HEAD COACH COMPARISON

Coaching Years in NFL: 12th YearColts Head Coach: 2nd YearOverall Regular Season: 11-5 (.688)Overall Postseason: 0-1 (.000)Chuck Pagano's 2012 season proved to be one ofthe most inspirational stories in NFL history. Namedhead coach of the Indianapolis Colts on January25, 2012, Pagano was forced to take a leave of ab-

sence just three games into the season after being diagnosed withacute promyelocytic leukemia, a curable form of the disease, whichis a cancer of the blood and bone marrow cells.Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians assumed interim head coachingduties and he and the Colts defied the odds and rallied to a 9-3 record.During that time frame, Indianapolis secured a playoff berth and ac-complished one of their primary goals – extending the season forPagano. Some of the victories during Arians' term included a come-back win against Green Bay (Week 5) after trailing by 18 points, anovertime victory on the road at Tennessee (Week 8) and a last secondvictory in Detroit (Week 13). In all, the Colts posted a 9-1 record inone-possession games in 2012, including winning their last eight. As much as Chuck Pagano inspired the 2012 Colts, the team did justthe same for their ailing head coach. From his hospital bed, Paganowas in constant communication with the coaching staff and players. He analyzed practices while continuing to game-plan schemes. Alongthe way, Pagano continued to make his presence felt. After the team'sWeek 9 victory against Miami, the head coach gave a moving post-game speech to the contingent in the locker room."I've got circumstances," Pagano told the locker room. "You guysunderstand it, I understand it. It's already beat (referring to theleukemia). It's already beat. My vision that I'm living is to see twomore daughters get married, dance at their weddings and then hoistthat Lombardi Trophy several times."Pagano made another return three weeks later during the team'swin against Buffalo where he appeared in Owner & CEO Jim Irsay'ssuite while saluting the crowd on hand. Pagano received a rousingovation from Colts fans in attendance. As the regular season came to an end, the culmination of Arians'stretch as interim head coach concluded with the team's playoff-clinching victory at Kansas City (Week 16). The stage was set forPagano to return after missing 12 weeks of action.Division rival Houston visited Lucas Oil Stadium in the regular sea-son finale in hopes of clinching the AFC's No. 1 seed in the playoffs. The Colts were not deterred, however, as the team corralled theemotion in Pagano's return and compiled a 28-16 win to finish theregular season with an 11-5 record. The real victory, however, wasthe return of a healthy Chuck Pagano. It was a day the Colts organ-ization and fans will remember for generations.Indianapolis' playoff run ended earlier than the team had wishedafter falling to the eventual Super Bowl XLVII champion BaltimoreRavens in an AFC Wild Card playoff contest. What was not lostwere the numerous team and individual milestones that the Coltsestablished in a season facing low expectations. Most notably, the11-5 record was a nine-win improvement from the 2011 campaign, which tied for the third-largest one-year turnaround in NFL history. The Colts also registered their 12th 10-plus win season in the past14 years, which is the most of any NFL team since 1999. Paganoand Arians were honored together by the Maxwell Football Club asthe recipients of the 24th Annual Earle "Greasy" Neale Award forProfessional Coach of the Year. The two also garnered AFC Coachof the Year honors as winners of the annual NFL 101 Awards.Pagano was selected by the PFWA as the winner of the 2013George Halas Award, given to an NFL player, coach or staff mem-ber who overcame the most adversity to succeed. Each year, theFritz Pollard Alliance Foundation recognizes individuals who makea difference in diversity and inclusion at an annual awards banquet. In February of 2013, Pagano received the foundation's Game BallAward for the differences he has made to level the playing field inthe NFL for minorities.

Coaching Years in NFL: 10th YearBengals Head Coach: 11th YearOverall Regular Season: 79-80-1 (.497)Overall Postseason: 0-4 (.000)Marvin Lewis in 2013 extends his Bengals recordfor head coaching tenure to 11 seasons. He has ledthe team to the postseason in three of the last fourseasons, making the Bengals one of only seven

teams to make three-or-more playoff trips in that span.Lewis opens 2013 with 79 career victories, 15 more than any otherBengals head coach. (Sam Wyche ranks second at 64).The Bengals went 10-6 in the regular season in 2012, tying eventualSuper Bowl champion Baltimore for the best record in the AFCNorth. Cincinnati was a Wild Card playoff entry for the secondstraight year, rocketing into the playoffs with a 7-1 record in the sea-son’s second half. The resilient outfit stands as one of only nine of131 teams since 1990 to rise to the playoffs after a 3-5 start.Lewis was the consensus choice as NFL Coach of the Year in 2009,when the Bengals won the AFC North title while sweeping all six di-vision games. Lewis also led Cincinnati to an AFC North title in2005.Lewis’ record is 79-84-1, including postseason. Lewis’ record in pre-season games is 22-21-0.Lewis has risen to second in the NFL for longest current headcoaching tenure with one team, trailing only New England’s Bill Be-lichick, who is in his 14th Patriots season in 2013. In the categoryof most seasons as head coach with any team, Lewis in 2013 ranksseventh among active coaches.Lewis was named the ninth head coach in Bengals history on Jan.14, 2003. In 2002, he directed the NFL’s fifth-ranked defense withWashington, serving as assistant head coach in addition to his roleas defensive coordinator. Prior to his year with the Redskins, hewas a record-setting defensive coordinator for the BaltimoreRavens. His six seasons (1996-2001) with the Ravens included aSuper Bowl victory following the 2000 season. In the 2000 regularseason, Lewis’ Baltimore defense set the NFL record for fewestpoints allowed in a 16-game campaign (165), and the 2000 Ravensare always included in discussions of the best single-season NFLdefenses of all time.Lewis entered the NFL as linebackers coach with Pittsburgh from1993-95, guiding the careers of Pro Bowl selections Kevin Greene,Chad Brown, Levon Kirkland and Greg Lloyd.Born Sept. 23, 1958, in McDonald, Pa., near Pittsburgh, Lewisplayed linebacker at Idaho State and earned All-Big Sky Confer-ence honors in each of his three seasons (‘78-80).
