A WORD FROM DIANE . . .

2

“The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry,” so goes one version of that old saying that originated with Robert Burns’ poem, “To a Mouse.” Our usual posting of the week’s sermon has gone somewhat awry this week. It’s there but the recording begins about half way through. In the last half of the sermon I shared a story that has dogged my heels for the last year about a way to address food justice and help feed hungry people. And at the end I asked the question, “Is this a call for us?”

If you weren’t in worship on the 26th you can still hear the salient part by going to the website and clicking on “Weekly Messages” so the ongoing conversation will make sense to you.

If you’d rather read the whole thing I’m happy to share a manuscript — just ask. The story that won’t let go of my conscience or imagination is about a store called Open Table in a food desert in Dorchester, Massachusetts. A food desert is a rural or urban area without access to healthy foods — almost always a generally impoverished area. I wondered aloud in the sermon if helping to establish a store like that in Indianapolis is part of our call. To be clear, I don’t mean that we could undertake a project that like that all on our own, but I do wonder if we could be the impetus to bring together a coalition of faith communities, business, and community groups to do it. A number of you responded immediately. One person wondered if that meant I was leaving ACC to start a store — the answer to that is no. Another person on the way out the door said, “Count me in.” Another wondered if it’s time to call the Food Justice Dream Group back together to mull over the idea. Some people (I hear) have said this idea isn’t for them. On person heard in it the inspiration to create a larger garden with more produce to share. And one talented business man went home and immediately drew up a business plan and sent it back to me. So the conversation is underway and so are the prayers. The article with the story that started this whole train of thought is available on the Welcome Center — please take one and join the conversation. We’re living “Look for It”, right?

Peace & Grace, Diane

A PRAYER SERVICE FOR HEALING: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 5TH AT 6:17PM

As we prepare our hearts for the signs and wonders of Holy Week, you are invited to come to a special prayer service for healing of heart, mind, and body on Wednesday, April 5th (in place of our regular Taize services) at 6:17pm, with supper beginning at 5:30. Pastors Diane and Doug will offer anointing and individual prayer for all who seek healing of many kinds as our community will come together before the Great Physician with all that is on our hearts and minds this season. If you have enjoyed the space for silence and the simple music of Taize these past Wednesday evenings, this service will incorporate a similar atmosphere. Come as you are; you are worthy of God’s healing.

This popular community event is planned for Saturday, April 8th

at 10am. If the weather is nice we will be outside at the south end of the building; if rain is expected we will set up in the Family Room. Either way we will have a bounce house, music, lots of fun and of course, an egg-hunt for all ages!

This is a great community even, so be sure to invite your friends, family and neighbors!

EASTER EGG HUNT

Join us on Sunday, April 9th

for Palm Sunday services. 9:30 am for a traditional service and 11:00 am for a contemporary service. Both with a traditional Palm Parade and joyful music!

Palm Sunday

Please plan to join us on Maundy Thursday evening, April 13th

, for a special service in the Family Room. Bring a dish or two to share for a pitch-in dinner at 6:30pm and enjoy fellowship around the table. At 7:15pm or so we’ll clear dinner away and emulating Jesus and the disciples in the upper room we’ll worship there at the tables.

Scripture readings, hymns, and special music will be featured, there will be an hand and foot washing service, and we will share the Lord’s Supper around each table, serving one another much as Jesus and the disciples must have done.

Special music for the evening will include both an anthem from the choir and a beautiful piece by our wonderful men’s quartet. This promises to be a wonderfully moving Maundy Thursday service that you won’t want to miss.

MAUNDY THURSDAY

We will join with our sisters and brothers of Casa del Alfarero for Good Friday Service this year on April 14th at 7pm in the Sanctuary where we will share the end of the passion story.

YOUTH RAISES $2,092.50 FOR SECOND HELPINGS OF INDIANAPOLIS

REGIONAL SPRING YOUTH ASSEMBLY: APRIL 28-30 AT GENEVA CENTER, ROCHESTER, IN

This year’s Youth Assembly keynote speaker is Rev. Julian Deshazier, Senior Pastor at University Church Chicago. Registration (which is now open) is all-inclusive: four meals from breakfast Saturday to breakfast Sunday, two nights lodging, t-shirt, snacks, etc. for $112/person for youth and leaders. The Assembly will begin at 7:00 PM Friday, April 28th, 2017 and conclude by 11:00 AM on Sunday, April 30th. Geneva Center is located at 5282 N Old US 31 Rochester, IN 46975, less than 2 hours north of Indianapolis. The deadline to register is April 17th. Please contact Pastor Doug if you plan to attend. More information and registration is available online at indianadisciples.org.

