”

said Benson.

Benson works at FC Tucker three to four days

out of the week and mentors kids at the Brightwood

Community Center on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Along with work and mentoring, Benson is able

to have dance practice for three to four hours on

Saturday, Tuesdays, and some Wednesdays.

For Benson she has adjusted well to balancing

school work by making good grades and still having

time to spend with friends and family. “I’m a straight

A student and I still have time to hang with friends

and family,” said Benson.

So keeping it together with a ton to do is not very

hard for some teens. “I balance by keeping a clear

mind, keeping myself on track, and knowing that I

will have a future,” said Benson.

Teenagers balancing it all is not a problem for

Ricketts or Benson.

The next step:

Finding the right high school

inspiration to

many kids in

neighborhood.

Baseball teams,

b a s k e t b a l l

teams and weekend trips to res-

taurants and movie theaters are

just some of the things McFarland

does to give back to the kids. Ever

since McFarland was a teenager

he has been different.

“I used to skateboard and for

me to be Black and skate always

got me teased,” McFarland said.

The teasing may have been

a joke, but that never stopped

Bernard.

Being a great role model is one

of McFarland’s good traits, he has

taught me a lot about finding out

who I am.

“I saw a unique person when

I got to know Donald. I saw that

he was different and I didn’t want

him to feel that coming from the

hood you had to be the same

as everybody else,” McFarland

stated.

“I used to get mentored by

some of the men in the neighbor-

hood, and I wanted to do the same

for some of the other kids when I

got older,” said McFarland.

McFarland wants kids to un-

derstand that nothing is handed

to you, and you have to put in

work to get the things you want.

He’s a great guy, being in the Navy

in 1996, raising his three teenage

boys, and still finding time to

help out in the community is a

great thing.

I didn’t know I wanted to sing

until I met McFarland. He once

told me, “If you don’t use the

talent you were blessed with you

will lose it.”

Influential, respectful and

helpful are just some of many

words used to describe McFar-

land. Friend and neighbor Regina

Curry had some things to say

about McFarland.

“Bernard is a great friend with a

great sense of humor, and I could

compare him to Julia Carson with

his love of service,” Curry said.

McFarland is always willing

to help anywhere, anytime. Long

time friend Christopher Sanders

had some light to shine on Ber-

nard as well.

“Bernard is not only a commu-

nity leader, he’s a leader amongst

men. Many young men can look

to him as a friend, brother or

father figure in the Brightwood-

Martindale community. He is also

a great example of how a man

should handle responsibility. He

is raising three boys who will be

great men one day. I have had

many one-on-one conversations

with Bernard and no matter what

we talked about I always walked

away feeling better or knowing

more than what I knew when we

started the conversation. The best

lesson I learned from Mr. McFar-

land involved pride. I carry this

story with me daily.”

McFarland is a great person

and a great community leader

and that is why he is a mentor

and unsung hero to many young

and adult men today.