Save the date: July 15th—23rd. The youth are gearing up for another week of learning and working with our partners in New Orleans who continue to provide support for those in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. As we did last time, we will be

partnering again with The Epworth Project, a Methodist ministry for disaster relief based in Slidell, LA, where we will stay for the week. If your youth would like to go, please email Pastor Doug ([email protected]) for more information. Keep your eyes peeled for an informational meeting to be set in the coming weeks.

SAVE THE DATE FOR OUR YOUTH MISSION TRIP

HELP WANTED: CHILDCARE AT ACC

Do you like kids? Would you like the chance to make some extra cash? Well, if so, you’re in luck! We are working on adding to the list of eligible childcare providers here at Allisonville, most especially for special events that don’t necessarily fall on our regular Sunday time. A background check and orientation about ACC safety policies/procedures and boundaries is required for all childcare providers. Please contact Pastor Doug if you’re interested. All are welcome to inquire, including youth!

I am so very pleased to announce that thanks to the organization of our youth and to your generous spirit, we have been able to cut a sizable check to Second Helpings, a non-profit here in Indianapolis that repurposes excess food into meals for those who would otherwise go without something to eat. The total amount we sent is an accumulation of several Souper Bowl of Caring events from the past three years, including the most recent collection we did in February of this year. I am proud of our youth and I am humbled by your generosity. THANK YOU and congratulations! Cheers, Doug

Sabbatical Team Update

The Allisonville Christian Church employment contract with the senior minister allows for a sabbatical leave after five (5) years of service to the congregation. Diane notified the council chair of her desire to apply for a Lilly Endowment grant for a sabbatical leave for 2018. This will provide the opportunity for Diane’s renewal during this time and it will benefit the congregation as she will be rested and renewed upon her return. A team was established to assist Diane with the planning and the application process. The application for the grant is due in April of 2017 for the sabbatical in 2018.

If this grant is won, the congregation will secure an interim minister for the three month sabbatical

period. With the help of Doug, Joyce, the Elders and others in the congregation, this time will be

a growing experience for all of the congregation. If you have any questions concerning this

process, please feel free to contact Steve Belding, chair of the sabbatical team. 6

Property Work Day: Saturday, April 8th

Attention: Millennials, Generation X, Centennials and young Baby Boomers There is a lot of work involved to keep our building and grounds well maintained. We have a wonderful Property Department and a number of folks who show up for work days. However, we have noticed that those who have volunteered in the past are older “Baby Boomers”. Many of our “regulars” are unable to do this type of work anymore. Some work days are outside (this Saturday, April 8 will be an outside work day) and some are inside. We would love to recruit some of you younger people to sign up to help on work days. You would be under no obligation, and you don’t have to attend meetings! Just share your name and email, and you will be contacted when a work day is planned. If you’re available on that day, just show up. As a bonus, donuts and coffee are available on those days! If you would be willing to help out, please indicate so on the attendance sheet on any Sunday. Just

write “Property Help” by your name (and be sure we have your email address). Thank you!

We would love it if a few younger folks could come and help out on Saturday, April 8th at 9 am, if you

aren’t involved with the Easter Egg Hunt!

2017 Regional Summer Youth Camps: dates & registration now available

The 2017 regional camps are scheduled and registration is now open! Visit www.indianadisciples.org and click “Church Camp” for dates, prices, and all other camp-related info. Doug will be counseling at the CYF camp in Bedford the week of June 19

th. Please also notify

Doug once you have registered online so we have a record of what is still owned from ACC for registration costs.

A Garden Party

Allisonville Night at Mud Creek— Friday, April 20, 8 pm Picasso at the Lapin Agile—Written by Steve Martin This long running Off-Broadway absurdist comedy places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian cafe in 1904. In his first comedy for the stage, Steve Martin plays fast and loose with fact, fame and fortune as these two geniuses muse on the century's achievements and prospects,as well as other fanciful topics with infectious dizziness. Allisonville Night at Mud Creek will be Friday, April 20 at 8 pm. This is a Buy One/Get One offer of $7.50 per ticket. Contact Kathie Meyer at 317-402-7437, [email protected] for reservations. They are ready to come alongside you - or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives - and provide comfort and support for as long after as needed. KALALA FAMILY UPDATE

The Kalala Family is thriving, although life, of course, still has many challenges. Both Kapi and Prince are working. Even though it has meant a deep cut in food stamp eligibility, they have opted to keep working. Janette Smith put Kapi and Prince in touch with INRC (Indianapolis Neighborhood Resource Center) and on Saturday, they took a class towards eventual home ownership. Their goal is to own their own home within the next two years if not before. The next challenge for the family is to get their green cards. They will apply in June and hopefully get them by September. All the kids are doing well. Danny has been accepted into IPS 70, a magnet school. Danny turned 6 on March 25 and Danny, Eden, and Prince celebrated with the Meyers at Longhorn Steakhouse. Eden will be in Pre-K at Allisonville next year and will be 5 in July; Mary turned 3 in January; and little Vicky is 14 months old – no longer a baby. Vicky will start preschool on a limited basis in August – hard to believe. Family needs: Kapi needs volunteers from the congregation who are willing to teach her to drive. Having two drivers in the family will go a long way towards fostering independence for this family. She needs fifty hours of practice driving before she can take her driving test. Most of it will have to be on Saturday or Sunday since the family work schedule is pretty grueling Monday – Friday. Prince is too new a driver himself to effectively teach her. It would be great if Danny, Eden, and Mary could attend Summer Camp at Allisonville in June. Kapi and Prince are happy to pay for part of it, but will be unable to pay for all three kids. Any donations to the preschool for summer camp would be appreciated. If you’ve never had an opportunity to talk to this family, please do so. After a huge learning curve and a first year of a new baby, a move, and many other challenges, we can be very proud of how far they’ve come and the plans they have made for a future in their new country. Prince is reveling In his new driving skill. The addition of a car has made a huge difference in the road to independence for this family. He is well-respected at work. Kapi enjoys contributing to the family. Her goals are to get a GED and some day to become a nurse. She is working on GED pretests to determine what she will need to be successful. Her next major goal is to get a drivers’ license. Two drivers in the family will definitely contribute to furthering the family’s independence. Danny, Age 5, had to switch schools. He is now at School 55 where the Kindergarten class only has 11 students. This smaller- sized class is contributing to his progress. We have helped the family complete applications for IPS magnet schools. Eden, Age 4, is thriving in preschool. He is extremely artistic and is progressing well in the Shining Stars class. Mary recently had her third birthday and is learning at an amazing rate. Victoria just turned one and is walking. Sue Feltner and I have spent time remembering the craziness of the night a year ago when Kapi was taken by ambulance to the hospital and delivered her daughter in less than two hours. Kapi and Prince officially joined Allisonville Christian Church in November. They are determined to

succeed in this new country in spite of a climate which surrounds refugees from all countries with

suspicion and fear. They dream of someday buying a house and being completely independent. If

you are still interested in helping them – they could especially use gas cards, pull-up pants, and

Good Nites If you have any questions about this hardworking family, please direct them to me,

continues to support this family and also to those who help the Ilondo families.

INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK UPDATE

So many exciting things are happening for Family Promise or IHN as we know it. Through many donations from businesses and churches the IHN Day Center has undergone a lot of sprucing up. There was a large donation and the flooring throughout the Center was replaced and just recently painting all of the interior took place. Last weekend a new kitchen counter and sink was put into the kitchen. As you all know to house families while they are looking for jobs and trying to get back on their feet is a necessity but when they move from the Center into housing they still need help and guidance. Family Promise offers an Aftercare program. It is also difficult for a family when they get a job or find a home to get money for daycare or a deposit for a home. A wonderful person donated $65000 to start a fund to help with these issues. They are able to pay for 30 days of daycare until they are able to get help from the State. Also they are able to give them help with a deposit for an apartment or a home. The Aftercare program continues to work with families to give them guidance financially and in other ways to they will continue to work and have a home. On Sunday, May 21, 2017 Family Promise will be participating in "Walking for Dreams". It would be wonderful if we could have a team from ACC to participate and I will be giving this information to the Outreach Committee for their next meeting. As most of you know on February 16th WTHR came to Allisonville to record a special broadcasting for IHN. It aired on March 21st. If you go to WTHR.com you can find the link to the video. It was a wonderful video and definitely showed how welcoming ACC is to the IHN families. We are hoping that this presentation will get other churches involved in this wonderful program. From April through December each year there are 2 rotations going each week (2 Vans). Beginning January through March there is only 1 rotation because there are not enough churches participating. Family Promise needs at least 5 more churches so that can keep 2 rotations going all year. Prayers that more churches will commit to this wonderful program. At the Annual Family Promise Board Meeting ACC was presented with a Certificate for supporting IHN for 21 years. I want to thank all of the past coordinators for their support and for all of our volunteers for their continuing support. Our next rotation will begin Sunday, July 16th. If you have questions about volunteering please feel free to contact me by phone at 317-403-2010 or by e-mail at [email protected]. The Director Mike has asked that if possible the congregations provide a hot breakfast for the families on Saturday mornings. I did this last time. I just fixed scrambled eggs, sausage links and rolls. It was well received. I will be adding Saturday am breakfast to our meals on the IHN signup sheet. If anyone would like to offer assistance to the Day Center are offer help in anyway you can contact me and I can put you in contact with the appropriate person. Looking forward to our next rotation! Thank you and Blessings, Sherilee McLain
